Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Thom is just ripping into this Reds team this series.

Like father like son.

I've listened to Thom at various points in his career and this is pretty atypical for him. He is generally a positive guy. The Reds have not executed the fundamentals well the past 2 nights and he will call them on it.

Can someone explain to me the reason for all these pitching changes...I have seen so many bullpen changes in the first week of the season that I think I might go crazy...It seems like each guy throws 1 batter and that is it...

Plz someone explain the strategy to me...I realize it doesn't hurt us, but I have to think that the righties in the pen can get out lefties and lefties can get out righties...I also understand that we have a pretty deep pen, but right now I would rather seen Coffey go out there and pitch a whole inning or Stanton throw a whole inning, but what I don't want to see is later in the season we have guys have thrown 3 days in a row and need the day off so say for instance tonight Santos couldnt throw, that would leave us with Sarloos now until he gets PH for and then you have Weathers and Count. Now you always want to hold back one pitcher, and I would have to think that guy would be Weathers since they would wait for him to be the closer...So you have to go with a guy like Count when if you would of thrown Coffey a full inning you would still have Sarloos to throw instead of a guy you might not be confident in going about 3 or 4 innings if the game kept going...Not sure if this makes since or not...

A perfect example of what irritates me when listening to Welsh. After Gonzalez fails to lay down the bunt, he claims "you can't manage around that." I beg to differ. While there is no excuse for Gonzalez failing to move the runner over, why didn't they bring Freel in to pinch run for Hatteburg. Its fairly late in the game and he's batting 1 spot behind back to back lefties. Chances of them bringing in their lefty specialist is high and they'd keep him in to face Hatteburg if he gets through Dunn and Griffey, risking Encarnacion. Freel's value isn't in his bat, its in his legs and his ability to exert pressure on opposing batteries. Bring him in and risk him getting caught stealing. Think about it. Gonzo is going to show bunt anyway. Its hard to throw someone out when the batter swings or is bunting. If he steals second, a bunt or a ground ball or even a fly to a reasonably deep outfield positon puts a runner on third with less than 2 outs instead of a runner on second with 1 out and the 8 and 9 batters coming up. If he gets caught, you have Gonzalez and Valentin swinging for the fences which they are going to do regardless. If he's safe, they actually may have a chance to score the run with a sac fly or a grounder to the right side, Valentin is a lefty by the way. It seems to me that some coaching could have been beneficial in that situation. But that's just me. What do I know.

Nice quick inning from Stormy. This one could go on a while. Can we settle it with a Mark Grace - David Ross rematch?

I'd take Grace and the D backs PBP guy over Grande and the crappy left hander any day of the week.
