Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

If he does not then he's a bust no doubt about it, time is quickly running out.

Agreed, but what we have seen the end of last season and spring training lead towards him continuing to improve...

I do to considering all this talent thats maturing now is from the Dan O drafts, WK's claim to drafting fame thus far is the aforementioned Mr Stubbs.

Lasts years draft still young, but looks good right now...Mesarosco, Frazier, Waring, etc...

WK might not be the one that drafted these guys, but he is doing better at managing the minors than any of the other gms...

I'm still not over the last time WK tried to "trade" for bullpen help. Lets hope he goes away and WJ can put the finishing touches on a decent core of young talent.

I agree, so far the trade really looks bad, but he tried, and with no injuries I think it would of been a good trade...

I know many here already know this but here's the roster for OD (I think):

Starting lineup:
Corey Patterson CF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Joey Votto 1B
Paul Bako/Javy Valentin C

Bench
Ryan Freel INF/OF
Juan Castro INF
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Norris Hopper OF

Rotation
Aaron Harang
Bronson Arroyo
Johnny Cueto
Josh Fogg
Edinson Volquez

Bullpen
Francisco Cordero
David Weathers
Todd Coffey
Kent Mercker
Jared Burton
Jeremy Affeldt
Mike Lincoln

DL: SS Alex Gonzalez, C David Ross and P Matt Belisle.

There is an ass load of garbage on that list. Hopefully we soon see:

AG come back and Castro go away
Ross replace Bako on the roster
Belisle replace Lincoln
Bray (I can't believe I'm typing this) replace Mercker

I still say .500 at best.

The one that I have a huge problem with is Patterson in the leadoff spot and his OBP of .298...Why not go with Kepp in the leadoff spot and Votto in the 2 hole...

When you look at it as the guys being on DL in for the guys that are just here for a couple weeks until they come back it don't look all that bad...

A bench of Hatte, Freel, Hopper, Gonzo/Kepp, Valentine is a pretty good bench that we haven't had over the past couple years...We have speed, good hitters, and guys that can fill in all over the diamond if need be...

I am interested to see Lincoln...Marty was pretty impressed in the spring...

anyone with a good fantasy sleeper at SP? Any promising rookies? I picked up Volquez, but 3 of my SP's are starting the year on the DL.

Smoltz
Randy Johnson
Liriano starting in the minors

I need some help.

Volquez will get you lots of k's, but right now he is projecting as the 5th starter...I think Cueto might be the better in terms of a sleeper, as he is the number 3 starter and will put up a good number of k's as well, tho he did struggle in his last couple spring starts with with BB, but you also have to figure in the sorry Reds pen that could hurt those guys in terms of wins...

I decided Volquez over Cueto b/c of spring training basically. Cueto looked really inconsistent in his last start.

Volquez looked under control throughout. Spring Training isn't the best gauge, but from what I saw, I think Volquez will be the better pitcher. 5th starter or not.

Have you heard of any young arms on other clubs that have had great springs so far?

I can't wait until the first month is over...I'm sitting on some good/great talent that needs several more weeks before they're ready.

Yeah I was just saying that Cueto might get more starts, but Volquez could be going up against pitchers that are not quite as good as him...

I really don't know much about other baseball teams in terms of young talent other than the Reds...

Tampa looks strong....the Red Sox and Yankees won't be going anywhere anytime soon if their minor leagues pan out....

The Dodgers need a couple more strong drafts as do teams like Minnesota and the CHW...

Not a lot of base clogging going on there huh?

I'll second that, it would be a bench full of honest to goodness major league basebal players, something we definitly haven't had in many years.

Even if you are a fan, it is funny...

Getting close to opening day...Not to excited to have to see Brandon Webb tomorrow...

Damn, I just realized I have Webb on my fantasy team. Guess I'll have to root against him tomorrow... or hope for some late inning drama. :wink2: Ah, it's early, hope he gets shelled.

Eh, I'm ok with it for now. Hatteberg rakes at GABP. I hope that their intent is to move him in the coming weeks. I wish Votto was at least getting regular ABs in the midst of this situation.

I agree, but I just hope that it is not a long term situation that plays out...

Talk is that maybe Freel and Hatte are on the block and hopefully they can get something for them..
