Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I've given up on this season and am instead going over to MLB Power Pros on the Wii, where I'll GM the Reds for about 10 years and see if I can do better.

It's a pretty realistic game, though. I mean, in a tight one versus the Cubs yesterday, I brought Weathers in for the 9th ('07 rosters) and he promptly gave up a solo HR, a double, and a single before striking out a batter and inducing a double play to end it.

In that respect, it's just like watching the real Reds, though the carnival only lasts about 20 minutes instead of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Reds rookie Jay Bruce argues with umpire Bob Davidson after he was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the ninth inning.

CINCINNATI -- The gentle giant flashed an impish grin and a little of the sarcastic wit that so endears him to teammates. After a few questions and a few cliches, the giant began to breathe fire. Not a lot, but enough to prove it is there, if the back of his baseball card is not sufficient proof.
Adam Dunn, the Reds' best hitter and most polarizing player, does not appreciate the image that he is indifferent toward the game.
"It (expletive) me off, people who have no idea what the (expletive) goes on here," he said yesterday, before another lackluster loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, this one 7-4.

Do the Reds go and intentionally look for dumb players or do they get that way when they get here?

I've seen this movie before... this is the chicken-egg debate, and what i've always found is that no one really knows which came first, we just know that we now have both, and the cycle repeats itself. Over, and over, and over....

I'm thinking you put a red helmet with a C on and you lose an ass load of IQ points. I don't think some of these guys had that many to be playing with in the first place.

Actually, the Reds' helmets have a little radio transmitter that broadcasts Farney's voice. It's not just in Freel's head. :paranoid:

Bronson apparently decided that going from 2 straight 14 win seasons ('05 BOS, '06 CIN), including a 3.29 era in '06, to 9-15 last year, with a 4.23 ernie, is totally fixable, by? yep..... filming commercials. Radio and Tv.

Not just commercials. "Together Again" is earmarked (pork-barreled), whatever the fuck you call it, as one of my all time least favorite yet stupidly hilarious commercials. JTM= Jesus, That's Meat???? Sadly I watch the Reds closely enough that it is entrenched in my brain, and it would take a whole new level of suckitude to forget these Chris Welsh Oscar moment wannabes. But I fuckin laugh, you know, to not cry.

But hey, we beat the Yankees tonight... i'll sleep on that

Edinson Volquez allowed two runs in seven innings while improving his record to 10-2.

NEW YORK -- Edinson Volquez had a wry grin on his face and a twinkle in his eyes after his first game against the New York Yankees. The Cincinnati Reds picked up a win, and he struck out buddy Melky Cabrera in a key spot.
Volquez's next start in Yankee Stadium could be even more fun.
He pitched seven effective innings in Cincinnati's first game in the Bronx in 32 years, and the Reds beat the Yankees 4-2 last night to end a five-game skid.
"He was sharp, didn't look like the crowd or Yankee Stadium bothered him at all," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I mean, he was out there just as poised as we'd always seen him."
