Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Forgive me for not being thrilled with 2 wins in a row. I enjoy watching good pitching and defense, but I don't think this team will sustain any kind of winning streak this season. On a positive note, Homer Bailey might not be the guy Reds fans should be beating the drum to see up in the bigs, Johnny Cueto jumped from A to AAA and won his first game. How about that?

Just a spot start for Johnny he is going back to Sarasota, it was Livingston's spot in the rotation and since Extended spring training is in Sarasota they used someone from Sarastoa to fill in the spot for Louisville, and then someone from EST to fill in for Sarasota...

Johnny threw great, and his last couple outings have been great, but I wouldnt be suprised that when he is ready for the majors he is throwing out fo the pen...

I hadn't heard much about him, just heard it on the radio this morning. He has a pretty nice K/BB ratio.

Yeah Johnny won the Reds minor league pitcher of the year award last year after dominating Dayton for the first half of the year and doing even better at Sarasota...Many thought he would start the year in Chatanooga, but they left him in Sarasota, where he has not thorwn as well as he did last year, early in the season he had a blister, but in his last couple starts and his start at Louisville things are coming around...

Either way we have some guys that look like decent starters down the road...

Carlos Fisher is one to really keep an eye on, he is Chatanooga right now, and he hasnt missed a beat after his great first month of the season with Sarasota...

Cueto is under rated due to his size. He's got a Pedro Martinez build and from what I hear a funky delivery. That will scare off the evaluators all day long and is probably still why he's in Sarasota. It can't really be based on production even though as 40 said, he's been off to a so-so start this year.

And this one belongs to the REDS! Go Redlegs....what the hell is that 3 wins in a row?

well hell if they played all their games against Central teams, they'd be golden.

The problem is the east and west coast swings that saw them go 5-14. Sure they are 15-17 against the Central, but they just happened to catch Chicago during a good week for them.

Unfortunately for you Reds fans, by losing 3 of 4 to Washington and then following that up by losing 3 of 4 to Pittsburgh, that's a 6 game swing that consistent teams will at least split.

But unlike the situation with the Yankees, the Reds slow start hasn't put them out of the division by any stretch yet. If they get it cranking, and if Milwaukee continues to falter, there is no dominant team in the NL Central. The best talent is in Chicago and the best actual team is probably Milwaukee, but neither of those two seem to be able to put it together either (like last year with St. Louis).....

St Louis wasn't that good during the regular season last year. They were just a product of a weak division and getting hot at the right time with a roster full of players with plenty of postseason experience. I wouldn't write anybody in that division off yet.

No I wouldn't and that's the point.

St. Louis had the pieces to get hot (and got REALLY lucky with their pitching) at the right time.

Cincy might be able to do that, but I think they need another starter and another guy in the bullpen (Guardado) to pull that off.

The key is Chicago. If they put it together, they have the team to win this division by 15 games. But at the moment they are struggling to get to .500, kind of like St. Louis from last year.

The Reds are their own worst enemy. I'm not worried about Chicago, their cursed. St. Louis still has enough to beat you on any given night and Milwaukee has been playing over their heads all season. Maybe the Milwaukee players are reaching their potentials, maybe not. Pittsburgh and Houston shouldn't even be in the conversation. If the Reds had a measly .500 record at home to this point, they'd be in striking distance. We've had some injuries and some demotions, lets see which direction we go in after some of those guys come back.

Just have to get within 5 by the All-Star break.

Thanks mike....I guess your saying I should damn near go out and order my World series tickets for the Redlegs. J/K

I'm just happy they are sucking less lately....but it's going to take a lot more winning to get me to feel optimistic about the team.

It's nice to see them winning and many of our suspicions were correct that a .500 ballclub could be competetive in this weak division. However, I worry that "climbing back into it" could spark this managment to make some dumb moves that might be a detriment to the future. The Reds need to start making the youth movement this year. Now if they go on a tear and get to within 2, maybe, 3 back by the break, I'd consider going for it. That would constitute a major turnaround and I don't think this team is capable. I didn't come into this season thinking "this is our year" and I still don't think it is. No use mortgaging the future for one season, especially this one.

That said, in the words of Nuke LaLoosh, "I love winning... it's like better than losing."

Very true. The worry is that we do "just good enough" to not make any changes, especially in the management department. I'm all for winning but you are right about getting the young guys in here. The best thing about getting the young guys in here is that they are probably better than the old guys right now.

The fools gold that was early season success in '06 cost us a chance to start rebuilding then, I honestly hope a torrid too little too late '07 mixed with this sad sack division doesn't extend the mistake.

I heard the Astros announcers compare the NL Central to a twit race last night. Flying circus fans know what thats all about, I was rolling.

Harang finishes the job
Goes distance; Reds win 3rd in row
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

HOUSTON - It's amazing what a little bit of good starting pitching will do.
The Reds got their third straight outstanding start and, not coincidentally, their third straight win.
Aaron Harang threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on six hits, in a 4-3 victory Wednesday over the Houston Astros.
Since the Kirk Saarloos debacle Sunday - he allowed five runs without retiring a batter - Reds starters are 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA.
The Reds have won three in a row for the first time since April 28-May 1.
"It was a matter of time," Harang said. "Hopefully, this is the start of us getting on a roll."

Continued.....
