Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

RZ is the place to have some serious Saber conversations.

I know for me personally I got into it a few years ago(very modestly compared to the true acolytes) and it greatly enhanced my enjoyment of baseball. I would encourage anyone to look into it, keep an open mind and you'll be amazed at how much stuff you thought you knew about baseball was just flat wrong. Word of caution, your relationship with Marty(and a lot of old school types) will never be the same. :)

To the point you made about defense thats still one of the great unknowns, an accurate and reliable way to count a palyers defense into his overall production. They'll never be able to take out the human subjectivity regarding if a guy "should" have gotten to a ball or not imo.

I have no illusions as to how bad Dunn is in LF but we get a double dose in RF because JR has become an absolute statue. He's no better in RF than Dunn is in LF, he's just more graceful running after the ball he couldn't get to while it was still in the air. Add in the supposed great defensive SS we picked up booting it all over the place and this is still not a MLB caliber defense to me.

I disagree on Hamilton. I think he's as good a defensive CF as your going to get and having his bat in CF still gives you a chance to get 2 more thumpers in RF and LF. Again, no way to know for sure so its all opinion but that's mine.

As a newbie at RedsZone, I'm relegated to the SunDeck where I'm largely ignored. I'm pretty familiar with Sabermetrics but I thought that program did a good job of putting it together in a nice package. One thing it totally confirmed for me is that sacrifice bunts are totally overrated. Conine had one on Saturday night that was a total waste in the 9th. I think they have their place, like when a pitcher or weak hitter is up, but other than those situations you are wasting an out. The only other time I'd have a guy sac is when the opposing pitcher is just lights out (like Oswalt tends to be against the Reds) and you know you'll have to scrape to get anything across the dish.

I actually prefer now to look at game logs rather than the stats to judge how a player is really doing. It gives you a better idea if they are a consistent contributor or up and down. I did learn a bit more about James' lineup construction analysis from the program. I had read a few places where he said that batting order doesn't matter, however, he clarified that assumes the top batters are in the top spots. Moving Dunn out of the top 5 is bad baseball and Marty is stupid for suggesting it and Narron is even more stupid for doing it.

Anyways, I agree that Griff is not the fleetest of foot in RF, but he has been getting better at positioning himself, gets a good jump, and takes better angles on balls than Dunn. Griff's had his most problems with balls that slice away from him. I'm not on the Tracy Jones -put him back in CF- bandwagon, but I'm okay with Griffey in RF. I've always thought Dunn had a laid back personality that some misread as "lazy," but last night on Sports Talk, I heard Paul Daugherty state in a factual way that Dunn does not "care" about his defense. I've heard this more as innuendo in the past, but Daugherty spoke as if he has evidence that Dunn is not working on his D. Daugherty can be full of smoke for all I know, but thought it was an intersting statement.

I agree that Hamilton can play a very solid CF. He is the best the Reds have right now and probably above average for the league. I'd also like them to try him as a leadoff hitter. He has enough speed and looks like he can be a high OBP guy. In that case, I wouldn't mind a solid RH line drive hitting LF with plus defense and a little speed. If Torii Hunter would walk a bit more, he'd be a very interesting player as he could play CF or LF. He could probably be in the budget if they move Dunn.

rumor going around that griffey is being sent to Atlanta...have you guys heard this?

It's coming from a number of sources, but as best I can tell it isn't based on anything hard. Griffey has made statements in the past that Atlanta is one of the cities he would go to because it is close to his home and training camp is really close, plus his dad played there. Atl is looking for a bat, so there you go. I'd say that they are more in the market for another starting pitcher, so maybe a package deal with Lohse or Bronson is a more realistic possibility. I'd really like to see the Reds get their young catcher Saltalamacchia but the asking price for him is bound to be steep.

Roger Clemens, Kerry Wood, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson... Kelvim Escobar?

The Reds are about to vault him into that stratosphere. Eight strikeouts through three innings.

Escobar has always had the live arm but just never put it together.

He has the stuff to be an ace on any staff right now but until this year was either injured or inconsistent.

The Reds have seen this from him before, he threw the first complete game shutout in GABP....

That was an amazing slide by Hamilton at third - and then they successfully run the squeeze play with Ross at the plate.

Escobar has 10 strikeouts now through four innings, but not after he gives up three runs to give the Reds the lead.

I wouldn't take his .212 average with Runners in Scoring Position.

Sluggers generally do better than that.

You wouldn't take anything Dunn does. Marty told you he sucks, what else needs to be said?

I won't even waste the time it would take to explain what a rediculous concept it is to measure a power hitter(or any hitter) by BA.

BTW his OPS drops to .748 with RISP. Not up to his usual level but still respectable.

Dunn is a good offensive baseball player. I know you don't want to hear it but its the truth.

Ah ha!! There you are wrong. I don't listen to the Reds radio broadcasts.

Have fun paying a guy $10 Million a year to get the season strikeout record then while playing well below average defense.

And still not worth $10Million for a small market team.....

Which is why everyone is jumping to the table to deal for him, right?

If you want to continue to pay that kind of money to a guy who shouldn't even be in the outfield defensively and who routinely leads the league in strikeouts (aka unproductive at-bats), be my guest. I guess winning isn't everything.......

Yeah....

I don't think Escobar will be in the game long enough to get 20 now.....
