Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Over a career though? You cant judge a guy like that based on salary over his final years in baseball. Even though he was getting older and a bit injury prone, he still came up in the clutch more often than not and absolutely could do the little things to help a ball club win. I hope he ends up back here in Cincy where he belongs sooner than later.

Yeah, I should have qualified that he earned that contract, but the Reds couldn't afford to tie up more than half of their payroll in two players. Larkin remains one of my all-time favorites. I was at the game when he got his first hit. I've met him a few times and he was a great guy as well. I was just cranky today.

I was thinking earlier today about Thom ripping into Gonzalez last night over failing to get down the bunt, explaining that Narron -- who Thom acknowledged is taking heat in Cincinnati -- shouldn't get heat for Gonzalez being unable to bunt and working himself into an 0-2 count.

Well ... when Miley was shown the door, weren't we promised that Narron would come in, and above all else, teach these guys the fundamentals?

Man if we oculd possibly keep Freel and Hamilton in the lineup everyday no one is going to run on Hamilton and they can cover the whole outfield...

ONe thing I have noticed, not sure if it is due to the new hitting coach or what, but the lefties really seem to be using the whole field...I have seen Dunn and Griffey hit more balls to left field already this year than they have all year...

2 years ago that hit in the first that Dunn had would of been a fluke, but now he is doing that more often...If he contines that will make him a very difficult out as they will not be able to put the shift on him like they do...

Weird that Castro came in for EE...I wonder if Narron is pissed about EE not running that pop up out...

I get the feeling that it will become increasingly difficult to keep him out of the lineup.
I have already seen enough to want him to take center over Freel. Look, I love Ryan Freel. I love his passion and his ethic. He's a mini-Pete Rose. The problem with Freel though, as the saying goes, is you can't steal first base. Freel's M.O. is that he goes into extended slumps, such as right now, and it positively kills this team. Hamilton has shown me enough in what ... ? five or six at bats? that he needs to get an opportunity in this lineup.

What about moving Phillips back to SS and putting Freel at 2B?

I think that he could back to his utility role...He could give Phillips, EE, Gonzalez, Dunn, Hamilton, or Griffey the day off...

He could be in the lineup 2/6 days or 3/6 days a week...The only thing is we don't have anyone that represents a leadoff man besides Freel...

His first at bat tonight was a good one when he drew the walk...I would like to see Freel try and lay a bunt or two down and see if he can't break out of his slump...

Not going to happen with A Gon on the team. I was hoping they would make that decision in the offseason and plug Deno in center.

On another note, I don't know if making an example of EE was the right move at the moment. He's been struggling at the plate since the season started and I don't think Narron needs to be fucking with his confidence. He got mixed up, it wasn't a lack of hustle or effort.

Agree and agree.

It won't happen with Gonzalez on this team. That's part of my problem, though. You know, I could somewhat laugh off a .500 season if the team showed progress. I could deal with the Reds being lovable losers if they were my lovable losers. But they're not. For the past four years the roster has been littered with hired guns that have come in for a half season or two, and the team is still up and down. Keep Aurilia or don't bother. Keep Randa or don't bother. Keep Hatteberg and Conine or don't bother. My lineup card is nothing but chicken scratches at this point, and I don't remember who was on this team two years ago -- and that's coming from someone who watches about 100 games a season, attends when I can despite the 130 mile drive from Lancaster, and checks the box scores every day.

As for EE, benching EE at this point is questionable. He's visibly stewing about it in the dugout right now. Kudos to Narron for abruptly growing a pair, regardless. It's a season too late though. This ship has no rudder.

Benching Encarnacion is stupid, and it may have just cost the Reds a tying run. Our cleanup hitter tonight is Juan Castro. At the very least he should have moved Freel to third and put Griffey in the game if he wanted to make a statement to EE. This team isn't good enough to punt a game over largely inconsequential "hustle" bullshit.

I never thought I'd say this but THANK YOU JERRY NARRON for taking Ross out of the game and putting in Javy. Great move. Ross has looked awful at the plate.

I agree this was a great move by Narron...

Not sure what is up with Ross but just looks lost at the plate...

Still missing chances...I just hope that doesnt come back to bite us like it has all series...

Either way another great outing for Belisle...

12ip and only 2er...
