Gonzalez out at least 3 weeks
Knee fracture sidelines shortstop
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Shortstop Alex Gonzalez has a compression stress fracture of the left knee and is on crutches, barred from baseball activity for three weeks. He'll be re-evaluated then.
Three weeks takes his inactivity to March 21.
Eight spring training games remain at that point. Players are usually given a week of working out before they're put in a game - that's if they're cleared to play.

Gil's bat shines, but then his quad balks; Bothersome injury hampers his bid to make the team
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Jerry Gil was playing well enough this spring to get some attention.
He probably was not going to make the team, but he was showing that he could have a future in the big leagues.
Gil has two hits, including a three-run homer, in the Reds' first two games. His speed and arm are well above major-league standards. That, along with his versatility - he can play shortstop, third base and the outfield - caught Dusty Baker's attention.

Something to smile about
Phillips wins over fans now as Reds play for tomorrow
BY PAUL DAUGHERTY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Anticipation hates a vacuum, so spring eyes have swerved from Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn to Jay (Big Thing) Bruce and Johnny Cueto.
Some of us wanted the Reds to trade a kid or two this offseason, for a quality starting pitcher. Deal the mystery of Later, for a solid slice of Now.
That's probably not going to happen. Get ready for 2008 to be one long test drive on the road to 75 or 80 wins.

Rosales makes an impression early in camp
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Adam Rosales says he's at Reds camp for the fun and experience. He also could end up with the Opening Day shortstop job.
It's a long shot - a real long shot. Rosales has played just 67 games above the Single-A level.
But with Alex Gonzalez almost certainly out for Opening Day, Reds manager Dusty Baker is looking at all possibilities, and Rosales has caught his eye. Rosales went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the Reds' 12-11 win over the Pirates Saturday. He's 5-for-8 with a double, home run and four runs scored.

Per John Fay, via RedsZone, the Reds have signed Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston, Jr. to minor league contracts.

First let me get my comments on Hairston out of the way. To say he represents replacement level production is probably being generous. Plus he has performance-enhancing drug baggage (he should probably get a refund *rimshot*). I'd say this one is a head-scratcher, but when you account for this being the Reds, managed by Dusty Baker, it unfortunately makes perfect sense.

As for Patterson, in theory this could be a solid move if Patterson is used right. Unfortunately we're talking about the aforementioned Reds and Dusty Baker, so we're probably looking at Patterson batting leadoff and patrolling the OF between Dunn and Griffey on opening day. I think he makes sense for the Reds as a 4th or 5th OF, defensive replacement and spot starter. What we'll probably see though is Patterson coming north, playing everyday, all while taking ST at-bats from Jay Bruce and relegating him to AAA for the year.

At least these are minor league deals, so they represent the lowest possible amount of risk for the Reds. Either guy will come cheap if they end up on the roster, and if they don't the Reds aren't really out anything. Some guys on RZ are saying (hoping out loud perhaps) that this is a precursor to a trade (Freel?). I don't see that happening though - just a gut feeling.

I don't see the reasoning behind not having Bruce in CF on opening day and there for the entire season...

Same thing for Votto at first...

These are the guys of the future...They may take some lumps at times, but there is no way that you can tell me they aren't going to do at least what the other guys are going to do...

As for the signing of Patterson, we already have Hopper and Freel for that role of speed off the bench, defensive replacement...

Honestly I really like what Dickerson has done so far in ST and last year, and would really like to see him improve in AAA and be up later in the season...Think he could be the opening day CF next year if one of Griffey or Dunn are moved, gone, and we move Bruce to one of the corner outfield spots...

They are minor league contracts for both so what the hell...

Sweet sassy motherfucking molassy...you knew shit like this was coming but it's still shocking when they actually do it.

Have I ever mentioned I hate being a Reds fan?

I think we just gotta wait and see what they do with these guys before going crazy...

If you believed the negative reds fans at the moment our lineup would have Hatte, Castro, and Patterson in it...

Then the rotation would be Harang, Arroyo, Belisle, Affeldt, Fogg

Then not to talk about the bullpen which would have Stanton, magic Man, and some other bums...

Lets let it all work out before we go crazy, and if those guys are all in the lineup and on the team, maybe it just means that they just want to wait a little longer on the younger guys...

Baker glad to have Patterson
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

Reds manager Dusty Baker today said the Corey Patterson signing will be good for the club and promote competition, but added that the move does not necessarily mean Jay Bruce won?t make the team.
The Reds signed Patterson and Jerry Hairston on Monday. As of this morning, neither player was at camp yet.
Baker said Patterson hasn?t come close to his potential.

Affeldt throws better this time
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

Jeremy Affeldt passed a major test in his second outing of the spring: He threw his changeup proficiently.
"It was my most effective pitch," he said. "That's what I'm going to go home smiling about. I'm really, really happy with it."
Affeldt pitched three innings Monday against Minnesota, allowing one run on one hit. He walked two and struck out one.
