RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

Fortunately thus far, whenever Mo Wells starts getting the ball, the game is basically out of reach. That being said, mo wells is pretty much a drive killer almost always. We'll get a couple first downs, and in comes Mo Wells, 3 and out.....I obviously would like to see b saine get some of those carries, and i'm pretty sure that if we needed some points and beanie needed a rest that b saine would be the one coming in not mo wells. That being said, when this offense is trying to move the ball, it is pretty damn good...I think itd be that much better with B. Saine being the clear cut number 2 back, ...but isn't it sick to think about the juniors who left early off of this offense....pittman, ginn gonzo, damn.

WE all know that Mo doesn't have the abilities that Beanie has, they are different types of backs. Beanie has more weight ,and along with that more power. That doesn't mean that Mo is not an asset to this team. To the contrary he has run well this year. He needs different types of plays for him to excel. This year he has shown me lots of heart and purpose.
We need to be just as supportive to him as JT and the team is.
I really like the job he has been assigned this year and the way he is aggresively doing that job.

MoWells needs to not run up the middle anymore. I have really gotten sick of it. He tries to go through runners, and that is not what he is good at it. He is good at making people miss.

He is a great blocking back. He should almost always be in on 3rd and long. But, not for a handoff.

Switch up the package of plays for Mo. Sweeps, reverses, short dumpoffs to the sideline on 1st down for 4-5 yards, screen passes, quarterback throwbacks, and counter runs. Not power runs right up the middle.

Am I the only one here thinking that maybe Tress has most/all of us fooled?

Use Lil' Wells up the gut all year (only sometimes going outside)...then when it's the 3'rd week in Nov. Use him all over in space!!!

I mean think about it- it wouldn't surprise me at all. As many here have stated when he gets in the plays become predictable...just what Tress might want teams to think!

MoW has had a coule nice runs this year and is improved over last year, but I wouldnt go as far as saying he's been effective. More like serviceable. I can't put my finger on it but it just looks like the holes he picks to run at are clogged and then he just doesnt' have the strength to break the arm tackles. Hopefully our offense can put him in a better spot to succeed

Boeckman and Beanie fumbled! Mo Wells didn't!
He's doing what he is told to do. I don't like people criticizing him for doing his best with the play selection.
Very few running backs are Beanie Wells!
And Saine is still a true freshman learning how to play major college football.
Stop hatin'!

Mo Wells simply isn't being used properly. He is not a "Big Ten Between the tackles" running back. He's a scat back. Give him the ball in space and watch him go. Would you run Ted Ginn between the tackles? no.

preaching to the choir on this one....I haven't seen us run Mo with a counter pitch, toss sweep, or anything that really gets him outside the tackle all season...

Mo caught one catch for minus 2 yards. I guess I was wrong, which leaves me to believe...

...Mo Wells shouldn't be in there at all (regardless of score). Correction, I'd give Mo garbage time only to prevent Beanie, Saine, Christian and other walk-ons from getting injured.

umm... in case you missed it, that one catch was an interception that he stole from the defender. he TOTALLY bailed Boeckman out on a ball that should have never been thrown.

they ran a counter from the silver package with Ballard pulling against Washington. it went for good yardage.

my first impression is that we were in the I a LOT more this week than in the past seven games... i need to go back and watch it again. the silver set gives us the most diversity...

Not sure exactly if it was a toss-sweep, but after Beanie got us out of our own endzone against Purdue, they put in Mo and he got a big gainer to the left. The problem with putting Mo in after running Beanie up the gut is everyone and their cousin knows we will be trying to run outside or pass on that down.

Mo Wells didn't carry it 31 times, either! C'mon, man.
He didn't, nor would he have, run for 200+ yards against MSU.

I think Mo has certainly improved this season, and when the hole is there staring him in the face, he has hit it hard and has run hard. But, like Lydell Ross before him, when the sledding is tough, he doesn't make anybody miss, doesn't break any tackles, and doesn't create something from nothing.
Saine has shown an ability to do all of those things.

Now, if we are in a passing play with one back, I would rather have Mo in there rather than Saine, because he has always shown he can pass block and receives well. But if it's time to run the ball and Beanie's on the bench, then please let's have Saine. Mo is just not going to get it done on standard running plays against these last 4 opponents.

We need to run a separate package when Mo is in there spelling Beanie. The problem with that is there are times when a spread-type package won't be appropriate for the game situation. That's when the staff needs to put in Saine instead of Mo.

The fact is that some of the tme when Beanie was taking a breather against MSU, both Mo and Saine were in there - and hopefully that's something we'll see more of. I just hope it's more effective going forward than it was Saturday.
