Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Saw something on RZ about how Baker thinks putting the young starters in the bullpen to start off. I don't have an opinion one way or the other on whether it's actually good for the kids - but anything that gets Majewski, Stanton & Coffey fired is just fine by me. Hopefully Roenicke puts it together in the coming weeks. It'd be nice to have relievers that throw harder than me for a change.

I love the idea if they don't make the rotation and there are innings available for them...No pressure a lot of the times, and a chance to get some major league innings...The list is long of guys that this has worked for...

The Reds defeated the Twins 6-1 this afternoon. Opposite-field 3-run homer for Jerry Gil, 2-run double for Jolbert Cabrera. 2 scoreless innings apiece from Fogg and Belisle. Scoreless innings from Mercker, Stanton, Cordero, and Mike Lincoln. Weathers allowed an unearned run in 1 inning.

Reds notebook
Long relief could await young arms; Minor-league duty not a Baker favorite
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The talk of the Reds' camp this spring has been the good, young arms.
Three of the best belong to right-handers Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey and Edinson Volquez. All three are in the race for the starting rotation. They also have options.
So, if they don't make the rotation, will they start the year in the minors?

only downside is starting their arb clocks early.

I missed this gem from Dusty earlier this week:

When Baker was asked who would hit leadoff when Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper aren?t playing, he said: "I hope one or the other is in the game."

That would appear not to bode well for the Jay Bruce's chance. But it should be noted that not one game has been played. Josh Hamilton went from an after thought an everyday player with a great spring.

Can't say as I'm suprised.

Watch this fucktard take AB's from EE and Bruce for Freel and Hopper while destroying the young arms at the same time.

You just know its coming.

Dan O'Brien's emphasis on player development as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds seems to have paid off. Baseball America's list of the top 100 prospects came with a wrinkle for central Ohio fans: The Reds had a much heavier and higher concentration of prospects on the list than the Cleveland Indians.
Outfielder Jay Bruce is the magazine's No. 1 prospect. The Reds also have right-handed pitcher Homer Bailey at No. 9, right-hander Johnny Cueto at No. 34, first baseman/outfielder Joey Votto at No. 44 and outfielder Drew Stubbs at No. 100.

I thought the same thing...

Honestly I don't mind this one that much...I am a big Kepp fan, and not so much of Gonzo...

I wouldn't count out Jerry Gil. He was the D-Backs SS of the future prior to Stephen Drew. He has some pop, K's too much... Baker will probably love him.

Bailey shows a majors attitude
21-year-old acting like veteran on mound - and at the mic
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Homer Bailey's first outing of the spring was a good one. He started and went two scoreless innings in the Reds' 7-6 exhibition loss to Tampa Bay Friday.
He pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning with a strikeout and groundball. He then made quick work of the second inning.
