Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

No small ball from this team...Doesnt do it last night when he should of with Hatte at the dish and tonite he tries to get EE to do it who has no career sac bunts...Then he pops up...:(

Christ this is awful. Thom is barking up the wrong tree with having the bunt on/off for EE. It's obvious to me that after he popped his one bunt attempt straight back, they realized he had no chance of laying down a bunt and decided to let him hack. Unfortunately, there are just too many players now that suck at bunting.

I just keep telling myself it is a long season, it is early and we have played pretty well, and I like the things we have done from a pitching and defense standpoint and just hope that we can get the offense to come thru with some runs when we need them...

Hasnt happened the last two nites when we needed them...:(

We gotta win tonight. Getting swept on our first road trip would not be a great start to the season. Hopefully Belisle tosses another great game and our bats get going.

Also congrats to Josh Hamilton..Great game last night..It actually bought a tear to my eye last night..Hopefully he gets the start tonight again..He deserves it.

Can someone explain to me the reason for all these pitching changes...I have seen so many bullpen changes in the first week of the season that I think I might go crazy...It seems like each guy throws 1 batter and that is it...

Plz someone explain the strategy to me...I realize it doesn't hurt us, but I have to think that the righties in the pen can get out lefties and lefties can get out righties...I also understand that we have a pretty deep pen, but right now I would rather seen Coffey go out there and pitch a whole inning or Stanton throw a whole inning, but what I don't want to see is later in the season we have guys have thrown 3 days in a row and need the day off so say for instance tonight Santos couldnt throw, that would leave us with Sarloos now until he gets PH for and then you have Weathers and Count. Now you always want to hold back one pitcher, and I would have to think that guy would be Weathers since they would wait for him to be the closer...So you have to go with a guy like Count when if you would of thrown Coffey a full inning you would still have Sarloos to throw instead of a guy you might not be confident in going about 3 or 4 innings if the game kept going...Not sure if this makes since or not...

That (well, not exactly that...something like that) is what jumped out at me in the box score this morning. Narron uses 4 pitchers to get through the 8th and 9th, but then sends Weathers out in the eleventh for a second inning. These guys ought to be able to pitch one good inning, regardless of whether they are facing lefties or righties. I'd rather see Stanton facing a rightie versus Weatehrs pithcing a second inning.

It's pretty standard practice to shuffle guys to get R/L matchups. Lefties bat a full .60 points higher against Coffey, so they brought in Stanton. Narron was playing for the win. It does you no good to end up with a full bullpen. They still had Santos and Count available. Actually, I was most surprised that Santos did not take over for Stormy after his first inning. With his starting experience I would have left him in until he won or lost.

BTW, did anybody else think that last ball was catchable? I couldn't tell. Thom and Chris said it hit half way up the wall, but to me it looked like Hamilton was there but didn't even see it. Even on the replay I couldn't tell for sure.

Well, the first two games I get to watch this year I wish I wouldn't have. We play more and more like an American League team everyday. When was the last time we fielded a team that could pinch hit, move the runner over, sacrifice or bunt? 1999? 2000? God I miss Larkin! The starting pitching has been everything we could ask for to this point and we pretty much knew the offense was going to struggle at times unless Dunn is crushing the ball. What we cant plan for is which particular fuckup Narron decides to use on a given night. That horse is ashes by now with all the beating but why cant the front office see any of these things. Do they just have meetings in the mornings to find out the results of the games or are they actually watching this debacle? Are the front office guys afraid to let Narron go or are they just that stupid?

I guess the only thing we can do is hope somehow we avoid any injuries and win a few games along the way.

Please tell me they have hired Rod Carew to give these num-nums a clinic. I SUCKED at baseball as a kid, but I could still bunt. Larkin was hurt most of his last three years and very much overpaid. He was a great player, but his salary for those years is one of the many reasons the Reds are in the spot they are in now.

I think it was too high up on the wall to be catchable. I don't think even Torii Hunter would've got a glove on that one.

Over a career though? You cant judge a guy like that based on salary over his final years in baseball. Even though he was getting older and a bit injury prone, he still came up in the clutch more often than not and absolutely could do the little things to help a ball club win. I hope he ends up back here in Cincy where he belongs sooner than later.
