Plus, he might be the best pinch hitter in the league......
Best pinch hitting pitcher, I'll give you that. I do like the flexability he can give you if he proves he can be a legit #5 starter.
Some other thoughts as we get closer to OD:
-If Dusty can keep himself under control (ie not use them as starters) we could have a much better bench than we've had in ages.
-C is better, bench is better, #5 starter is better.
-CF, SS and LF are still a disaster and combined with Dusty could provide a toxic dose of low OBP at the top of the order.
-Still not sold on any real defensive improvement because Tvirus is not a defensive upgrade over Dusty's son in law. EE still has issues and I'll believe AG plays a full season of effective SS when I see it. Everyone behind him is a defensive nightmare.
-No one in the NL central other than the Cubs is clearly superior to the Reds on paper at this point. The Cubs have plenty of question marks of their own. So we have a weak division going for us, which is good.
I still don't think they can play .500 ball mainly because I think AG won't make it out of April before he's back on the DL and we have someone at SS who isn't a real MLB caliber defensive SS. Plus if everyone of the 4 good players we have isn't having a good year this offense will struggle BIG TIME.
Also Dusty is so hell bent on "manufacturing" runs he's going to have guys running into outs and sacrificing way too often. They may want to play small ball but they still run the bases like Freel (read that to mean complete dumbasses). Not to reopen the great small ball vs 3 run homer offensive debates but there is no arguing that you must have a success rate greater than 70% for running to be a positive run creating experience instead of a negative one.
Some key stats I'll look at early:
GP for Alex Gonzales
CS rate for the whole team
OBP for WT
Give me 120+, <30% and .340+ respectivly and I think you'll see the first year of .500+ that we've seen in ages.
