Curtis Samuel leads Erasmus Hall to school's first-ever PSAL city championship.

Erasmus Hall running back Curtis Samuel has given a verbal commitment to Ohio State, Erasmus Hall coach Danny Landberg confirmed Friday.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Samuel is entering his senior season and is the reigning Daily News Player of the Year winner for New York City after he led the Dutchmen to their first-ever PSAL city championship last December.

Samuel chose Ohio State over Rutgers and a host of other elite programs, such as Alabama, Miami and Notre Dame. The commitment came while Landberg was visiting with Ohio State coaches.

Curtis Samuel racks up 1,047 yards last season on 91 carries for Erasmus Hall.

When asked what the clinching factor in Samuel's decision was, Landberg said "I think it was Urban Meyer himself, and how comfortable (Samuel) felt in their offense."

Landberg also said the relationship Samuel built with other coaches involved in the recruitment process was also a factor. Landberg says Meyer plans to utilize the versatile Samuel similar to how Percy Harvin was used when Meyer coached at Florida ? as a runner out of the backfield and as a receiver.

Samuel's commitment to a program the caliber of Ohio State is a major development for all of New York City, not usually regarded as a hotbed for football recruitment. Things are trending up, though. Former Thomas Jefferson lineman Ebenezer Ogundeko is now a freshman at Clemson. Poly Prep senior lineman Jay Hayes is heading to Notre Dame, and Abraham Lincoln senior lineman Thomas Holley has scores of top Division I programs vying for his services.

Samuel, who's been invited to play in the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, boasts 4.36-40 speed and racked up 1,047 yards on 91 carries in 2012 with 18 all-purpose touchdowns, 13 of which came on the ground.

Erasmus Hall RB Curtis Samuel committed to Ohio State.

Curtis Samuel garnered Division I scholarship offers from one coast to the other. There was, however, only one that mattered to Erasmus Hall?s dynamic running back/wide receiver.

The offer that came from Ohio State and head coach Urban Meyer.

Not only did the Buckeyes extend an opportunity for Samuel to play football at the powerhouse program and get a free education, they also showed they really wanted the speedy 6-foot All-American by their dogged recruiting effort which included inviting him to their prestigious Friday Night Lights event a few weeks ago that went out to only their top targets.

?I felt that their style of play fits me best than the other schools in my top five,? he told The Post on Friday, hours after verbally committing to Meyer and Co., choosing the Big Ten power over runner-up Rutgers and scores of others, such as Alabama, Miami and Notre Dame. ?My visit there went great. I spoke to a lot of their coaches and I felt that they really wanted me to be a part of Ohio State.?

Samuel led the Dutchmen to the PSAL City Championship division title at Yankee Stadium last December, scored 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1,047 yards in addition to making 12 receptions for 187 yards. He boasts eye-popping 4.36 40 speed and will compete in the US Army All-American Bowl in January.

?I?m very excited to be a part of the Ohio State program,? Samuel said.

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said Samuel?s film is the best for a skill position player he has seen in his class, and previously said if Samuel picks the right situation, he has ?the potential to be a special player.?

Samuel will be the first city recruit to attend Ohio State on a football scholarship, E-Hall coach Danny Landberg said. Meyer told Samuel, a Rivals.com four-star recruit ranked second in the state behind Lincoln All-American Thomas Holley, and Landberg he sees many of the same qualities in him as he did in Seahawks star Percy Harvin, who starred for Meyer at Florida in the same spread offense he uses at Ohio State and Landberg runs at Erasmus Hall.

?They want to use him the way he wants to be used, and that was it for him,? Landberg said. ?He understands what they?re doing [on offense]. It?s exactly what we do with him at his position.?

?I?m proud, I?m proud we?re putting these kids in a position to get a great education and learn about cultures outside of New York City and put themselves in a position where they can better their families lives and become great men,? he added.

Lizzi said that Meyer recruited Samuel personally, pledging to have him play the slot position made famous by Percy Harvin at Florida. That?s how Samuel is used by Erasmus. He ran for 1,047 yards last year, averaging 11.5 yards per carry. He caught 12 passes for 187 yards.

?Part of the reason Curtis fell in love with Ohio State and with Urban Meyer and his staff was that they made clear they wanted him to run that slot role like he does here,? Lizzi said. ?Curtis was a space player from Day 1 here, and I think Day 1 is when Curtis is going to contribute at Ohio State.?

Samuel attended Ohio State?s Friday Night Lights camp in July. During that event, Meyer quizzed Samuel about football X?s and O?s.

?Coach Meyer was amazed by his football I.Q.,? Lizzi said.

He described Samuel as a humble, respectful and quiet guy who shies away from attention. He said that Samuel once changed a play in the huddle that was designed for him so that he could block for a teammate instead.

Lizzi said that Samuel is a solid student with a 3.1 grade point average.

Curtis Samuel -- Junior Film

Wow. Had to watch that first play about 5 times. Sick

Curtis looks like he's this year's Dontre Wilson that we're recruiting. Killer on the Jet Sweep/Reverse and making everyone miss. Kid just glides. He's a playmaker and another fantastic pivot candidate for this offense.

There are a couple of plays where it looks like they fast-forwarded the film only on his image. Amazing acceleration on the cut upfield in the play that starts at the 1:56 mark.

Wow, it looks like they put everyone else on the field into slow motion. Has to be some kind of camera trick. :wink2:

Can you imagine two years of having DeSoto and Samuel back to receive kickoffs, there is no safe place to kick the ball, except out of the end zone.
