Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

We are obviously better without him than with him but that pen is still a goatfuck outside of Cordero. The only difference between Mercker and Stanton is their names.

Other than the fact its still March and they haven't started losing yet I don't see any reason to be optamistic about 2008 (other than its at least not 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 or 2007).

The bullpen I think will be better midseason than it is now, either because the guys in the majors will be getting the job done, or some of the young arms in the minors will be ready to go, and there are lots of them...Bray, Roenicke, Pelland, Viola, McBeth, Cooter, etc...

I truly believe that Bray is the answer as far as the lefty out of the pen, but just needs to stay healthy...

As far as being any different than other years I think it is due to the pitching staff looking better overall as a whole...Top to bottom we are better everywhere...

Harang a year older...
Arroyo a year older...
Cueto better than what we had last year with lots of potential...
Fogg better than what we had last year...IF he struggles we could look to Bailey...
Volquez better than what we had last year and lots of potential...

Cordero makes the whole pen better for the simple fact that he can close the door, makes our best bullpen arm from last year our second guy...

Coffey hopefully is better he has had a great spring, and really does have decent stuff, but for whatever reason has never really put it together...

Affeldt has proven to be a solid major league pitcher...Mercker I don't envision being here but more than 2 months...

I also think the excitement of young guys is springing the optimism...Lots of places have us winning more than half our games...So it is not just Reds fans...

agreed with everything said about the youngsters, and i honestly thought bill would be the lefty answer we were looking, atleast when compared to mercker and stanton..but he was just reassigned and dusty said it was because of inexperience and succeptibility to injury..

Translation: he had options and the other guy didn't.

I disagree with this...Mercker isn't even on the 40 man roster and Stanton was under a decent size contract, so if they really thought that Bray should of been here they would of had him here...The thing is he has only throw like 60 innings or something low like that over 2 years...He was hurt to start ST, and has never shown in his career that he has durablity, and is still young at 24...He will be up early if he shows in AAA that he is ready and can stay healthy...

I have been really surprised as the reds are even starting to get some love in the national media.

SI picked them to finish second in the division behind the cubs and looks like one game out of the wildcard. And Peter Gammons has been talking them up as his surprise team in the NL. Hopefully half of these positives pan out and the Reds could put together a good season.

I listened to most of today's game driving up to C-Bus. Cueto had control issues again. He finished with a Nuke LaLooshish line: 4IP 5H 3BB 7K 3R/2ER. Not terrible, but he was behind on nearly every hitter. Marty was saying that Mike Lincoln is throwing better than before his injury and said you'll be impressed when you see him. Marty and Thom also said they thought Merker made the roster as much for his leadership as for his pitching. Marty and Thom both sounded very optimistic about this season and the only criticism they dished out was for Drew Stubbs - saying at his age he needs to mash AA or start looking like a bust. Well, that and Marty is still baffled that they used a 1st round pick on a HS catcher -said he hopes the kid is the 2nd coming of Johnny Bench, but it's not likely.

On another note, they were discussing the large number of vets that were in camp and questioning how many can realistically be sent to Louisville without clogging up the minor league system. Not usually the type of quandary the Reds find themselves in: having too many major league ready players that they risk stunting the growth of some home grown talent if they keep them around for insurance. I guess that is a good problem to have. Certainly better than the lack of talent we have grown accustomed to having.

I take it Dunn did not play?

Honestly I feel good about Stubbs having a breakout year starting in A+...

Lots of young talent we have running around in the minors, and majors for that matter...Hope for another great draft this year to continue to build the depth...

We are going to have a surplus soon if we continue and we could trade one for a piece or two that we might need, like maybe a bullpen arm or C...

Team's makeup has Baker glowing
New skipper sees potent mix in young bucks, solid veterans

The Columbus Dispatch

The Cincinnati Reds' decision to hire Dusty Baker was a bugle blast to the rest of the league: The Reds are coming! The Reds are coming!
Owner Bob Castellini made it clear he wanted to win in the short term. There would be no two- or three-year process.
After committing more than $10 million over three years to Baker, the Reds exercised a $13 million option on outfielder Adam Dunn's contract, signed free-agent closer Francisco Cordero to a four-year, $46 million contract and signed reliever Jeremy Affeldt for one year and $3 million. Each move augmented Castellini's message: The Reds intend to contend for the National League Central title.

Continued......

If he does not then he's a bust no doubt about it, time is quickly running out.

I do to considering all this talent thats maturing now is from the Dan O drafts, WK's claim to drafting fame thus far is the aforementioned Mr Stubbs.

I'm still not over the last time WK tried to "trade" for bullpen help. Lets hope he goes away and WJ can put the finishing touches on a decent core of young talent.
