Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Too bad we couldn't keep Griff and get rid of Dunn for some quality relief. I guess we are going to lose all the players that are actually contributing before we shitcan the free loaders.
Agreed. I'd love it if they got rid of Dunn he isn't very good IMO. At the very least just put him at first base where he belongs because he is not an outfielder.

I was probably a little harsh on Adam earlier. He has seemed to disappear for the past couple weeks. In his defense though, he was tearing it up earlier in the year just to watch the bullpen give up games night in and night out. That type of thing plays on a guys Psyche regardless of how good a professional they are. At this point he's reverted back to "in the river, Adam" as I like to call him. He tries to hit every pitch into the damn river instead of just making contact and letting his God given size and strength do the rest. Confidence in the team around you is a must. Jr. is too laid back to let it bother him, that and he's finally healthy.

Adam needs to regain his focus somehow. If the FO would go ahead and fire Narron and put WK on the shortest leash possible that would be a good direction to go in. Then I would bring in a team of sports psychologists to try and help them forget about the first two months of this season. The last thing that management can do is look as if they've packed it in for the season. As fans alot of us have already done that. Fans doing it is one thing, management doing it is another.

Reds fan Danny Sanet shows his support for pitcher Homer Bailey, who made his major-league debut.

CINCINNATI -- The kid emerged from the dugout tunnel yesterday afternoon in Great American Ball Park and ran through an unexpected gauntlet of photographers with his head down like a seasoned veteran on his way to just another batting practice.

If Homer Bailey hadn't already felt the heavy expectations of Reds fans pressed on his shoulders, the early media attention and the standing ovations he received later during his major-league debut against the Cleveland Indians drove home the point.

Freel sets no timetable for his return

Ryan Freel

CINCINNATI -- Reds center fielder Ryan Freel said yesterday that he still feels the effects of the outfield collision he had with teammate Norris Hopper on Memorial Day.

He is not close to resuming baseball activities.
"I'm still getting some pretty good little headaches and some dizzy spells," Freel said. "I don't (know) where I stand right now as far as getting back. I don't know when it's going to happen. I haven't picked up a baseball. I haven't picked up a bat."
Hopper hit Freel with his right elbow after the two crossed while chasing a fly ball off the bat of Pittsburgh's Humberto Cota.

Homer's outing was what I expected/hoped for. I predicted 5 innings and 2/3 runs. Should have only been 1 run. Great composure. He didn't get rattled when he got in jams. Very impressive for a pitcher making his debut. If he starts getting ahead in counts, look out. 114 pitches was a little high (he's been on a 110 limit), but nice to see Jerry let him finish the 5th and get his first W.

As for the Hopper/Dunn issue. I wouldn't start Hopper over Dunn, but I don't think the team would experience a huge drop if Dunn were traded and Hopper played everyday. Over the past couple of weeks, I've seen Dunn play several balls into runs (not errors) just didn't get to it or Hopper make plays in left Dunn doesn't make. His offense is what it is and I don't think paying him what he will command in the future will allow this team the financial flexibility it will need to become competitive.

George and Chris were speculating about trade possibilities last night. They were commenting that Reds may shop Lohse especially if he keeps throwing well, but teams (like the Yanks) are going to demand Arroyo/Harang to garner the type of prospects the Reds desire. Welsh basically said if Homer demonstrates front of the rotation capability, he'd do it. For the right deal, I agree.

As for the Griffey rumor, I'm not sure he actually said he'd consider a trade. I haven't seen any quotes to that effect. Seems the articles I saw were speculation based on very old statements that he'd be willing to play in Atlanta. Enlighten me if there's something more specific out there.

You mean other than the fact the guy is a left-handed Dave Kingman?

Not quite sure how Kingman comes into a conversation about how K's affect Dunn's OPS(they don't), but I'll just throw this out there for you.

Kingman Career OBP/SLG/OPS: .302/.478/.780
most BB in a season 62
scored 100 or more runs in a season: 0 times

Dunn career OBP/SLG/OPS: .380/.593/.893
most BB in a season: 128 (has 100+ 3 more times)
scored 100 runs+: 2 times and had 99 last year

The only comparison you can really make bewteen Kong and Dunn is they were both tall and hit long home runs. Dunn has the added skill set of taking walks which goes back to the fundamental rule of hitting, don't make an out. Dunn doesn't make an out(OBP) 38% of the time. For comparison sake the scrappiest player who ever lived and whom all Reds are compared to, Peter Edward Rose, had a career OBP of .375.

Some other career marks of notable players to consider when bashing Dunn:

Reggie Jackson: .356/.490/.846
Willie Stargell: .360/.529/.889
Carl Yastrzemski: .379/.462/.841
Dave Winfield: .353/.475/.828

4 HOFers Dunn is superior to in all 3 categories.

Just a quick glance of the facts will reveal this to anyone willing to look but hey, Marty says he sucks so it must be true.

Reds bullpen blows another lead
Nightmarish loss has Cincinnati griping
Sunday, June 10, 2007 3:59 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Another day and another downer muscled its way into the big book of bad memories for the Reds last night in Great American Ball Park.

The Cleveland Indians authored the latest nightmare by rallying for an 8-6 victory in front of 37,935 fans.
The Cincinnati bullpen, charged to hold a 6-4 lead heading into the eighth inning, didn't do the job again. Instead, Gary Majewski allowed a two-run homer to David Dellucci that tied the score at 6 and sent it into extra innings.
Victor Santos (1-2) managed to walk and hit a batter in the 11th and set the stage for Travis Hafner to break the tie with a fielder's choice ground ball.
The Reds were seething afterward about the strike zone of home plate Bill Miller. The pitch that mattered most was the 0-and-2 delivery by Majewski to Dellucci.
"The 0-2 pitch was right there," Reds catcher Javier Valentin said. "It was right there. Baseball is a crazy game. One pitch can change the game."

Great post Jax. I think people would give Dunn a lot more room to wiggle if his defense were at least average to above average. His offense can't be replaced if the Reds trade him, no doubt about that. Making a move to first base would be so attractive to Reds supporters that Dunn would almost be legendary if it worked out here. I would at least like to see them try it for a short spell no matter if it worked out or not. At least make an effort to improve this team. The Votto situation makes a move like that a bit more cloudy though.

Homer will end up being what we all hoped he would be if one thing occurs: Jerry Narron must go!

"The biggest thing he has to do is pitch ahead in the count a little bit better," Narron said. "You're going to foul a lot of balls off, just because of the stuff he has. But to be able to go deep in games, he's going to have to be more efficient. Either that, or he'll have to get up to a 150 pitch count, and I don't think that's going to happen."

The fact that a number like that even slipped from his lips is reason enough to panic already.

How many more games do we have to watch Santos and Stanton and co. lose this season before someone gets shipped out. Belisle is becoming the next Arroyo. When he pitches well he gets no help from his teammates. Sooner or later Belisle's pitching is going to fade, like Arroyo's, and the games won't even be close anymore. Harang will have to pitch a complete game shutout today to get the win. Oh, BTW, Narron is sitting out Griffey today our best player and one of the hottest hitters in baseball.:smash:

Aaron Harang is a horse! No other words to describe how he goes about the game. He's 116 pitches in right now in 7 innings, with 10 K's 3 hits and 2 walks. No way I trade him. No fucking way. You have to also think about the pressure off of Homer not being the #1 guy in the rotation, that if Harang leaves he would probably become.

And not a one of those HOF players ever came close to striking out 200 times, so I guess Dunn has that going for him.....

Yaaay! Fucking Stanton in for Harang. Gives up a leadoff hit to the pitcher, and another to the leadoff batter. PIECE OF SHIT!!!

Oops I guess he got Barfield out before Sabatia but that doesn't make it any better. Two outs now though with runners on 1st and 2nd.

Base hit by Martinez. Now they're loaded. Where's dumbass?!?! No subs coming in now huh?
