Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

One more positive note:

Don't look now but Dunn has the .avg up to .272. His OPS, I know a very popular stat these days, is 100 points over his career in the .930 range.

Livingston, Dumatrait, Votto and Bruce are almost here!

One of my worst fears is that we trade Dunn to a team that can actually use him against us. The guy is barely a year older than I, and he has yet to figure out most of what he will eventually figure out. I understand his competence will Shirley come with a Free Agent paycheck that would also eventually weed out the Reds, but please let him go the A.L. route. For some reason, since this plan of action would seem to make the most sense, I can see the Reds forcing a trade before the deadline to an N.L. club, who will then laugh in our faces for the next 6-8 years.

I just see him as a "sell high" right now, and the more I think about it, the more I just wish I was high. :tongue2:

My observation is that the Reds continue to "try" to hit homers rather than attempting to string together hits and walks to create rallys. I'm not one of those idiots who think HRs kill rallys, but I'm a firm believer in hitting the ball where it is pitched rather than taking the same big hack and going for the long ball all the time.
...
Bottom line: this team has no confidence. They don't believe in each other. Every guy feels he has to do it himself. "Nobody is going to drive me in, so I have to hit a homer." "If I give up runs, nobody is going to score, so I have to throw a shut out." Teams that think like that play tight and are prone to mistakes. This team doesn't pick each other up or score "insurance" runs to put games away. Instead they let them slip away.

I had to laugh last night when they were stringing together walks and hits in the 7th to take the lead. Then they picked Harang/Cout/McBeth by getting the lead back and Dunn provides insurance. Amazing. I think they did it to spite me. :paranoid: Seriously, that was a great win, but I think Jax is correct that this is a mentally weak team. That's why after scoring 9 last night, I won't be a bit surprised if they only score 1 or 2 tonight because they are taking big hacks at pitches out of the zone. And even if they do take a lead into the 8th, somebody will probably walk the winning run onto base and serve up a big fat meatball for someone to mash. Such is the way with this team.

Reds weather storm
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

PHILADELPHIA ? David Weathers spent a 42-minute rain delay Wednesday night strategizing with fellow reliever Eddie Guardado on the Reds? bench.
Weathers was on the Citizens Bank Park mound trying to protect a one-run lead against the Phillies in the bottom of the eighth inning when heavy rain and lightning halted play with two outs and Philadelphia left fielder Greg Dobbs standing on third base as the potential tying run. Dobbs reached base by tripling off the top of the right field wall.
?Being a veteran guy, you just know how to handle those situations,? Weathers said.
?You keep your thoughts right and not get in (the clubhouse) and start watching TV and thinking about things other than what matters ? and that?s the game.?
Weathers returned to the mound when play resumed and recorded the final four outs to preserve a 9-6 victory by the Reds before 31,803 fans. The save was his 15th this season and the eighth that lasted more than an inning.

PHILADELPHIA - To keep Bronson Arroyo on regular rest, the Reds have adjusted their upcoming probable starters.
Arroyo will start Friday against the Cardinals at Great American Ball Park and Kyle Lohse, who had been listed as Friday's starter, will move back a day and start Saturday's game.
"I just throw when I'm told," Lohse said.

Yeah, Dunn's playing like he wants to get out of town in the next month.

Yet another series loss
Belisle struggles, allows 6 runs in 5 innings
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

PHILADELPHIA - The Reds were in an all too familiar spot Thursday.
A victory at Citizens Bank Park would ensure a winning series at the tail end of an oddly routed road trip that also included three-game stops in Oakland and Seattle.
"It seems like every series we can win a series if we win the last day and we just haven't been able to do it," Reds manager Jerry Narron said hours before the third and final game against the Phillies. "The other day in Seattle we had a shot at it. In Oakland we had a shot at it."
The Reds had numerous chances to get the elusive series-clinching road win Thursday, but an RBI single by Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins in the 10th inning handed Cincinnati an 8-7 loss and a 3-6 road trip. The Reds haven't experienced a winning road trip since June 19-26 last season.

Just ducky on pond; Gonzalez has knack for coming through with bases loaded
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

PHILADELPHIA - Alex Gonzalez got some practice batting with the bases loaded during the last legs of the Reds' road trip.
The shortstop faced the situation three times before Thursday's series finale against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park and twice came through with run-scoring doubles.
"It seems like his best at-bats are with guys on base," manager Jerry Narron said after Wednesday's win.

Another day, another blown lead in the 8th. Actually, McBeth had some bad luck and it parlayed into a loss. It would be nice to see them pull one out of their ass once in awhile. 1-43 when trailing after 8. Pitiful. At least Bronson was chucking the ball well tonight.

Just got home from the game. Arroyo pitched well all in all, but it seems all the Reds pitchers (him included) failed to pitch aggressively to the hitters at the bottom of the order. They pretty much have 3-4 automatic outs in a row, but pretty much any hitter except Juan Castro is much better when they're ahead in the count an can hone in on a fastball.

Hamilton's HR was impressive. That thing was a HARD line drive that still made it to the top third of the moon deck. If that ball had some air under it... Wow.

The Reds ran into a lot of tough luck tonight. There were several frozen ropes that went right to a Cardinals fielder, and two long flyballs to the wall that just didn't carry out tonight. Plus, there were several flares down that left field line hit by the Cards that just seemed to slowly but surely find a green spot then tail over to the wall. Not much you can do about those.

St. Louis' Scott Rolen is safe at home in the second inning as Reds catcher David Ross takes a late throw.

CINCINNATI -- A certain curiosity apparently remains alive if not exactly kicking in the land of Reds' fans.

Most of the 35,508 on hand last night in Great American Ball Park stood in the middle of the seventh inning and delivered a heartfelt rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game. (OK, quite a few in the crowd had come to see the St. Louis Cardinals or the postgame fireworks.)
Even so, the night was pleasant. The baseball played by the Reds and Cardinals was good enough to hold everyone's attention, which is a neat trick when the home team is buried in last place and 20 games under .500 a week into the summer.

Santos no longer has spring in his step
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

Victor Santos was a spring training phenomenon.

He came to camp in shape and throwing the ball well. He kept getting people out. He went from a no shot to long shot to making the Opening Day roster. But, as the season wore on, Santos pitched a lot like the guy who went 5-9 with a 5.70 ERA for Pittsburgh last year.
Santos, a 30-year-old right-hander, was designated for assignment Friday to make room on the roster for Ricky Stone. At the time of the move, Santos was 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA.

Great outing by Lohse tonight. Hatteberg is quietly back to .300 and Hamilton continues his hitting streak. Ross is still hitting for power and playing some excellent defense behind the plate. If we only had a bullpen.:(

Narron fired as Reds manager after loss to Cardinals

CINCINNATI -- Manager Jerry Narron was fired Sunday night by the Cincinnati Reds, who raised their payroll and their expectations in the offseason only to find themselves with the worst record in the major leagues.

The Reds became the second team to change managers Sunday. Earlier in the day, Seattle's Mike Hargrove resigned.

Narron was the second big league manager to be fired this season. Baltimore's Sam Perlozzo lost his job on June 18 after the last-place Orioles couldn't shake another losing streak.

The Reds have been far worse, setting a pace for their first 100-loss season since 1982. With no improvement in sight and attendance starting to lag, the club decided to dump its low-key manager.

The move came a few hours after an 11-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals that left the Reds at 31-51, the worst record in the majors.
