Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Encarnacion confident in his abilities
Despite struggling this spring, third baseman knows it'll come
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- When third baseman Edwin Encarnacion got off to an awful start last season, the Reds demoted him.
Now that Encarnacion has spring numbers that are riper than a compost heap under a hot sun, is there concern another rough start is looming? "Not really," manager Dusty Baker said. "You have to look at the back of his bubblegum card and you know guys that hit are going to hit. Right now, he's off. He's going to stay back [Wednesday] and do a lot of hitting."

Found this nugget about Stanton in the article talking about Homer's demotion to AAA...

One conundrum is what the Reds might do with reliever Mike Stanton, who is owed $3.5 million for next season, including a 2009 option buyout. Stanton, who already passed through waivers without being claimed, hasn't pitched poorly in camp, but he struggled mightily last season.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported on Wednesday that the Phillies are seeking a left-handed reliever like Stanton and were dangling corner infielder Wes Helms as a potential return. In terms of salary, it wouldn't be a big difference. Helms is owed $2.9 million, including his 2009 option buyout. On Tuesday night, Baker, general manager Wayne Krivsky and special assistant Walt Jocketty were among those huddled into roster discussions. Still, the meeting yielded only the Bailey cut and no other developments.

Castellini chats with Reds fans
Chief operating officer discusses park upgrades, 2008 season
Cincinnati Reds

Castellini: Hi everyone, thanks for joining us today. With five days before Opening Day, we're all very excited to start the 2008 season.

bsbabyboy: What is your favorite new addition to Great American Ball Park? What do you think will attract the fans' attention the most?
Castellini: Without question, the third-base concourse with the Gameday Proshop, the HH Gregg Highlight Zone, the Watson's patio area and the Toyota Tundra in center field......

Helms would be a solid bat off the bench, but I wouldn't want him at anything more and either way you are going to be paying a bench player 2.9 mill which seems crazy to me...

Just cut ties with Stanton and go from there...

OK so we spend the same 3M one way or another. Helms at least has some value (solid RH bat off bench) whereas Stanton has negative production value.

Seems a no brainer to me if someone offered it but then if we had a solid RH bat off the bench who could play a couple of middle infield positions what would we do with Juan Castro? No way we are a legit title contender without him.

WK's moves always gettin in the way of being good 'n shit.

I know, but I have a clean slate with Dusty, and I actually like some of the things he has done this spring, but he has his theories just like everyone else, and hopefully he can bring the Reds back to being a good ball club, as the young talent mixed with some solid vetrans are here...

Enquirer

Breaking News...Stanton to be cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best news I have heard all day...

In other news Bill Bray sent down, Andy Phillips the same and the rule 5 guy was sent back to Boston...I was really hoping for Bray to make the team, but I have no problem with him in Louisville getting some innings on his arm and hopefully fully recovering and not having any lingering effects of his injuries he has had over the past couple seasons...He has the stuff...

The 5 man rotation is set...

The 7 man bullpen should look like...

Cordero
Burton
Coffey
Weathers
Affeldt
The last two could consist of Lincoln/Mercker/Belisle or maybe someone in a trade for Freel or Hatte...

Either way if we can get Gonzo on the opening day roster instead of Castro we will be looking up...

We finally have a closer, an slightly improved pen, 2 young starters that can have shown glimmers of hope in ST, Stanton gone, hopefully Castro, and we look to have a solid offense with Dunn, Griffey, Kepp, Phillips, EE, and Votto...And we have two very very good prospects in Bailey and Bruce just waiting their time in AAA, and also some bullpen help in AAA with Roenicke, McBeth, Bray, Pelland, and Viola, so things are looking up in the Nati...
