Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Early, yes. But Votto looked good today.

I think we can expect Votto to hit 30 HR this year.
I think we can expect BP to hit 25 HR this year.
I think we can put Bruce down for another 25-30.

I think the heart of the lineup is these 3 guys, plus a nice surprise from Gomes and/or Edwin finally puts it together. Tavares will be a terror when he gets on, which is his #1 problem.

Our pitching staff will be pretty impressive this year, if Harang can bounce back, which should be inevitable, and Arroyo holds his own.

Cueto and Volquez almost have to be the most impressive duo of young SP in MLB that have already proved themselves, and have yet to even scratch the ceiling. I am really excited about the rotation, and if Homerun Bailey decides to pull it together and grab the fifth spot, then I can see mucho potentialo.

Adding Rhodes to the bullpen is nice, and I'd rather have him than Affeldt anyway. Would have prefered both, but oh well. Burton, Weathers, Cordero.. I know I am missing names here, but since the Reds are still undefeated as of today, I have my hopes.

Rip away, Jax... :wink2:

(Indians fan here)

Trying to determine the type of year you are going to have is all guessing, and fun. Baseball has become the ultimate year to year sport.

Our World Series last year was Tampa Bay against Phiadelphia.

That is the great thing about what baseball has become. It is such a game of momentum. I'd argue moreso than any other sport. All it takes is a relief pitcher to get hot for it to rub off on the rest of the pitching staff. It's just a unique sport where pay-rolls may guarantee a spot close to the playoff race, but don't reserve a spot.

So enjoy the season and keep your fingers crossed a few players can spark the club. I know as an Indians fan, I could really care less about our rivalry anymore, I just root on small market teams and hope they take out the Evil Empires (Red Sox and Yankees).

PECOTA forecast for these guys isn't that far off of what you are saying.(BA/OBP/SLG)

Votto: .289/.370/.514 with 27 HR and 90 RBI
BP: .282/.337/.458 20 hr 71 RBI(they think he'll hit 2nd, they don't know Dusty)
Bruce: .283/.342/.509 28hr 91 RBI
EE: .283/.365/.483 23 hr 79 rbi

A quicker way to look at it is by OPS (obp+slg)
Votto: 884
BP: 795
Bruce: 851
EE: 848

Four guys who OPS over .800 in the middle of the lineup is pretty good but not great. I don't know that its enough to overcome the offensive blackholes in LF, CF and SS.

Turning Freel into Ramon Hernandez this off season was the one move I was very happy with. He isn't an all star or anything but he's a definite upgrade at the C position.

I've beaten Tavaras to death so all I will say is this. He is an absolute travesty at anything less than a .335 OBP and a successful steal rate under 70%. If he can substantially beat those 2 benchmarks over the long season then he might not be as bad as I fear.

I will say that talking about Tavars's steals reminds me of people using Miltons win totals to try and convince me he wasn't a FA disaster waiting to happen a few years ago. We'll see if I've gotten dumber over the years.

The pitching staff is light years better than anything we have had in Redsland since 1990. That said its still not that great by MLB standards. If there is continued improvement they might rise up to middle of the NL in runs allowed.

If Baily and Owings show they are ready to take rotation spots then imo you deal Arroyo if you can. Organizational depth and talent up the middle sucks, maybe he can fetch a few legit prospects (SS, CF, C).

Average scoring team, average run preventing team as it sits right now. With so much youth there could be a massive break out and or a 1999 fantasy type year but honestly .500 is a great year for this team. I'd be happy to see it.

Opening Day Tickets

I got an email from the Reds on Friday, which somehow I missed until today. You can purchase Opening Day tix if you buy a ticket to one of the White Sox games. Only singles left at this point, but I got my Opening Day tix in the same row one section apart and the Sox tickets all in the same row. Just reserve one set and then immediately go back to the link and open it in another window and reserve another set. If you don't get them together, try it again before releasing the first set. Here's the link:

All I know is that if Danny Herrera doesnt get a legitimate shot at the bullpen at some time this year I'm going to be extremely pissed! The guy has great stuff, is a lefty and very young. Perfect for a major league team. This is where the joke comes in about the Reds not qualifying as a Major League team. :frown2:

Why on earth would you want to use a young home grown player like Herrera for league minimum when you can go out and pay FA money to a 38 year old Arthur Rhodes?

How long has this stupid Girardi thing been going? Is the actual game on this channel or is it just Yankees stuff?

Ahh, 2nd game now I see. Good to see Dickerson in the game leading off. He gets a clean hit, then steals second but the dipshit ump called him out on the play. Clearly in safely. Good to see us at least getting a shot at that.
