Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Homer really seems to tire out after a couple innings, and then loses control. He threw well thru 2 innings last night and then lost it...Still didn't give up a lot of runs, but it was the Jays 3rd string lineup, even tho he did get Vernon wells to strikeout...

This IMO and I hate to say it, but unless he can get his stamina up might put him as a closer eventually...

Tough decisions looming for Reds
Competition for bullpen, bench spots remains as season nears
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

SARASOTA, Fla. -- For Reds players on the roster bubble and front-office management alike, this is one of the toughest weeks.
Players who have made it to the last week of Spring Training didn't make it that long by accident. And there's a good chance some deserving players will have to be cut.
"The cuts are getting tougher," manager Dusty Baker said. No one was sent out on Monday, but with 37 healthy players in camp, it means 12 of them have to go before the 25-man Opening Day roster is set.

Great American Ball Park gets makeover
New promotions, dining options to be offered in 2008
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

SARASOTA, Fla. -- In the movie "Bull Durham," the Bulls' stadium featured a sign for hitters that said "Hit bull, Win a steak."
At Great American Ball Park this season, there will be a similar target for Reds hitters. But if they actually hit it during a game, it would become a lucrative moment for a lucky fan. Last week, the club placed a red 2008 Toyota Tundra pickup truck on top of the elevator shaft well beyond the fence in center field. If a Reds player hits the truck during a home run, one randomly selected lucky fan will take home the $31,000 vehicle.

Bullpen remains a riddle
BY JOHN ERARDI | [email protected]

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Confusion reigns. Reds manager Dusty Baker doesn't name names, but in his words you can see what's going round and round in his mind when its comes to the makeup of Monday's bullpen.
"We have to make some decisions on some things - in a lot of areas," Baker said. "It's not my money, but you hope that (money) is not a determining factor. In baseball, in any business, a team wants to stay under budget. We have a meeting (Tuesday) night when we get back. The truck leaves (today) for Cincinnati.

Reds notebook
Volquez again presents his case
BY JOHN ERARDI | [email protected]

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Edinson Volquez did it again - another sterling outing (five hits in five innings with five strikeouts, one walk and one earned run) in his second time around against the stacked Phillies offense.
The Reds won 5-3 Tuesday at Bright House Field, as Volquez lowered his spring ERA to 2.70.
The biggest non-secret in camp is that Volquez, a right-hander, and fellow Dominican Johnny Cueto are going to compose two-fifths of the Reds' starting rotation, even though Reds manager Dusty Baker hasn't yet anointed either officially.

Doing whats best for the company makes the boss look bad.

Tough spot to be in for Dusty but the boss shouldn't make it so easy to make him look bad plus the bosses replacement is already on board.

Easy call, do not bring Stanton north.

Right move. I have no problem with that. He needs to work on his stamina and control. I'd like to see them put Belisle in the pen and use Fogg as cheap fill. But, that would be expecting a lot of them. :wink2:

Agreed with all said here...

I know some of you guys don't like Dusty, but I like the things he has said so far...Now lets see how we do on the field...

I like some of what he's said but the base clogging stuff is hard to handle.

As long as he doesn't ruin the kids in any way shape or form, I'm fine with him.

Thats the million dollar question though, will he prove his vet loving young pitcher abusing rep is myth or fact?

If he lives up to his rep and destroys the young nucleus of this franchise I still won't hate baker, I will wish an obscene and horrific fate on WK and BC for hiring him.
