Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

I agree the speed in the Outfield will be outstanding, but can you imagine how bad it could be if we place Connine in the game for Freel in Right and we go Griff, Donkey and Connine...That would be the slowest OF in the majors...

You simply cannot put that out there with our pitching. If narron ever does he should be fired immediatley.

I didnt really follow Dino thru the majors, but he strictly a contact type, hitter or does he have pop like say a Phillips...

Projects as the prototypical leadoff guy. If he doesn't make it this year he needs to be traded asap. getting too old for AAA.

Also what is your take on Elizardo, do you think he is going to fall off the map or do you think he could make an impact this year...He really pitched well at times last year, but then fell off the map...

The Lizard was by far the hard luck pitcher on the staff for the first part of the year then the wheels sorta fell off so hard to say. IMO, his ceiling is 4th or 5th starter type at best. Much like Milton and Lohse he's good for about 4-5 IP then he gets lit up. I wish we had a manger creative enough to have tandem starts at the end of the rotation...ie use 2 guys but no more than 4IP each. We have several guys who just might excel in that scenario. Certainly can't hurt.

Pitching wise in 2007 as much as I hate to rely on a rookie and don't want to rush him I think Homer is the key. Arroyo and Harang alone are just not enough but if Homer gives us a credible 3rd starter at any point in the year....ya never know.

Does Dino have any more options?

Freel was 28 when he finally got his shot, I just hate to give up on a guy with that kinda speed. Could always use him as a utility type OF...

But I also think it should be an interesting battle between he, Hopper, and Hamilton...

Never really thought of a rotation like that, but that is a good idea...I think Belisle and the Lizard would be amazing for that.

I thought some of Elizardo's problems were arm fatigue...He is still young, so I still have hope for him, being a #4 type guy, and that would be great if we could get Homer up here.

A staff of Harang, Arroyo, Bailey, Elizardo, and one of the other guys and you are looking at a staff that could stay together for a couple years...

Is this a contract year for Milton? Maybe a little money motivation could make him a plausable 3rd starter. Or, at best we loose 10 mill off the books for 08.

Yep contract year. I remember Marty saying something about that maybe he'll be a little more productive this year due to that. It won't really open up any cash as Harang and Arroyo's contracts will be bumping up in the next couple of years.

Arroyo and Harang's signings essentially just took up the money that will be cleared from JR and Milton.

As far as Milton being decent in a contract year I don't think so. His problem is degenrative knees, not a bad attitude or anything. His short bursts of decency the past couple of years always correspond with a long rest right before a few good outings. Once the knees start to groan, the moonshots begin.

One of the bright spots for me as a Reds fan in 2007 will be knowing that every Milton start we have to suffer through gets us one closer to never seeing him again.

Nuxhall in hospital
BY JENNIFER BAKER | [email protected]

Reds baseball legend Joe Nuxhall is expected to remain in a Florida hospital for a few more days while doctors conduct medical tests for a recurrence of lymphoma, his son said today.
In Florida for the team's annual spring training, Nuxhall, 78, went to Sarasota Memorial Hospital Wednesday for previously scheduled tests related to complications from lymphoma, said his son, Kim Nuxhall.
Hospital officials said today they are not permitted to release patient information.

Better yet, maybe we can hope he signs in division so we can be on the other side of the "moonballs"!

Unless Dan O gets another GM gig in the division I don't think anyone else is dumb enough to sign him.

Majewski ready to throw again

BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Gary Majewski has not thrown a ball since last season ended.
He expects to be cleared when he undergoes his physical Sunday.
"Everything feels good," he said. "But after what I went through last year, they wanted to make sure I strengthened it and got plenty of rest."

Hmmmm. Imagine if you will a healthy Paul Wilson. Could we get a surprise out of spring training? Not. It is fun to dream though isnt it?

I'm actually hoping Votto makes the jump sooner than later and is able to provide us with a little extra pop in the lineup.

Re: Jr. and Dunn-

I've been saying for over 2 years now that if Dunn and Griffey would shave about 20 pounds off each that injuries and stamina problems will all but disappear. Jr's fram cannot take the pounding anymore so the extra mass is only keeping him out of the lineup. Dunn's speed would increase and his stamina late in the year would improve dramatically if he shaved off some poounds. I guess we'll wait and see what camp brings.

Milton sets higher goals
LHP wants to live up to $9M pay

SARASOTA, Fla. - A big indicator of how the Reds do this season will be how well their high-priced starting pitching performs.
We're talking about Eric Milton.
With the emergences and signings of Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo, no one considers Milton any better than the club's third starter. But he still will make $9 million this year - more than Harang and Arroyo combined.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Where better to get an update on Joe Nuxhall than from the Ol' Left-hander himself?
"I'm resting comfortably," he said via phone from his room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. "I could walk out of here right now."
He won't be released, however, until at least Monday.
