I find it hard to chime in on Maurice topics anymore. I wish him the best in whatever may come. But, more so, I wish the best for OSU and the Buckeyes. If he wants to come back, and JT and AG are OK with it, I'll be OK with it. The circus that has surrounded Maurice for almost the entire last year is/has been ... (I'm searching for the right word here) ... depressing. The enjoyment I get from Ohio State football was diminished by the constant focus on Maurice. The enjoyment I used to get from Bucknuts was diminished by the constant focus on Maurice (and other factors, but that's another topic). I'm tired of great kids and coaches being "overlooked" as fans and media rush to get any information on a young man who is not even on the team (technically Maurice may be ON the team, but suspended ... I don't know how that works).
I hope Mili is correct and Maurice does still decide to return and better himself. I am doubtful. I understand that Maurice must make the decisions that are best for him and his family. What one of us wouldn't do the same? And yet, Maurice continues to make poor decisions. Decisions that leave me scratching my head and wondering why. Granted, I am older and have learned from many mistakes. I cannot say that being in Maurice's cleets and at his age I wouldn't be making the same choices. One thing is for sure. I dread another football season such as this past one. Not being able to relish the great moments because we must constantly return to the "saga" is tiring, trying, annoying. Never being able to attain a point of closure is frustration, embarrasing, and builds resentment. I find this hard to say (because I have continually tried to be supportive of Maurice), but it might be a relief (to me) if he did go to the NFL. If he returns, I don't trust Maurice (or his advisors) to make the appropriate decisions. I will be continually waiting, waiting, waiting for the other shoe to drop ... the next episode to occur. I know that is a selfish reaction on my part, but I'm selfish when it comes to the Buckeyes. Thankfully, I do not have to make any of these decisions.
Finally, I am VERY proud of Jim Tressel, Andy Geiger, the coaches and staff for their handling of this issue. They have taken the "high road" in every instance that I can think of. They have not "bad mouthed" Maurice. They have not played the "he said, she said" game. They declined to get into a racial dispute with Maurice's "advisor". They handled Maurice's lawsuit (against the university) with aplomb. They kept Maurice on scholarship. They worked to keep OSU's reputation in tack. They gave Maurice a path back to the Buckeyes and left the door open ... now, will Maurice walk through it? That's the question. With the way Maurice has handled himself the past year, and the people he seeming has to advise him ... I am doubtful.
