Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Jax I know you arent optimistic about his chances but....

Danny Herrera pitched perfectly again today and is untouched this spring. Young, lefty, excellent poise and precision. Can we please, find a place in the bullpen for him!

Whatcha think? They have to be noticing the way he is pitching.............dont they? :ohwell:

I'm sure there is a FA vet lefty out there that can do half as well that would fit really nicely into Dusty's plan for the Reds :p

I love watching Herrera pitch,he struck out Morneau lastnight with a 53 MPH change up. Viola is who I would like to see in the bullpen... 95 MPH fastball with a nasty slider. I was very impressed watching him lastnight.

Its not little Danny Ray I'm down on but the Reds as a whole. I like the little guy. All I would be careful with is they use him intelligently (unpossible I know) ie I don't think he'll fare so well if hitters see him more than once a series type of thing. That 60 mph stuff will eff with MLB hitters at first, once they know they don't have to gear up for anything else he's going to have trouble. Its essentially an eefus pitch.

I have always said you could take almost any average fan that can throw it over the plate and get 3 outs if they think he's a real MLB pitcher. Same priciple with Dany Ray. MLB hitters brains don't process what their eyes are telling them when it's coming across that slow.

Yes. The Reds braintrust seems to operate under the guideline of acquiring vets to give them replacement level production at twice the price. They are the anti-Beanes. I'll let the records of the two franchises over the past 10-15 years speak for themselves.

It doesn't matter if he's any good or ready. If he has options he won't be coming north.

Sadly probably true.

I can understand not wanting to risk losing a couple of future stars like Bray or Masset by exposing them to waivers. Besides, all Herrera does is get people out. He might not bring the right veteran presence to the clubhouse, know how to win or be scrappy. Getting people out is overrated.

Great article from RedsReporter about lineup optimization.

So that gives us a lineup that looks like this:
EdE
Votto
Phillips
Bruce
Hernandez
Dickerson
Gonzalez
Pitcher
Taveras

Compare to Dusty's projected lineup:
Taveras
Gonzalez
Votto
BP
Bruce
EdE
Dickerson
Hernandez
Pitcher

I don't know that I neccessarily agree with everything in that article but I found it interesting at the very least.

I do know that Dusty's lineup gives us 2 guys leading off with projected OBP's of .320 and .308 respectively. :shake:

That means we are looking at starting the game with 1 out and no one on and a guy with a worse OBP than WT coming up almost 70% of the time. The best part for Votto is the club will use his supressed RBI numbers against him in arbitration when they willingly put 2 out machines ahead of him in the lineup (because CF and SS must hit 1-2). You gotta love MLB.

BTW, have I ever mentioned how much I hate the Taveras signing or Dusty being our manager? Ever? I try to keep it to myself as much as possible but sometimes it slips out ever so slightly and I just can't remember if I've ever let it be known here.

What about Hariston? We went through all that trouble in the off season to re-sign him and he's the only returning starter with a .300+ average and we're not going to use him? I know this club is all about letting the young guys play, but you can't ignore that kind of production. We know he can play just about any position, and he has a .981 career fielding %, why not let him play SS or take Dickerson's spot in left and Gonzalez's spot in the lineup?

He's the new Freel sans the imaginary friend. He's slated to split an equal amount of time backing up all 3 OF positions, SS and riding the DL.

Dude, LF does not bat 2nd...c'mon. Thats crazy talk.

The funny part is, how much worse could we really be? Seriously.

we wouldn't be and that's the point.

When I was in High School, I could never understand the type of coach that only wants to coach within his system instead of playing towards the talents of the players. It's much easier to do that in college anyway.

Dusty does the exact same thing. Batting Votto second? WTF?

Dusty has a set lineup in his head and it's not by player skill it's by position. He figures that if player A is playing CF, he should bad leadoff. Could you imagine the Braves batting strikeout king Andruw Jones leadoff?!?!
