Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Majewski sucks too. I don't know how he pitched before the injury but he's not good now. We need a run here in the 10th. I cant stand to see everyone in this freaking bullpen pitch today, or any other for that matter.

Yeah....

But the Reds have hung with one of the best teams in the MLB this weekend.

It's something to build on I would think.

The way they were playing 2 weeks ago they get swept right out of their own building.

I think you just proved my point.

Making CONTACT is the key.

Striking out nearly (or over) 200 times isn't doing that.

Dunn isn't worth the $10.5 Million he's getting this year.

Contact does not equal fewer outs.

OBP is OBP, it simply measures how many times you do not make an out.

The fewer times you make an out the better.

You guys will never win this argument with Jax...

There is too many state out there that show Dunn producting and being our best run producer year in and year out...

Guys that put up the numbers that Dunn does don't grow on trees...

Batting avg. is just as overrated a stat as ERA...

I posted this over at RedsZone, but I think it fits here too.

I watched a program on one of the Discovery channels this weekend about Sabermetrics. It was full of interviews with Bill James. Anyways, one of the big flaws James pointed out in his own formulas is that he cannot account for defense in any reliable way. I watch most of the Reds games and I find myself at least twice a week muttering at Dunn for not getting to a ball or playing a single into a double or something similar. They aren't scored as errors, so they don't show up in the boxscore. The program showed a company that is plotting every defensive play now and looking to find ways to better quantify defense. I think it could add a whole knew dimension to debates such as this.

I don't think Hopper is the answer and I wouldn't start him over Dunn on any regular basis. He could be a decent stop gap is Dunn is traded. Personally, I'd like to see Dunn moved for a CF with A+ defense, speed, and a high OBP to bat leadoff and move Hambone to left. I think that would improve this team quite a bit. On that same program, they did a demonstration of how in 2005 Johnny Damon was more valuable than Andrew Jones (that was his 51 HR year). I think the right player could have this kind of effect on the Reds. I also think that Votto looks to be the bat to replace Dunn in the lineup, but at 1B rather than LF. Hard to find that Johnny Damon type player though.

RZ is the place to have some serious Saber conversations.

I know for me personally I got into it a few years ago(very modestly compared to the true acolytes) and it greatly enhanced my enjoyment of baseball. I would encourage anyone to look into it, keep an open mind and you'll be amazed at how much stuff you thought you knew about baseball was just flat wrong. Word of caution, your relationship with Marty(and a lot of old school types) will never be the same. :)

To the point you made about defense thats still one of the great unknowns, an accurate and reliable way to count a palyers defense into his overall production. They'll never be able to take out the human subjectivity regarding if a guy "should" have gotten to a ball or not imo.

I have no illusions as to how bad Dunn is in LF but we get a double dose in RF because JR has become an absolute statue. He's no better in RF than Dunn is in LF, he's just more graceful running after the ball he couldn't get to while it was still in the air. Add in the supposed great defensive SS we picked up booting it all over the place and this is still not a MLB caliber defense to me.

I disagree on Hamilton. I think he's as good a defensive CF as your going to get and having his bat in CF still gives you a chance to get 2 more thumpers in RF and LF. Again, no way to know for sure so its all opinion but that's mine.

Sab..er...something rather, aside :tongue2:, without that throw from Hamilton last night, the Reds don't win that game. Meaning CF is a great spot for him. But don't let me argue with your metrics :wink2:.

I wouldnt mind a leadoff type guy playing somewhere in the outfield when/if we ship Dunn or Griffey...

Hopper/Freel fit the bill now, and I wouldnt mind maybe a year or so with them until we can produce one out of the farm system or get one...

I think Votto can be a solid #2 hitter, and Hamilton can be a #3 hitter if we get rid of Griffey...EE in the 4 hole, and Phillips is a 6 hitter all the way, Then Dunn or Hamilton depending on who we get rid of man the 5 hole until of course Jay Bruce gets up here...

It is the bottom of the lineup with the 7 and 8 hole that are killing us now...
