Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

The young arms have me really really excited about the future...Not just this year, but for the next couple...

I honestly don't have a clue in what direction we will go in terms of the rotation and the fielders on the roster for the opening day roster...

What I do hope is that Stanton and Castro aren't on the roster, and I believe that Homer will be in AAA...His stuff is electric at times, but just like tonight he had some great pitches in between duds, and pitches where he can't find his control...Well at least that is what I read...

I also am really warming up to Janish...I knew he had a good glove, and not much offense, and with us already having a C that is like that in Ross, not sure we can afford to give away three outs with SS, C, and P everytime thru the lineup...

And one last thing...Bruce better be the opening day CF...

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Stanton was painful to watch last year but honesty the Reds might keep him for depth with their lack of left-handed relief. But what is depth if it isn't quality depth?

As far as the young arms... I can't help but think Bailey is going to show up, I mean can the #9 prospect in all of baseball really not master his control? (I know it's possible but I refuse to believe it.) Volquez has looked amazing as I said and if the reports are accurate Cueto has looked even better!

I would love Bruce at CF, but the Reds have all but documented that the CF will hit leadoff, and Bruce at leadoff makes me nervous just because that seems like a tough spot for rookie, especially one that doesn't normally hit there. His talent is undeniable though and comparing him to the likes of Freel doesn't even seem worth contemplating. I'd love to find room for Patterson and Freel on the team just for depth but I don't know they can keep 3 of the 4 players fighting for CF.

Needless to say I'm also filled with spring optimism for the Redlegs.

We're going to have 0 Lefties in the starting rotation and that hurts. The lefties in the bullpen are either ancient or injury prone. Ouch.

Harang, Arroyo, Volquez, Cueto and Belisle are my guess at opening day starters. I wouldnt mind seeing Belisle as long relief and maybe Affeldt as the 5th starter and only lefty if he can get it together. Bailey down in AAA. Bruce and Votto seem to be encroaching on the lineup which is definitely a plus. Jr. is still healthy at this point and Dunn seems to have energy. Brandon Phillips is definitely ready to go but the guy actually loves to play baseball for Cincinnati so how refreshing is that!

The in game management is going to be adventurous every time out so hold on to your hats!

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Like many kids with stars in their eyes, Brandon Phillips began practicing his autograph in high school, dreaming of the day fans clamored for it. He used his full given name: Brandon Emil Phillips.

"It was pretty, too," he said.
But cumbersome. When he reached the big leagues in 2002 and actually encountered fans clamoring for his autograph, it became apparent the pretty, long version took too much time. So he downsized.

I never really thought that Cueto would be in the discussion in terms of making the rotation...

I had always assumed it would be Harang/Arroyo/Belisle/Voloquez/one of Bailey,Fogg,Affeldt

Then I kinda thought they would go without any of the young guys in the rotation and had Fogg and Affeldt in the backend of the rotation, and maybe put Voloquez in the pen...

Now, and I know it is not a smart thing to base decisions on spring training, but it really seems that maybe just maybe Cueto is close...He doesn't seem to get hard, he is making big league hitters look stupid, and posting good numbers...

Also Voloquez has been plain sick so far especially his last outing...

Homer looks destined for Louisville for a while to work on control...

As of right now I would like to put Affeldt in the pen, and cut Stanton and go with Affeldt and maybe Cooter from the left side...

Then have a rotation of Harang/Arroyo/Belisle/Voloquez/Fogg...

Then in the pen Cordero, Weathers, Burton, Coffey, Affeldt, Cooter, Magic Man, and maybe one more...

I know I am probably leaving someone out and the chances of us cutting stanton are low and I would also love to see Roenicke get a look as his stuff seems to be electric out of the pen, but think it would be better to get him some time at AAA and probably best for Cueto as well until someone gets hurt or tanks like I feel that Fogg could do, but if we can get good numbers out of him for a while and same with Affeldt, you never know we could trade him at the deadline and feel very good about the options we have to bring up in Cueto, Bailey and even Garder or Shearn who I think could give solid spot starts if needed to for whatever reasons...Also we still have Bobby Livingston who is on the IR for a while, but we liked him enough to sign him to a contract while hurt...

That is a lot to wrap your head around there, and all off the top of my head, but I love the direction we are going in with the young talent...It all needs to be up by midseason and getting time as 09 will be our best year and they all need to be ready to go...

Just a solid solid list of young guys
Bailey
Cueto
Voloquez
Roenicke
Pelland
Bruce
Votto
Dickerson

Right now there isn't much evidence that tells you these guys are going to struggle in the pros, other than Bailey struggling at times, but he just needs to get his control down and quit throwing a great pitch followed by a dud...

Also throw in guys like Phillips, Dunn, EE, Harang, Cordero who are still in the good part of their career and we are looking at a run at something here in Cincy...

There is speculation around Cincinnati Reds camp that the team is willing to trade first baseman Scott Hatteberg and infielder-outfielder Ryan Freel.
Trading Hatteberg makes sense because he is likely to be stuck behind Joey Votto, who is younger, more talented and also hits left-handed. Hatteberg's contract
($1.5 million) is reasonable, so he figures to attract some interest. But if he doesn't, his modest salary would allow Cincinnati to keep him as a pinch-hitter.

Maybe special fucking K should have thought about trading Freel before the insanely bloated contract extension and two more years to prove his fragility?

Just sayin.
