Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

A few more tidbits from Chris Welsh earlier today...

You can pretty much bank on the Harang, Arroyo, Belisle, Fogg, Affeldt rotation barring an injury or implosion. Cueto might make it as a long reliever. Expect Bailey to start in AAA, but be on the fast track to make it back up during the season. Said he doesn't know why people say Cueto is small like Pedro... said more like "Pedro's big brother."

Reds keep an eye on talented young arms

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SARASOTA, Fla. -- There are no finished products at this point in spring training. Pitchers are still refining their breaking pitches and hitters are trying to regain their timing. The one-on-one battles are reduced to their most basic level, and raw ability shines brighter than ever.
In that light, it makes sense that minor-league outfielder Drew Anderson is the Cincinnati Reds' leading hitter, and Chris Dickerson, a physical marvel with a hole in his swing, had a double, triple, home run and stolen base on the opening weekend.

Excerpts from the Dispatch

Every article about the Reds this morning touched on this clown's stupid-ass attitudes towards walks and veterans. Fuckin' awesome. :smash:

At the least the media is noting his obvious character flaws. When the team is in the shitter by June and the offense has gone to hell, hopefully the writers will have enough knowledge to point at the real cause. :(

As long as Dusty is saying be aggressive with pitches you can do some damage to I actually have no problem with this approach. Now, if he is of the belief they should be up there swinging at anything to avoid a BB then I have a big issue.

I honestly don't believe anyone outside of Boone/Miley/Narron is dumb enough to encourage the latter and Dunn does take too many good pitches.

The BB=base clogging concept still scares the bejesus out of me but I honestly think the media is overblowing this be more aggressive thing. Time will tell.

My real heartburn is going to come when and if he proves his vet loving tendencies to be true but even that may protect the young pitchers so I guess I'm already trying to find silver linings in another cloudy Reds season.

Word from Reds camp

Sunday, March 9, 2008 4:35 AM

HOME FIELD: ED SMITH STADIUM, SARASOTA, FLA. WEB SITE: WWW.REDS.COM

Yesterday's game: Beat Atlanta 13-8. There were 30 mph winds blowing straight out to center field, and the score reflected it. Jeremy Affeldt allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Brandon Phillips hit a two-run double, a wind-aided home run and a sacrifice fly, giving him two homers and nine RBI in the past two games.

Comfortably numbered
Can the Reds contend or (dare we ask) even win the NL Central? Stat gurus say yes - if the team makes the right choices.
BY JOHN ERARDI | [email protected]

SPECIAL REPORT
As the Reds take shape in Sarasota, no doubt you are wondering a lot of things. But mostly you're wondering: Do the Reds finally have enough talent to contend, after seven straight losing seasons?
Today, with the help of a couple of stat gurus known as sabermetricians, we produce reasonable answers to those questions through the use of objective analysis.
If you're a baseball fan, you've been using stats your whole life.

Baker judges by his senses
Knowing what makes his players tick more important than their stats

The best baseball managing is done by the seat of your pants, using good, old-fashioned, pre-sabermetric logic. That's another reason to like Dusty Baker. (Beyond his knowledge of single-malt Scotches and Van Morrison lyrics, which is merely astounding and downright Renaissance.) If Baker manages by a book, it's one inside his head, not one written by Bill James.
The other day, the Reds manager decided he wanted Joey Votto and Adam Dunn to swing their bats more. "I don't like called third strikes," Baker said.
Can we get an Amen?

Volquez just smoked ARod and Giambi. Jr just dove hard for one and just missed... glad to see he is feeling good. Volquez looks like a total stud. Although he seems to throw across his body, kinda like Kerry Wood. Not a drop and drive like Nolan Ryan. Worries me a bit about the injury potential. Ks Matsui to end the inning.

Bailey looked like he needs some more time in AAA. Still doesn't quite have the command you'd like to see.

Wayne K was on the broadcast earlier. Didn't have much of interest to say, although seemed to indicate that "whoever" plays center will probably hit lead off... including Bruce who is in that spot tonight and has a couple of hits already.

The young arms have me really really excited about the future...Not just this year, but for the next couple...

I honestly don't have a clue in what direction we will go in terms of the rotation and the fielders on the roster for the opening day roster...

What I do hope is that Stanton and Castro aren't on the roster, and I believe that Homer will be in AAA...His stuff is electric at times, but just like tonight he had some great pitches in between duds, and pitches where he can't find his control...Well at least that is what I read...

I also am really warming up to Janish...I knew he had a good glove, and not much offense, and with us already having a C that is like that in Ross, not sure we can afford to give away three outs with SS, C, and P everytime thru the lineup...

And one last thing...Bruce better be the opening day CF...
