Reds notebook
Don't count out Coffey as team's regular closer

SARASOTA, Fla. - Todd Coffey isn't clamoring for another shot at being the Reds' closer.
"I'm clamoring to be in a big-league uniform on April 2," he said. "That's all I care about. Everything else is a plus."
That is not to say Coffey won't take another shot at closing. He'd like one because of how badly his turn in the role went last year.

Hmmmm. Imagine if you will a healthy Paul Wilson. Could we get a surprise out of spring training? Not. It is fun to dream though isnt it?

Fun dream, yes. He's a good guy, wish he wasn't completely at the end of his physical ability to throw the ball.

I'm actually hoping Votto makes the jump sooner than later and is able to provide us with a little extra pop in the lineup.

Votto projects out to be the prototypical reds 1B of late. A big guy who doesn't have big guy power. Don't expect much more than MLB average 1B production from him. The good part is he'll be a cheap young guy giving us that for the first time in a long time and there's always hope with a young guy.

Re: Jr. and Dunn-

I've been saying for over 2 years now that if Dunn and Griffey would shave about 20 pounds off each that injuries and stamina problems will all but disappear. Jr's fram cannot take the pounding anymore so the extra mass is only keeping him out of the lineup. Dunn's speed would increase and his stamina late in the year would improve dramatically if he shaved off some poounds. I guess we'll wait and see what camp brings.

Jr can be in as good a shape and mentally ready as he wants to be, he has reached the end. He can still have brief flashes of the old days but never for very long. That guy is gone forever.

Dunn, sure losing 20 lbs can't hurt but its not going to make him the .300/50 HR/130 RBI guy that people seem to expect.

I know it's a couple days old, but hasn't been posted. Mostly of note are Narron's comments on Lohse.

Odds and ends

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Not too much exciting here today. I saw most of the pitchers and catchers already and the Reds expect everyone to report by midnight.

Here's a bit of what Jerry Narron had to say:

"We?re looking for Kyle Lohse to really break out and have a big year. Stuff-wise he?s as good as anybody. Just watching him on the side today, his changeup is outstanding. The big thing is if we can get him ahead in the count and throwing fewer pitches, I think he can be really effective. I know Dick Pole is looking forward to working with him."

"The four starters we have for sure, if we can keep them healthy and run them out there 35 times, we can have some good things happen for us."

on the bullpen: "The one thing about it is, they?ve all pitched in every situation possible out of the bullpen. We?ve got a couple of young guys in Coffey and Bray and then the veterans, Stanton, Weathers and Cormier, you can?t get a whole lot more experienced than that group. Brian Meadows is in camp and he had seven or eight saves last year. (It was 8 for Tampa Bay) Saarloos is a guy who can start and pitch out of the bullpen. Outside of not having a closer, our pitching is as good as it has been here in a while, I think."

Also, Eddie Guardado said he's shooting for a June 20 return. The significance of that date? It's when the Reds visit his old team, the Mariners.

Man, Majewski with a bad wing makes an already bad trade look even worse.

I'll take any comments from Narron with a huge grain of salt. He said a lot of nice stuff about Royce Clayton too.

Pitchers and Cathchers have reported(otherwise known as a PSU LOI day :wink2: ) so baseball season is upon us. Good times.

I am really anxious to see what kind of duct tape they try to put on the pitching staff this season, but there is really only one thing that jumps out at me in this article.

Dick Pole?

That is awesome.

Griffey was injured while wrestling with kids
He finally tells how left hand was broken

FROM WIRE REPORTS

SARASOTA, Fla. ? Finally, Cincinnati Reds center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. revealed how he suffered a broken left hand in the offseason. Griffey said he was wrestling with his daughter and two younger sons on his yacht in the Bahamas in December when his 13-year-old son, Trey, knocked him off balance. Griffey landed on his left hand.

Good stuff from Narron, I have always been high on Lohse as he seemed to have some problems in Minny with ownership and stuff...

I would love for him to have a breakout year...

Not good news on Majeski...

What could we really expect best case? 10-14 wins and around 4.25+ ERA? That would likely move him above Milton as the 3. Point being you can only get so excited about Lohse. I can't imagine the management problems caused that much of his trouble.

Exactly.

If Lohse gives us 180+ IP and a sub 4.5 ERA he's our #3 and probably not that much different than Arroyo. I'll believe it when I see it.

BTW Krivsky was part of the management in Minny when Lohse was having all these issues was he not?

My first instinct tells me that it was the manager and that Lohse was actually very happy when Krivsky pulled him out of there. I'll try to research it tomorrow if I can find anything on it. I remember he wasn't starting when we got him before he left Minny and that had something to do with it.

I am not sure about your comparisons to Arroyo though. Maybe I am missing the point?

Good read on Hamilton

If, by some miracle of God, this kid somehow lived up to his potential, what a great find it would be. I just hope he is able to contribute enough to keep him around without hurting our chances this year.

He seems to say all the right things and has the right support group in place to stay clean. Keep our collective fingers crossed.
