Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Dispatch

Spring spotlight

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:55 AM
Dispatch reporter Scott Priestle is in Florida, splitting time between Reds and Indians spring training camps. Today he brings you ?

Corey Patterson

REDS OUTFIELDER

? Age: 28
? Major-league experience: Seven-plus seasons
? Last season: Hit .269 with eight home runs and 37 RBI for the Orioles
? This season: Competing to be the Reds' starting center fielder
Patterson's athleticism has never been questioned. He has the type of skills that earn a player a second, third, maybe fourth chance to prove himself.

Whew. Thank goodness the Reds didn't just hire a manager with a reputation of giving struggling veterans with unlimited potential third or fourth chances!

We coulda really been fucked there!

With Alex Gonzalez being out with a 'broken knee,' what are the chances the Reds go out and get a veteran replacement at SS?

I'm thinking Neifi Perez fits the mold of this club perfectly. You know, he's one of "Dusty's guys," he used to be kinda athletic and has always had some potential, which is, of course, better then any actual real ability at all, and he's serving a suspension for substance abuse, which fits right in with the rest of the Reds named in the Mitchell Report.

Oh, and his lifetime OPS is lower than Josh Hamilton's BAC the last time he blew into a breathalyzer, which is also something this team needs more of.

Is it April yet? I can't fucking wait!

Belisle got touched up in the second today as Freel misplayed a fly ball in center. Play Bruce damnit! we need all the help we can get out there this season and Patterson isnt it.

Bruce is dinged up with a strained quad...But is day to day...

No reason for a vet at SS due to having Kepp IMO...I think that he can handle day to day SS duties and Janish is a very good defensive replacement if they want to go that direction...Also Gil is dinged a little know, but I have always liked what he brought to the table, but could never stay healthy...And last but not least, and I know nothing about defense, but love the offense of Adam Rosales...Believe outside of Bruce he had the most extra base hits in the minors last season...

Don't forget Manos de Oro! :tongue2:

That is going to be the one thing that is really going to piss me off about the opening day roster, because you can just tell by the number of at bats that he is getting during ST that he is going to be on the roster, and there is absolutely no reason for him to be on there...

The number two thing would be Hatte starting over Votto...

Number 3 would be Bruce not in center...

Number 4 would be a starting rotation of Harang/Arroyo/Belisle/Fogg/Affeldt

One of Bailey/Volquez need to be in there...

BTW really like Roenicke has done so far and hope that he makes the roster out of ST...

I'd say you better be prepared to be pissed off on at least 3 of the 4. I think Votto will start over Hatte but who knows with wristbands in charge, Votto might take a BB, clog up the bases and piss him off.

Castro on the other hand will ensure we have no clogged bases as he goes up their feebly hacking at anything in the vicinity of the plate.

He may have hands of gold but he's got the bat of a 9 year old girl.

I don't think that it is all Dusty...IF WK really wanted these things not to happen he would make the call...

Agreed. Just like I've said about the last 4 managers, I don't blame a moron for being a moron-I blame the guy who hired him knowing he's a fucking moron.

I heard Chris Welsh talking about Homer this morning and he is doing no favors for himself with the media. He said he's pretty much a loaner during BP and "not easy to talk to." Also, said he has been labeled in the past as "uncoachable." Just thought it was interesting he was bringing this up as Welsh is almost always a positive guy, at least unless there is an obvious issue. He is certainly not one to stir something up. He also threw it out there that Belisle only had 11 quality starts of 30... "that's not very good."

Lots of talk about Bailey being a head case and uncoachable...Not what you want to hear about your top pitching prospect, you want him to want to learn and become the best...Hopefully he gets rid of this persona, as I had heard about earlier in the preseason in an article, but now it is back to how it was last season...

jax, please do NOT read the remainder of this post. It's for your own good.
Excerpts from the Dispatch

Spotlight on Dunn said:
New Reds manager Dusty Baker prefers aggressive hitters. He has dismissed walks as "just clogging up the bases," and he emphasized yesterday that he hates to see a called third strike. The conversation naturally turned to Dunn, who is annually among the league leaders in walks and strikeouts.

"I'll bet you he gets better," Baker said. "He's from Texas, right? Not a cow in Texas if he don't get better. He wants to get better. I told him, Barry Bonds always told me he thought Dunn's swing could be one of the best around."
.
.
.
"I think that's when I get in trouble," Dunn said. "I let so many good pitches go and I get myself in a hole. You can't hit like that."
LINK

Word from Reds camp said:
? Notable: Dusty Baker said he has talked to his young hitters, particularly first baseman Joey Votto, about being more aggressive. "A lot of times (the emphasis on) on-base percentage is taking away the aggressiveness of young people to swing the bat," he said. "Let it fly, man."

Bob Hunter's Rumblings said:
Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker insists that top prospect Jay Bruce has a fair chance to win the starting center fielder's job. But it is telling that Baker has expressed concern about Bruce's history of leg problems and that the Reds then signed outfielder Corey Patterson, who played for Baker with the Chicago Cubs.
.
.
.
Baker has a reputation for preferring veterans (even some mediocre ones) over youngsters. But this Reds team seems to have a lot of talented young players and a handful of mediocre veterans to compete with them, so this season could go a long way toward proving or dispelling Baker's reputation

Every article about the Reds this morning touched on this clown's stupid-ass attitudes towards walks and veterans. Fuckin' awesome. :smash:

At the least the media is noting his obvious character flaws. When the team is in the shitter by June and the offense has gone to hell, hopefully the writers will have enough knowledge to point at the real cause. :(
