Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

And the bullpen blows it again... FUCK! Maybe it is time to panic after all.

No need to panic. This team will stay within 5 games of .500 pretty much all year barring injuries. They simply are not built to be any better than that.

Were 6 back already so hopefully the brew crew just puts the hammer down and we can punt the season and make some trades. Nothing worse than standing pat on a losing hand because we feel like were still a contender.

Honestly tonite it was our defense that cost us...

That error by EE being the big one, he should of just ate that ball, and they don't score in that inning...

Overall tonite was a well coached ball game, and we just couldnt push a run across when we needed it...

As for the dumpster diving thing, he has hit on some guys and I think credit has to go to someone...

As for the bullpen the problem I have is that hey have the worst ERA in the NL...I understand that bullpens are going to give games up, but give them up and have a middle of the road ERA and we are sitting in 2nd place only 1 or 2 games out instead of 6 back...

I agree with the concept that bullpens give runs up, thats not an issue. The distinction needs to be made between the front and back end of your pen.

The front end guys are the ones you as an opponent want to get to. These are guys who by and large are failed starters, who only have 1 or 2 pitches, control issues, can't miss bats etc. If your rotation sucks the starters are gone by the 5th or 6th every night, these kind of guys just flat get exposed if you run them out there too much. We've fixed that problem in Cincy.

The backend guys are supposed to be a different breed. They are the hard throwers who do indeed miss bats. Their 2 pitches are very hard to do anything with but they can't go very long and they can't go out there every night. Thats what the front end fodder is for. Again a good starting rotation protects the pen from getting exposed if it eats innings and ours does that now.

The problem is, the Reds bullpen is made up 100% of front end guys. We don't have a backend pitcher save for MAYBE Coffey(set up man at best, never a closer imo). Stanton was the premier setup man in MLB for years but those years are gone. Weathers is just another old soft tosser. Yes groundball specialists can work as a backend guy but I would prefer the Rob Dibble package over the Danny Graves one any day of the week.

I think WK is on the right track in stocking up on bullpen guys who throw hard and miss bats but for the short term, what we have will be a dicey situation everytime they are brought in.

Personally, they have Salmon on the team I say give him some work late in a game and lets see what happens. Running Stanton and Weathers out there every night sure as fuck isn't the answer.

100% agree. I say give Coffey/Salmon the late innings and see what happens. It can't be any worse than it is right now. Even though Hermanson was another "old soft tosser" I was hoping he would be able to provide some stability at the back end until Everyday Eddie came back or another option surfaced. Just saw Brantley on Reds Live and he said they need to come out with some attitude and not be afraid to go after hitters. To me, that reflects on Hume. He has had this job for a long time and its been the same old story. From what I remember, Hume never had that edge when he was pitching. Maybe they need to bring in a bullpen coach that can do a better job of preparing the guys mentally.

Last night was a team loss though. Some bad D, bad base running, and bad pitching all contributed to that one. Berry is another guy who drives me nuts, can they not put someone else on third? He sends way too many guys who get nailed easy.

I thought Brantley was going to blow a gasket when Coffey gave up that gopher ball. He had some really good points. 1. You have to be READY to pitch when you come in. 2. You have to be able to throw more than 1 pitch for strikes. He said you can't wait until they put one in the stands before you start throwing your breaking ball. Again, it goes back to the mental/strategy side of the game. Like Jeff said, Coffey has the stuff to be a dominant pitcher. You can throw 100mph but if you are only throwing fastballs, they are going to hit it.

Well, I've been saying Santos was overdue for a meltdown, looks like it was tonight. Edwin HRs to get them back within a run and the pen continues to implode. Brantley: "This bull pen's ERA is headed to infinity."

The only thing I'll say to defend Coffey is that his fucking arm is probably about to fall off he is so overused by numbnuts. that said, Coffey isn't much and he's probably the best we have.

WK has spent a lot of time and money on the pen and its as bad if not worse than when he found it. Past time to start being held accountable imo.

Narron used a different fuckin' lineup in all 3 games this series, I know nothing new, but it just pisses me off...

Today we had a great situation with bases loaded in the first and instead of at least batting Hamilton in a 6 hole instead of putting him in the 7th for god knows what reason, we have Gonzalez come to plate with teh bases loaded...I am so sick of him worrying about this bull shit L-R-L shit...I mean it maybe factors in a game once or if lucky twice a game...

I would rather for the first 6 or 7 innings of the game have by best hitters in spots where they need to be instead of throwing a guy like Gonzalez in between Dunn and Hamilton...

Also why isn't Phillips playing today? I love Freel, but IMO the need for getting him two days in a row was not there...

I also have stopped watching the game today after seeing hte lineup and us piss away our great scoring oppurtunity in the first...:!

Josh Hamilton is just amazing. What a great story. Great win. and halfway decent bullpen work.

CINCINNATI -- Josh Hamilton hit two home runs in support of starter Bronson Arroyo, helping lift the Reds to a 9-3 victory over the Rockies before 27,915 fans Sunday afternoon at Great American Ball Park. The win ended Cincinnati's four-game losing streak.

At this point all you can do is pick storylines to follow and hope it can entertain you.

Hamilton, EE, Salmon, Cooter, Belisle maybe Bray and Homer. Prospects down on the farm, whatever it takes to get me through till September. This team is going nowhere in '07.

Well I guess I'm officially captaining the Josh Hamilton band wagon now. I picked up 5 of his rookie cards this week, thats all I could find, and I got my #33 jersey in the mail yesterday. The jersey is sweet. I recommend anyone who hasnt gotten a new jersey yet to get one. They are very comfortable and very nice looking.

I actually missed yesterdays game but I figured with Harang throwing we'd pull that one out. I guess not.:(

Once again today though we got Bronson some good run support and he does his stuff to win. We stop the streak just in time to see Oswalt tomorrow. Oh joy!:!

Yep probably not going to be watching much of tonights game...Oswalt is just going to mow us down once again...

I wonder if Narron is going to bat Griffey 1, Ross 2 and Lohse 3rd tonight...Seems like a good lineup for Narron to throw out there...
