Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Beat me to it. Injured most of last year, but logged a 2.04 era with 34 saves in 57 appearances for the ChiSox in 2004. And his career 1.13 GB/FB ratio isn't bad, at least not in comparison to the other guys. :)

He worked out for a few teams without much interest. Local guy, went to same HS as Dave Burba. I get the impression that he might not be ready to start the season, but it's a minor league contract so very low risk.

Josh Hamilton just cracked <no pun intended> a "towering" HR, would be nice if this guy proves to be a find.

Hermanson signed a minor league deal so there is no risk, thats good.

The not so good is every other team in baseball backing off him after his public workout a few months ago. Big loss of velocity and huge concerns about his back ever being right again.

All in all no biggie. No risk possible reward situation.

A couple of good things:

Josh Hamilton- Wow! Its only spring training but if you get a chance to see the clip of that homer, watch it.

Paul Wilson- He gave up the homer and 4 hits through two innings, but he was definitely throwing strikes including 2 K's.

Adam Dunn- 1 for 1 with a homer and a walk. No K's! Keep the focus Adam and we'll be in for a great season.

Ryan Freel- Hit the ball well and ran the bases like we know he can. 1 CS but you give those up with Freel. He also misplayed a grounder.

Kirk Sarloos- Very efficient. Only 7 batters in his 2 innings. I dont know which part of the order he faced.

Jeff Keppinger- I dont know much about him but the kid can hit.

Alex Gonzalez- We know he's got one of the best gloves in the game. Today he went 1 for 2 with an RBI. If he gets 2 RBI's a week this season I'll jump up and down.

The bad things:

The defense was shit. 5 errors.

Eric Milton- Same old, same old.

Chris Denorfia- Did not help himself today at all. O for 3 at the plate and dropped a fly ball. He is on the bubble and even though its just the first game of ST he needs to shine in order to make the team.

Its only Spring Training. I know that. But I want to be optimistic I swear I do. The defense will get better with reps and so will the pitching. Batters timing will improve as the season wears on, but the cogs are in place for a decent year if our guys improve on the little things. Cant wait for tomorrow!

How many of you guys read/post on RedsZone? I've started reading it again over the last couple days to sate my Reds appetite.

I swear, that entire board must be populated by Chris Denorfia's family. They are pimping him like you wouldn't believe.

I've been reading for the past couple of weeks and you're right. I hate to break the news to them though, but he's got little value on this team as far as I'm concerned. If he plays up to potential sure he's an excellent fielder, at times, but his bat in the bigs is going to be awful thin. This team needs more power in the lineup and I don't see Narron keeping a 6th outfielder. The only way Denorfia makes it to the show this season, for the Reds, is through injury or trade. He very well could end up trade bait very soon also.

I share some of their sentiments, but some of those guys are ready to put him in Cooperstown.

I think at best, he should be getting about 2/3 of the starts in CF, with Freel also getting some starts in CF and some starts throughout the rest of the OF and IF, but not starting every day. I think they need at least one of those two in the lineup every day to provide some speed at the top of the order.

I've seen some stuff about Conine being the fourth OF, and I really hope that's not the case. At best he should be platooning at 1B with Hatteberg, but I think Hatteberg should probably be getting the bulk of the ABs.

I'm really hoping Hamilton makes the team, and I think if he shows anything at all, he'll be in Cincinnati on Opening Day.

I'm at RZ nearly as much as here. Yet to see anyone say Deno will be great. The general consensus is that he projects to MLB average offensively and above average in CF. Therefore he would be a major upgrade in CF with Griffey in RF. It has more to do with Narron being a moron and JR appearently calling the shots when he is so obviously done as a CFer. Good, young, cheap replacement rotting away in AAA while griff plays a horrible CF just gets some people riled up.

RZ has some of the most knowledgable baseball fans I've ever encountered. Keep an open mind and you'd be amazed at what you can learn from some of them.

Won't say the guy is great, but both homeruns he gave up were wind-aided in a bigtime way. It sounded (on radio) like they wouldn't have reached the warning track if it weren't for the wind.

It better. This team has been designed around it. We'd be in for a complete disaster if it didn't.

The FO has paid lip service to building the team around it and gone and made one trade in that direction. Gonzalez is a no doubt about it upgrade at the most important defensive position. That all means exactly dick if JR Griffey is in CF this year. You can't preach defense and have the 2nd most important defensive position manned by someone that challenged to cover ground.

This dovetails into the conversation about Deno and RZ above. Deno in CF and Freel in RF has been the thinking persons cry for the better part of 2 years now and it just takes on a life of its own. Its not so much love for Deno or dislike of Griffey. Its the love for the idea of seeing the Reds do the obvious and smart thing for once.

Dustin Hermanson was getting frustrated. A team would take one look at his medical report and lose interest.
Hermanson, 34, a right-hander, missed all but six games last season with lower back problems. The report was from then.
"It's kind of like a guy who had Tommy John 2? years ago," he said. "You can't look at that report, because it was 2? years ago. Somebody looks at my medical from a year and a half ago, and it's tough. But I've had time to find out what works."

Hey Dustin, get down off the cross we need the wood.

You had a chance to make everyone forget those 2 1/2 year old medical reports in your open workout. Only 1 team in baseball wanted anything to do with you afterward and that was for a minor league deal. Something tells me they weren't solely using outdated medical records.

Just say your thankful for the shot and move the fuck on, no one wants to hear your sob story.
