RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

What happened last summer was that Claretts High School Coach "(Thom McDaniels) set up some type of skull session between MC and Marcus Allen that MC blew off. From where I was sitting then, and where I'm sitting now, I had/have no problem with that "issue."

That SI article also mentioned how Clarett was looking into his eligibility options as far as going back to OSU right before the combine.

This kid has taken some majorly bad advice, and is tremendously stupid: he's not even close to being in shape. I'd be shocked if someone takes him before the 4th Round.

I hope this female judge's ruling is overturned, and I think, in fact that it will be after this year's NFL Draft. However, if this is the final year whereby Sophomores can enter the Draft, it worked out for us b/c I want this kid as far away from the Program as humanly possible!

If my memory serves me correctly, his high school coach (Thom McDaniel) did set that meeting up ahead of time. There was a lot of controversy surrounding that story (surprise, surprise) because McDaniel blasted Clarett in the media, while MoC said he didn't know anything about it. Given MoC's history, I think I'll believe his coach.

I think you might have hit upon a good point Sloopy. I read somewhere (can't recall at the moment) that the ruling will most likely get overturned AFTER MoC is in the NFL. Basically it was explained like this. MoC gets into the NFL and then has no need or inclination to fight further appeals. MoC gets what he wants (NFL career) and the NFL then gets to have the ruling overturned because MoC will no longer fight appeals.

3yards,

I personally would be shocked if this isn't overturned. The NFL got broad-sided on this because it went to court, and lost because of a quirky scUM grad, female judge - I don't think that her ruling can stand up in a court of appeals (IMO). The only thing that kept this ruling alive is the fact that there's no time to appeal between now and the Draft, and there's no way the NFL will push back the Draft solely because of MoC.

However, the NFL might have a hard time appealing this if MoC and Mike Williams enter this year, because it sets a precedence. But, we'll see how this turns out.

Anyway, regardless, as long as MoC is far, far, away and pleased with ruining what could've been one of the greatest careers in football for a 4th Round Selection, then I'm happy too.

I'd be shocked if this kid isn't drafted in the later second round.
A player taken after the 40th pick is usually not any kind of impact player.
He's be a great pick for a team in the later second round that is in no hurry to rush him into the starting lineup.
He'll go before the fourth round. Third at the latest. I'd still bet that someone like the Denver Broncos could grab him in the second.

Clarett appeal

i need some clarification here. the nfl is appealing the Clarett decision. what happens if they win? will he, along with williams and others, still be ineligible for ncaa? or will they be allowed to come back?

Clarett has hired agents and has been making money various ways related to his athletic ability. I don't know about Williams, but I'm sure he's in the same boat. There is no way they get back into college.

I've heard the real interesting scenario that could occur would be if the NFL wins here and then Clarett/Williams would win their appeal and a supplemental draft would take place. I'm not sure how exactly they work but apparently the team that picks them up loses future draft picks and the players aren't paid nearly what they would had they got through the regular draft.

Traditionally as everyone knows, the higher drafted the more money a person gets. As teams picks are used up so is their money. A supplemental draft throws a huge wrench into what a team can spend because in a sense, when the draft is over they have essentially spent their money; unless of course people restructure their contracts for the sake of the team and the cap.

"I'm not sure how exactly they work but apparently the team that picks them up loses future draft picks"

If the NFL wins their appeal, Clarett, Williams, and the other challengers won't be eligible for the draft in a couple weeks and thus SOL. Should Clarett and the others win a subsequent appeal after the draft has occurred, they are still SOL because the teams will have used all their normal draft allocations during that draft. My understanding of supplemental drafts are that they "optional" in that it gives teams an opportunity to select players previously unavailable, yet the drafts aren't mandatory. Thus, even if a supplemental draft were held for Clarett and the others, there is nothing that says a team has to select them.
