Here's a ray of hope:

Mackanin is NOT a former catcher! :banger:

Neither was Ray Knight, but at least he doesn't look like Enos from the Dukes of Hazzard.

Mackanin was really well spoken at his press conference today, it was a nice thing to see.

He made the point that he will manage to the teams strengths, something Narron did not do. Narron always wanted to play small ball, be fundamental, play the game the right way, yadayadayada. It sounded like Mac will play to the team strengths, which is power. When he gets guys that can run (Phillips, Freel, Hopper) he will, but he's not going to make guys do what they aren't comfortable doing.

I like what he said in the press conference, but I don't like his first lineup.

Just got back from the ballpark.

The booing/cheering for Bonds was stupid. They booed him whenever he was introduced, but cheered his home run and actually booed LOUDER when the Reds decided to walk him.

I didn't really care about Bonds. Lord knows it's not the first time he's homered in Cincinnati (I've been at the park for more than my share of those), and it's also not as if he's never been booed before. Why isn't it enough to just go and root for your team?

You know what I booed for? I booed David Ross when he swung at a 2-0 pitch after 4 of the last 5 batters had been walked by Zito. I also booed the Lemon Chill vendors after waiting for 5 innings for one to come by my section. Me and my girlfriend went out on the concourse and halfway around the stadium to buy one, only to have THREE of them come by within an inning of returning to my seat. Somebody get Jerry Narron a bag full of Lemon Chills and put his ass back to work!

Absolutely what I was thinking as I watched it today. The guy has a good grasp on talent, you can tell by what he says. His desire to win is also first and foremost. I think if the guy ends up .500 the rest of the year he has a good shot at coming back next season. They are also very clear that they will be looking everywhere for a new permanent manager next season. His best point in my opinion is managing 8 years winter ball in the Dominican. Hopefully he has great ties down there and we can find a diamond or two hiding in the rough.

As far as the lineup today though I have no problems with it. Getting Freel back out there is probably twofold. They have to be checking him physically both to see if he can play anymore this season and if he can will they be able to trade someone else at the deadline without completely wrecking the roster. Also, with Zito throwing today Hatteberg and Hamilton out of the lineup. Maybe I'd take Dunn out, which he did later with Hopper. You cant take Griff out period lately with the way he's playing unless he is scheduled. Overall he got a win today with, I cant believe I'm saying this, timely hitting! I like the way the bullpen came in today also. He stayed with Harang only through 6 and 109 pitches where JN might have brought him back out. Lets see how he does the rest of the week before I will try and gauge his style.

Nice 1st win for Pete Mack. I am interested to see how he does. Seems like a decent guy and says the right things. But, didn't quite a few people (not me) say that about Narron.

A lot did. Hell, all you can do is hand the guy some rope and see if he hangs himself like Marron (read Moron), or if he pulls the truck out of the ditch. We will be watching to see how it plays out....

Well, it seems inevitable that this team does "better." I can't see how they can do much worse. I just remember Narron driving me nuts from day 1 with the way he managed the game and especially the pitching staff. Pete Mack seems like he won't pull as many head scratchers. I'm interested to see how he handles certain things like how often he starts Freel and how he handles things if a big trade is actually made. I already like the fact that he stuck Coffey out there late in the game. I thought it was right of Narron to give the rooks a shot, but they failed miserably. At least Coffey has experience and a short memory, he'll get the job done at least half of the time (and that's better than none).
