Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Been away again, let me try and catch up.

.02:

-Hamilton will take the job from Freel, not even a question anymore. What a story. We should all reflect for a moment on the ungodly amount of raw talent it would take to do what Hamilton is doing right now. His pure physical talent is Mantle-esque and I do not think thats over hype.

-Kudos to numbnuts for the EE situation. Let Kruk and other morons talk but we all know in every workplace there is a double standard for star producers and the rest of the crew. You don't embarrass a vet like JR or Dunn like that but you damn sure get a kids attention. His forte is clubhouse management and this is another great example. Now just let someone else fill out the lineup cards and tell him when to pull a pitcher.

-Jr is too hard to trade...10/5 rights, contract, where he's at in his career and all. Milton and Cormier have no value. Hatnine is our only real chip and that all stil depends on Votto. Bray and EG return could make some other pen parts expendable. Get stormy enough saves and someone might overpay.

-Ross is in a serious funk but his upside isn'tt going to be '06 Ross even when he gets over it. All in all remember SS and C, offense is a bonus. Just bring the leather and manage the staff. I have no complaints on those 2 fronts and would rather wear gasoline drawers in hell than have LaRue back.

-Speaking of SS, hope all is well with Gonzo and his familia. He won't finish within 40 points of .300 but its fun while it lasts.

-Nix the Dunn to 1B talk please. You can't block a kid as close to be ready as Votto with your soon to be in his prime star offensive player unless you plan on trading one of them. Note to Wayne, if you do you trade one of them, you goddamn well better get more than 2 average-at-best middle relievers or I'm coming up there.

- 6 out of the first 10, can't complain.

-Is there anything more fun than beating the Cubs while sitting back and watching the meltdown contest between Pinella and Zambrano?

Fire Narron now. I don't care how good he is in the clubhouse. They intentionally walked PH Daryl Flipping Ward to get to Soriono with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd. I don't care if Ward is a lefty and Soriono a righty. It's Daryl Ward, you already have 2 outs! And of course he gets an infiled single to extend it. :smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash::smash:

Thanks for noticing. That is quite possibly the dumbest decision I have ever seen. If you want the "proper" match up, you bring in the lefty to face Ward. You don't let a weapon like Soriano beat you, make the PH beat you!

What the fuck is Wuertz throwing? Sunflower seeds? Make some contact ya dopes!

I'll go on record saying the Reds will lose this game.

You dumbass.

Not to pick on you, but I think you just took one on the chin. And this one belongs to the Reds.

I sure did. I'm happy to look like an idiot in this case.

This team, as in previous years, completely befuddles me.
-1 runner in the first 13 batters.
-9 batters in row get on base.
-1 runner in the final 16 batters.
I just don't get it.

Only thing that comes to mind is Kerry Wood getting ejected in the 9th for crying about the strike zone while the Reds comeback to beat them at Wrigley (as happened a couple years ago).

Can Arroyo get some run support?

I think he has gotten like .5 runs a game...

He has pitched great, even tho it seems that he can only give 6 strong and then struggles to get thru the 7th...

Remember he was just a swingman before he got here..Boston's Sarloos. The strides that guy has made are amazing but he still isn't an ace, he's going to give up 3-4 runs per 7.

With the offense we used to have all I ever cared about was a quality start from a SP. Unless EE gets it going and Hamilton has a monster year this offense is going to struggle and a QS might not be enough everytime.

WK built a team for '07 that depended on several career years being repeated and I know I'm not the only one who saw that with alarms going off in my head.

Ross, Hatte and Phillips are struggeling big time and its likely not just a collection of slumps, its called regression to career norms. Add Gonzales to the list of offensive dreck(when he comes back and remembers who he is) and you have 4 of your starting 8 being poor offensive players. Not a recipie for scoring a lot of runs.

The scary part is I keep thinking wait untill the pitching falls apart to go with it. I see a lot of games like yesterday on the horizon.

Some stats through 11 games

Reds Team NL rank (out of 16)

Runs scored: 10th
OBP: 5th (.332)
SLG: 11th (.336)
BB: 2nd

Runs Allowed:8th
Hits Allowed:5th (1 is worst)
OBA: 4th (1 is best)

The pitching staff has allowed 97 hits in 98.2 IP. Thats not real good but they have compensated by being ultra stingy with the BB (27 which is tied for 3rd best in the NL). They must continue that discipline all season because they are very hittable. If they start walking guys to go with that kind of hit rate it will get ugly.

Offensively we are obviously struggling but by doing the exact opposite of the pitching staff we are surviving. We are taking a ton of BB and doing a great job of not making an out in general(OBP). What we are lousy at right now is doing some damage when we get a hit(SLG). OBP is far more important but we need to get one bopper going (EE) and one some AB's (Hamilton).

All in all, I know its a work in progress but WK has managed to make a team thats just going to get to .500 in a more traditional manner than we have seen the past few years. Middle of the pack Runs scored and Runs Allowed vs #1 Runs scored and #16 Runs Allowed.

Insightful. Thanks for the legwork on the stats. Very useful information to have. Greenies for you!
