RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

I don't think that Clarett did anything wrong but I do not see this as a positive happening. If anything it will hurt Clarett in all aspects of the game. Remember Joe Namath?
The thing that I am concerened about is the stuff before the Buckeye games. I can just see the rumors starting now of Mo passing information god I hope this is not true but it is not good.

why would that seal his fate? ESPN didn't report anything that OSU and the NCAA didn't already know about since the summer. where do you think ESPN got the records from? OSU of course. this is old news to the NCAA. IMO it isn't anything new in their eyes.

They haven't even proven that Dellimutti bet on OSU games, or that Clarett knew he gambled at all.

If ESPN did not report anything new, then why was a statement read to the press on Geiger's behalf indicating that OSU would look into the gambling matters and will cooperate with any and all investigations regarding the gambling issue? Perhaps the phone records were always in the possession of the NCAA and OSU, but from reading the statement read to the press on Geiger's behalf, there is no doubt in my mind that the gambling issues have not yet been fully investigated.

I'm boycotting ESPN because this just seems like vindictive journalism. Just because they know that people will click on the link or tune into their sportscenter our outside the lines program (to make money themselves) they apparently do not care at all about the actual people involved and immediately condemn based on assumption.

I'm really not upset because anyone with common sense can look at the story as sensationalism, but their dramatics are a bit much for my taste. If this were about a kid from any school I would look at it the same way.

"Clarett did not necessarily do anything wrong here,"

So why then should he be punished?

He should not be punished (punishment defined to be no reinstatement and release from the scholarship) unless he did something improper to warrant punishment. Having said that, I believe there are too many skeletons falling out of his closet to ever make Geiger comfortable with filing the reinstatement paperwork. Geiger's statement read to the press earlier tonight is couched in terms that OSU will look into the issues raised by the ESPN article and will support and cooperate in any and all investigations relating to the gambling issue. This is telling me that OSU has not yet investigated the gambling issues raised by ESPN.

I agree with you guys. It is another black eye for the University simply because it is MoC, but how the heck did the gambler benefit? No games were lost when he played, he was continuously playing hard even when hurt, and all he wanted to do was beat every team he faced.

"ESPN.com's investigation came across no evidence to suggest that Clarett gambled, shaved points or tried to compromise the result of Ohio State games. In fact, he earned a reputation during the 14-0 national championship season for his competitiveness and his willingness to play with shoulder and knee injuries."

I wish the article would have stopped right there. Unfortunately there are 14 paragraphs before and 33 after it. I'd say that's pretty effectively buried.

If the NCAA has already determined that OSU had no institutional culpability in knowing that Maurice was dealing with this guy, why the hell would they be culpable if the guy was a gambler.

There was not a shred of evidence in that article that Maurice did anything wrong. Heck, there's not a shred of evidence that Delimutti bet on OSU. The best line in the story is when it says something like "including 10 calls in 3 weeks leading up to the Fiesta Bowl". What, he called 10 times to place different bets? There were dozens of NFL games in that time.

Besides, what if Maurice passed along info to this guy? Can they prove he knew he was a gambler? If I was calling Maurice all the time, you know what kinds of questions I'd ask? "Insider" info. I'd say, "Hey, Mo, how's your shoulder? What about Wilhelm, is he going to be able to play on Saturday." Not because I'm a gambler, because I want to know.

Also, FSU QB Adrian McPherson bet on games in which he played. Were there any sanctions against FSU? The insinuations of this story are absurd.
