Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

You're going to like Patterson out of the order soon enough.

I agree...

Your boy Volquez had 13K's in a minor league game today in 7 2/3 innings...

I don't know - Patterson had his best year of his career under Baker in Chicago when he was primarily batting 2nd or 7th, depending on who was pitching that day. I wouldn't expect Baker to give up on him very easily IMO.

-Anyone notice the sacrifice by Dunn that plated our second run?

man on 3rd, no one out and he's up there swinging at a ball a foot outside, rolls over on it and has a weak grounder to the right side. This was not the 9th inning of a 1 run game, this was early in a game, playing at home and no one was out. Our power hitter is up there not trying to see some pitches he could mash but looking to sacrifice himself.

If that was the fruit of Dusty's no base clogging mantra its going to be a very long season.

-Also nice to see an old school, fundamentals first manager watch Nacho Libre turn a double into a single by not hustling and the pitcher fail to get a sac bunt down with Nacho on first.

-Refreshing to see wristbands also hasn't changed that fabulous team culture of kicking the ball around at least once or twice a game. Hell these guys are so good they can spot the other team a run or two per game, it won't hurt.

-First of at least 81 more losses.

I agree with a majority of this post, but regarding Dunn: As a fantasy owner, and seeing many Reds games, any time Dunn gets a runner in from scoring position with less than 2 outs, it's a win.

He was something like 20 for 34 last year if I read the stat-line correctly.

Its not the result but the mindset behind it that bothers me. If I'm in the other dugout and Dunn is rolling easy sacrifice grounders to 2B I'll consider that a win for my team every time.

You only get 27 outs a game, no need to have the sluggers up there giving them away in the early innings for one single run without even working the count and seeing some pitches.

It could have just been a mental error by Dunn (go figure) but if we start to see this kind of thing be a pattern based on Dusty's "OBP is overrated" philosophy then I'll be tuning out much earlier than normal this year.

No matter who it is, however they get a guy in is fine by me...I mean I don't want Dunn going up there swinging at bad pitches, but I also don't want him striking out in those situations...The run in is better than no run in...You take them when you can get them...

-Also nice to see an old school, fundamentals first manager watch Nacho Libre turn a double into a single by not hustling and the pitcher fail to get a sac bunt down with Nacho on first.

He wouldn't of made it to second even if he was running...Good luck for anyone trying to bunt them pitches Webb was throwing up there...Harang has put in tons of work on his bunting and I expect it to be pretty solid most of the season...

-Refreshing to see wristbands also hasn't changed that fabulous team culture of kicking the ball around at least once or twice a game. Hell these guys are so good they can spot the other team a run or two per game, it won't hurt.

EE made a good play and it was obvious that the ball was wet and slipped out of his hands, and the wild pitch was clearly to the fault of our non-defensive catcher, so no reason to get too upset IMO...

-First of at least 81 more losses.

Why all the negativity already...I saw some good things out there, other than the offense and I don't think that is one of our problems, especially when they are throwing the cy young award winner out there...If we can get thru games only giving up 4 runs we will win 82 or more...

Yeah. Brandon Phillips noticed it. His post game comments, "It was like we were trying to prove something instead of trying to win the game. A lot of guys were swinging at balls they don't normally swing at."

Way to go Dusty!

Oh man, its hard to get me to think any worse of the Reds but that is depressing.

Diamondbacks 4, Reds 2: Mistakes, along with Webb's change-up, help sink Cincinnati

Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., left center, and second baseman Brandon Phillips, right center, and the Reds honored Joe Nuxhall before the game.

CINCINNATI -- Reds reliever Jared Burton arrived at Great American Ball Park around 9 a.m. yesterday for a game scheduled to start at 2:10 p.m. He was fidgeting by 11:30.
"I want to do something," he said to no one in particular.
Rain washed out batting practice and delayed the first pitch by an hour, turning opening day into more of a test of patience than it already figured to be. Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb made it doubly difficult. Any Reds hitter who was a tick too anxious was likely to swing at Webb's bread-and-butter sinker and hit it harmlessly into the ground.

Reds betting Patterson's best days still ahead of him

Corey Patterson

CINCINNATI -- In the Reds' season opener Monday, Corey Patterson made a diving catch in left-center field and ran down a fly ball on the warning track in right-center. That kind of range is a big reason why he won the starting job in center.
In the same game, Patterson went 0 for 4 and stranded three base runners. His track record at the plate is a big reason why he might not start for the Reds for long.

I can kinda understand putting Patterson in CF, and Hatteberg at 1B... But who in the hell decided to put Mark Mallory at 3B?

Bronson Arroyo is like a less extreme version of Kyle Lohse. He can be pretty good at times, but he gets into trouble when he sticks his head up his ass like he did in the 5th inning tonight. Hanging a breaking ball to Dan Haren is bad enough. How in the hell did he manage to take it to a three-ball count against a pitcher in the first place.

This team is giving up outs and bases left and right.

Somebody should take away Arroyo's guitar until he figures out how to stop throwing meatballs on two-strike counts.

The Reds don't have any catchers. They have matadors.

Isn't it the job of the GM to recognize crippiling areas of weakness on a team and to do something to try and fix it? Oh thats right, we signed Paul Bako. Nevermind.
