Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

I am not sure about your comparisons to Arroyo though. Maybe I am missing the point?

Just saying that if lohse put up those pie in the sky numbers (180 IP sub 4.5 ERA) he is essentially the same as Arroyo will probably be in a non career year. I'd love to be wrong but I don't see anyway in hell that happens.

Almost on que, article on Lohse. Included is some info about his tiff with Minny management. In addition to this, he was demoted to the pen and even spent some time in the minors.

Things had soured a bit for Lohse in Minnesota. The Twins took him to arbitration each of the last two years; Lohse won.
"But that's no fun," he said. "Ask Wayne about it. It's kind of ugly in there."
Krivsky prepared Minnesota's case as assistant GM there. This year, Lohse signed for $4.2 million on Jan. 7 - well before his case was scheduled to go to arbitration.

Freel on his position on the team.

I still think it would be great for Deno, Hopper or (outside possibility) Hamilton to step up and be the every day RF or CF. Freel's value is as a utility guy and playing every day in the OF is a waste of his real talent. His production also tends to slip a lot when he plays every day. Denoforia would be nice because he could fill the leadoff hitter role every day also.

Listening to local Cincy sports radio this morning. The local guy said his read on Narron's comments of late are that he would love for Josh Hamilton to step up and take the CF job and move Griffey to RF. Hamilton will see time in CF this spring. Griff's arm is healed and he is working on strength. He should be ready to go for the first game next week.

It sounds to me like Hamilton is not going to be a Wily Mo type project (riding the pine for 2 years, eating up a roster spot). I think they are going to throw him out there everyday during the spring to see if he can cut it. If not, I think he gets cut loose. Either way, I think Hamilton or Freel and maybe Denorfia will be the every day CF and Griff in RF.

That has been the same feel I've had on this situation also. He'll have to contribute or be very close to contributing everyday. I know he'll get a lot of AB's every chance he gets in spring.

If Hamilton turns his career around that would be huge for this team...

He can step right in and play MLB defense right now. He hasn't seen MLB pitching in over 2 years. Don't let spring training numbers fool you if he even puts up some decent ones, this kid is not going to be a factor offensively.

Good Read on Votto

.......

Votto, a 23-year-old first baseman, arguably had the best year of any Reds minor-leaguer - including prized pitching prospect Homer Bailey.
Votto led the Southern League in hitting (.319), runs (85), hits (162), doubles (46), walks (78), on-base (.408) and slugging (.547). He was second in homers (22) and third in RBI (77).
"The way he swung the bat yesterday, I can see why he put up those numbers," Reds manager Jerry Narron said.
Narron said that after seeing Votto take right-hander Brian Meadows out to all fields in live batting practice.
"Any time you've got a young guy who uses all fields, he's got a chance to be successful," Narron said.
Votto is the Bailey of position players - you could make a case that he's ready now, but the Reds are going to be patient with him.

Competition for the 11(and possibly)12th pitching spots.

The competition for the fifth spot in the rotation points to that. Kirk Saarloos, Victor Santos and Wilson all have had years in which they won more than 10 games in the big leagues.
Matt Belisle, Elizardo Ramirez and Bobby Livingston are young with good arms and big upsides.
Belisle is the guy - other than Wilson - whom coaches and scouts are talking about being impressive early in camp.
Things will begin sorting themselves out when the games start Thursday.
But there probably will be some tough calls at the end of March. Consider: Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, Milton, Kyle Lohse, Mike Stanton, David Weathers, Todd Coffey, Rheal Cormier, Bill Bray and Saarloos probably have the team made. That's 10 spots.
If Saarloos takes the fifth spot, Belisle, Wilson, Ramirez, Santos, Brian Shackelford and Gary Majewski would be among the others battling for the 11th and/or 12th spots.
When camp started, Majewski would have been considered a lock. But he's more than a week behind because of his sore shoulder. He does have options, so he could start the year at Triple-A.

I could feel it before ST started and its going to come to fruition. Paul Wilson is going to make this team as the #5 starter. The Reds have had a penchant for the "Comeback Player of the Year" and I feel it. This year will be Paul Wilson. No all star performance but about 11 or 12 wins and an ERA hovering at 4. The beauty of this is that we'll be more inclined to deal a guy like Milton, that Krivsky loves and fans dont, without losing that veteran experience and bring in Homer by the all star break.

Now if we can just find enough offense! C'mon Hamilton, give Wilson a run for his CPOY honors. Hehe.

I would love to see this happen...In the 5 hole he would not be facing the guys he went up against a couple years ago when he had his career year...
