Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

For all the talk about how good Bruce and Votto can be, and how insufficient Hatteberg, Patterson, Freel, Hopper, etc. are - when it comes down to it, neither Bruce nor Votto did what needed to be done to unseat these guys and earn the job out of camp.

How much of that is due to the manager(not just Dusty but the last 4-5 mouth breathing retards as well)? Votto hit well at the MLB level all through September but had a bad spring, if thats a scrappy vet he more than likely gets a pass on ST numbers. Rookies have good ST numbers for this club all the time and get sent to the back of the bus because ST numbers don't mean anything and they aren't proven players.

Whatever, it won't make a difference but its just another one of those things that makes me hate being a Reds fan. Incompetence is part of the club's corporate culture.

It isn't all about spring training IMO...You base it on other things and Votto proved in September what he could do...

He is the future and he needs to play...Same for Bruce IMO...

I like the Salmon deal if they are going to get a solid player back...

We have Roenicke and McBeth in AAA from the right side and pelland from the left side who are younger and should be ready during the season...

As for Hamilton I do that deal over everday of the week and twice on Sunday...Take pitching over an OF all the time...

I am with Jax and just don't understand the keeping of guys like Castro, Stanton, and fucks on the team that while they maybe solid players and have put up numbers at some point in their career when there are younger guys that can do the same thing, cost less and are there for the future, why not play them???

Anyway we could ship Hatte and someone else and get a capable catcher?

It's a very bad sign when our eternal optimist is dropping the f-bomb. :p

Aaron Harang

The big guy is in mid-season form already. Six innings of 4 hit shutout baseball today with 5 K's and 0 walks. Just makes you feel good when he goes to the mound.

The Reds won 5-1 today and some of the guys we're counting on finally looked like swinging the bat today like EdE 2-3, JR. 2-3, BP 1-3 2RBIs, Joey Votto 2-3. Like to see them all get warmed up and ready to go.

Guess who gave up the only Reds run today?! :smash:

I know I shouldnt but the new rotation and some youth has me cautiously optimistic. Someone spike the Geritol and we're home free!

Great Article about some young Reds and others.

Cueto, others turning heads with eye-popping springs.

On Cueto:

"94-mph 2-seam ... 96 4-seam ... 96, 95, 94, 95, 94 ... 95 fb, 88 sli (slider), 87 sli, 96, 88 sli, 86 (change)."

"You see so many guys this time of year throwing [their fastballs] in the high 80s and low 90s," said one scout, "that when a guy comes along who throws it 94-97, to both sides of the plate, down in the zone, and complements that with a hard upper-80s slider and a changeup that goes straight down -- all for strikes -- let's just say it catches your attention."

On Voltron:

"The best trade this winter was Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton."

"Unbelievable movement," said a coach of one of those teams. ... "Electric stuff," gushed one scout. ... "His changeup is really, really, really dirty," said Bako.

Beautiful to see some young Redlegs on this type of list. Crap! I'm starting to get excited again......

[sarcasm]
I'm waiting for Dusty to do the smart thing and send them down to the minors for more seasoning
[/sarcasm]

They will probably walk too much in their starts and Dusty will have to take them out and turn it over to the bullpen so they don't "clog the bases" I am excited at some of the Reds young players, but a long way from enthused about the management of the squad, maybe this year can be their blind hog finding the acorn year.

Why put Stanton out there when he gives up runs every time he toes the rubber...

Who is responsible for Stanton's contract and who has influence over him getting undeserved PT to try and justify that contract?

I'll give you a hint his initial are WK.

All this talk about Cueto, and what does he do today...2/3 inning, 3 hits, 5 BB, 5 ER. No es bueno.

I love it actually. I don't want him going into the season thinking this shits going to be that easy. I'm glad he took it the way he did also. Keep your head down and learn from your mistakes young fella. He'll be just fine. Now if he comes out and does the same thing in his next/last spring outing I might worry a little.

Word from Reds camp

Monday, March 24, 2008 2:54 AM

HOME FIELD: ED SMITH STADIUM, SARASOTA, FLA. WEB SITE: WWW.REDS.COM

Yesterday's game: The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Reds 10-9. Johnny Cueto retired only two of the 10 batters he faced in the first inning, when Tampa Bay scored five times and chased him after only 19 minutes. "With young pitchers, things are going to happen sometimes," manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm sure that probably won't happen to him the rest of his career. He felt terrible about it."
