Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Look at how the bullpen has performed. Aside from McBeth, whom I think has just about had it, they've all pitched pretty well. I guess they can perform when put in a position to succeed.

Moeller DFA'd is also another good sign. Javy is going to get a little more playing time to keep him sharp. Another good sign. If only this changed happened a month ago we might be closer to 5 games within .500. Lets see what happens in the next two weeks.

I hate to say it, but I will...The season is over, I want us to lose enough games to have the worst record in baseball...

Even if this guys turns us around and we have a .500 or so record the rest of the season I don't want there to be any question that we need a new guy in here...Not someone that was an interm manager...We already went that path twice with Miley and Narron and that got us no where...

We get the first draft pick next year and get a top arm for Dunn or Griff and add some other solid prospects from the other guys, and bring in a big time manager, and I think we turn around much like the Dbacks and Padres did from a couple years ago when they were in the same boat...

I also think a big time manager will help change the attitude a lil...It seems like some of the people around the team are startign to accept losing a lil too much...

found this on redszone.

Scouts say the Reds are alerting other clubs that everybody on their roster is available except Aaron Harang, Homer Bailey, Josh Hamilton, Alex Gonzalez and Brandon Phillips.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, there are rumors that Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Tony La Russa could end up in Cincinnati as a package deal. Reds owner Bob Castellini used to be part of the Cardinals ownership group.

Just heard the same rumor while watching the game on FSN. Wow. What a turn of events that would be. From Narron to Larussa?!?!?

There are definitely going to be some guys moving at the break also. I hate to see Jr. go knowing he's going to get to 600 this season. I'd like to see him do it as a Red.

Gotta like the aggressiveness the interim guy's got going right now. Hit and run, sacrifice, tagging up on plays not guaranteed to make it easy. I like it. It seems to be contagious too. Lohse pitched very well today. Lets see if we can make it two series in a row.

I really think a lot of our problem was the attitude in the clubhouse...Narron was too much of a friendly guy, which is one reason why I think he held on to his job so long, and they were starting to accept losing...I still don't think we have the talent to contend or anything, but I don't think we were near as bad as our record under Narron...

Also up for debate IMO is why Harang never gets any credit for what he does year in and year out...I mean he didnt get a single vote for cy young last year and now this year doesnt even sniff the all star game...

OUT: Castro (DL), McBeth (AAA) & Stone (DFA)

IN: Burton, Keppinger & Saarloos

Glad to see Castro won't be playing for a while, and I'm also glad Stone is gone.

Sarloos has been getting beat like a rented mule in AAA not sure why the fuck we need him back.

Castro gone is sweet sweet music.

Hamilton left the game with a sprained right wrist. Edwin comes into the game in his spot, and drives one over the left field wall. Is this what you might call "beginner's luck" for old Pete? I suppose we are going to get all the breaks the rest of the way..... :tongue2:

EDIT: Obviously not....Coffey serves up 3-run shot to Byrnes to tie the game in what inning? The 8th of course... Try walking to the mound once you @#$%^ tool....

Beautiful job of producing a run by Brandon Phillips! He tagged from first on a fly out to center by Dunn, and took second. Hopper then drove him in for the go ahead run with 2 outs in the 8th, and off we go to the 9th.... with a 5-4 lead, looking to take our second straight series....this would be a great time to hold your breath, everyone.... it might get Stormy

EDIT: "...and this one belongs to the Reds!" Holy shit, what the hell is that? Is that...nah, it couldn't be... is that a 3 game winning streak? Damn, I forgot what one of those looked like! Lookin' to get the brooms out tomorrow!!

Reds call up Saarloos, add Burton off DL

Sunday, July 8, 2007 3:58 AM
Associated Press

The Cincinnati Reds overhauled their work-in-progress bullpen with four more moves yesterday.
Right-hander Kirk Saarloos was called up from triple-A Louisville and right-hander Jared Burton was reinstated from the disabled list.
Rookie right-hander Marcus McBeth was optioned to Louisville and right-hander Ricky Stone, 32, was designated for assignment, ending their rocky stays in a bullpen that has used 13 relievers in all this season, four of them rookies.

Continued....

Ah, ever since they DFA'd Santos, they've needed someone who can throw long relief. I still think they are in the evaluation phase following Narron's departure and you'll see the Lousiville shuttle revved up for awhile while they bring guys back and forth to get a look. Sarloos is probably one of the guys they are deciding whether to fish or cut bait with (like Stone/Santos). Also McBeth and Salmon both need to work on some things. Although Salmon has been relatively effective, I think it's good for them both to go back down and work on putting it all together. Both have the stuff to be late inning guys, but need to work on location and how to pitch rather than throw.

Now that it doesn't matter they'll go and fuck up the #1 pick.

Reds fans just can't win.

If this were football or basketball, I'd be right with you. Baseball draft is too much of a crap shoot and the #1 pick is so costly, I'll be happy as long as they land in the top 10. A little win streak before the break is nice, with a tougher schedule ahead, I can't see them having a big second half and should easily finish with at top 5 pick.

On another note, very effective outing by Bailey and good to see Mackanin get him out while he was still throwing well. If he had hit any bumps in the 6th, he would have thrown in excess of 100 pitches, so good job of keeping him well under that. He had better command and was effectively using the hook. Saw him mix in a few change ups, and another pitch (slider/cutter?). I also noticed that he was throwing his fastball high in the zone. Seems like he had been trying to keep everything down in the past few starts. His FB seems to be way more effective when he gets it up. He only topped 94 on the gun a couple of times, but his 94 looks more like 97. By far the best I've seen him pitch since he has been up. This was the first time I was really impressed. He still throws too many pitches that miss by a mile and have no purpose, but he seems to be learning. Perhaps more importantly, It's clear that they are now looking at his starts from a purely developmental standpoint.

I still think all of this is why Narron got canned. WK wanted to start evaluating players and treating Baily's starts developmentally. I think they want to see what they have before they start pulling the trigger on deals. I believe Narron still thought they were a bullpen arm or two away from being a competitive team. I don't think Narron was willing to go into rebuild mode with Wayne. The next month will be very telling as to which direction this team is going. (Fire sale vs. cosmetic changes)

Very good point IMO. In fact, in our division, I think we're close to having the talent to contend.! It's just nice to be winning again, at least a little. I'm going to have to listen this afternoon, I'm sure Marty will be trying to sell off the whole team.....
