Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

At the rate Bailey is losing velocity, Herrera will be throwing harder than him by this time next year.

I'd like to know if he is losing velocity or is concentrating so much on his control that he is sacrificing it or if it is injury related or if it's a problem between his ears. Marty and Hal McCoy were talking about Dusty comparing Volquez and Cueto to a young Smoltz and Glavine, saying how far ahead they are at this point in their career. He said Homer is not in that "advanced" category, saying he doesn't have the breaking stuff and change up. I'm kind of getting the vibe that the organization is souring on him.

The bad thing is he had the stuff and they told him to quit throwing it. His curveball coming in was 12 to 6 with 95+ on his fastball. That to me is good freaking stuff. They got him so ingrained on his control that he cant pitch anymore. Fastball, changeup, curve- go win some freaking games. If you hit a few batters along the way due to control issues, all the more better as guys wont dig in against you in the future, ask John Kruk.

Unfortunately guys like Dunn, Homer and Freel will excel with a change of scenery because they wont have to "save" the franchise and be able to just go play ball. They'll never be their best in Cincinnati and that is a shame.

I think Homer got kind of a raw deal with the timing of his call-up. First two starts against the Cardinals and Red Sox? Why not lobby to have him start the All-Star Game? Doesn't excuse two piss poor outings, but they could have at least given him a patsy team to warm up. Are the Reds panicking about Harrang?

Has anyone heard the latest on Jr. waiving his No-Trade clause for a trade to Tampa?

I think if Griffey goes, then there will be more to follow between now and the All-Star break. I hope so. Thoughts??

it's all just a rumor at this point.

i can't see it happening because i don't know why the Rays would do it. they're actually good now, and the reason they are is because of their young talent. they're going to throw their future young talent away for a year or two of an aging Jr? I love the Kid, but that just doesn't make sense.

Griffey was quoted "It was a team effort, we've had this day marked on the calender for months since before the season started."

Dunn was quoted "Anybody seen my 9 iron?"

The reporter asked Dusty about it, but he just sat there staring vacantly into space, a drop of spittle creeping slowly down his chin.

Votto leading off tonight...I am going to try and not watch it...

Check out what ole Dusty had to say about it...

?Votto leading off today,? said manager Dusty Baker. ?Corey (Patterson) wasn?t getting on base and Jay Bruce is struggling some.

O'Realy...Patterson wasn't getting on base...Hell a blind man looking at stats would of known that...What the fuck took this guy so long to figure it out...

Didn't watch the game the other night, but read about it a little bit and Dusty not pinch hitting for patterson because he said he didn't have another outfielder, even tho Phillips and Cabrera have both played the outfield at some point in their minor league careers...What an idiot, and the other reason was that Patterson hits lefties better than rightites...His .153 avg against lefties would say otherwise IMHO...

Dusty throwing everything against the wall, seeing if something sticks.

I like having Votto in the leadoff spot. I HATE having Cabrera in the #2 spot between him and Bruce. Nothing like making sure any baserunners are erased or innings are ended by double plays right before one of your best hitters comes up.

EDIT: like that one. I bet Votto gets erased on a double play every time he reaches base tonight.

I can understand those of you who haven't been watching this. I don't blame you.

I've had the game on, but mostly as background noise. However, I did just see Brandon Phillips make the best play we'll probably see by a second baseman all year.

The Dodgers had a man on first, and the batter hit a grounder up the middle to the SS side of the bag. Phillips backhanded it while sliding toward LF. Jolbert Cabrera, our shining star of a SS couldn't even get to the ball on his side of the bag, let alone cover the base for Phillips. So, Phillips got up from his slide (which was taking him in the opposite direction), took it to the bag himself, and fired a perfect throw to Votto while leaping over the baserunner to finish the double play.

It's a shame that great plays like that get wasted on this loser team.

I watched very little of the game, by the sickest part of me had it turned on for the ninth inning. It was an unbelievable play.
