It can be if you try to get on an international flight with that much cash without declaring it.

I'm not saying that was MoC's intention - I just like to get nitpicky with lawyers. :wink2:

True. But not many people walk around with $30 large without committing a crime shortly before or after. I don't know anything about the incident....but there just aren't a great number of good reasons to carry that kinda cash. And there's one really good reason NOT to carry that kinda cash, so it's probably a fair question to ask.

Clarett is asking a judge to allow him to travel to try out with the Omaha Nighthawks football team of the United Football League Clarett pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon and served 3? years in a Toledo prison. He is attending classes at Ohio State while living in a detention facility in Columbus.

COITSVILLE

Maurice Clarett will talk about his time in jail. He?ll talk about learning from his mistakes. He?ll talk about his faith, his future and his dreams of making it back to the NFL.

What he won?t talk about, at least this week, is Jim Tressel.

The former Ohio State standout declined comment Wednesday about his former college coach, who stepped down on Monday amid a scandal over players swapping autographs and memorabilia for tattoos.

?I don?t weigh in with my opinion,? said Clarett, who was in town to speak to high school students at Victory Christian Center. ?I feel like there?s enough opinions out there with everything that?s going on.?

Clarett, who led the Buckeyes to the national championship in 2002, was found to have received money and other benefits at Ohio State and was suspended for the 2003 season. He has since repaired his relationship with Tressel ? Clarett said he spoke to him on Tuesday night ? and told the students that the people in this Valley should support the former Youngstown State coach

?Coach Tressel, he?s a hometown guy,? said Clarett, a South Side native who graduated from Warren Harding High. ?I feel like everybody from the area should support him because he?s done enough for this community and he?s done enough for the people here.

?He?s a very [devoted] Christian and I?ll just leave it at that.?

Maurice Clarett Comes Home to Talk to Youth Group
Updated: 6/01

"There's a lot of people who helped me in my time coming up," says Maurice Clarett. "Mistakes I've made, people who've given me second chances, gave me information."

So Maurice Clarett says he wants to give back what he can to his hometown. The former Ohio Mr. Football at Warren Harding, went on to win a National Championship in his freshman season at Ohio State. Before a long list of bad choices, and run-ins with the law landed him in prison.

"If they see me going through what I'm going through, and make it through what I make it through," says Clarett. "And maybe they can triumph through their certain situation, or certain hardships through life."

Clarett answered questions during the "Each One, Reach One" youth service at The Riot, on the campus of Victory Christian Center. Pastor Nate Ortiz spent his freshman year of high school with Clarett at Austintown Fitch, and reached out to him on Facebook, to come speak to these kids.

"I just felt like he just had a lot just to share of his life experiences, and how he's turning it around," says Pastor Nate Ortiz. "Especially being from the area, from the Youngstown area, I think it's just great for him to be able to come and impart some wisdom to some of the younger kids coming up."

One thing Clarett didn't talk about, is the recent trouble with the Buckeyes. Specifically, his former head coach, Jim Tressel, resigning from the team and University amid controversy earlier this week.

"I have no interest in speaking on Ohio State...," says Clarett.

What Clarett is interested in now is spending time with family, and four-year-old daughter Jayden, whether in Columbus or the Valley.

"They still support me, and you know this is home," says Clarett. "And will forever be my home."

Next week, Clarett will be back in a football uniform. Getting ready to start his second season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. He says he hasn't ruled out a possible return to the NFL one day, but also says football just isn't as important as it once was in his life.

How can they confiscate the cash without charging him with a crime? Something doesn't add up.

It could be a crime if it is connected to his brother's alleged drug dealing:

On the same day in Canfield, the agents arrested Clarett?s brother, Michael, 30, of Ravenwood Avenue, Youngstown, on a warrant.

Michael Clarett had been secretly indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury that day on charges of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and four counts of heroin trafficking.

The task force alleged Michael Clarett engaged in drug trafficking in Canfield between Jan. 19 and Feb. 22 this year and seeks forfeiture of two cars allegedly used for heroin sales.

That case is before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who is to conduct a pretrial hearing at 8:30 a.m. June 2. A jury trial is set to begin June 6.

Michael Clarett?s lawyer, J. Gerald Ingram, posted a $15,085 cash bond to free him from jail.

Michael Clarett also was arrested in Alliance around the same time on marijuana-trafficking charges.

I guess at least he's defending coach Tressel.

But I don't know if he incriminating Ohio State or the Central Ohio community or not.

The good thing is, since it's Dan Patrick and the Mothership won't want to give him publicity, anything from this interview won't be on ESPN.

Good interview.

Said everything he did he did on his own and reached out on his own. There was no one at or affiliated with the university that reached out to him. He doesn't even know who the boosters are at Ohio State.

Spoke on the culture of where many of these athletes come from and the culture shock of being around a college as opposed to the streets and having your mom, dad, aunts, uncles everyone depending on you and not having money.

Tress is a good man and would have been found out to be a fraud a long time ago if he truly was. He made up the stuff up because he was just trying to create problems and he would have been happy five years ago about hearing Tress got fire.

Yeah, I like DP a lot but you can tell what side he is on in this argument. Too many people who didn't follow Tress couldn't wait to see him fall and don't want to hear/think about the other side of the story.

And like you said the mothership won't touch this one.

The thing I got out of it is, Maurice Clarett won't drop a dime on anyone. Defending his boy (Coach Tressel) until the end.

I kind of wish they'd at least ask how he was doing after prison rather than concentrating on the negative (current OSU situation). However, that isn't really prevalent at this juncture.

Maurice Clarett talks about culture problem at Ohio State

by DP Show on June 8, 2011 in Dan Patrick Show

Former Ohio State star Maurice Clarett joined the show to talk about his former coach Jim Tressel being forced to resign and the culture at major college football programs.

Clarett said that players from the inner city aren?t prepared for college. They?ve never seen anyone succeed in an academics so it doesn?t mean anything to them. ?Guys in inner cities only believe what they see,? Clarett said. He said it?s a culture problem.

Clarett said he didn?t need to sell memorabilia because people recognized him and then he?d form a relationship with them. ?There was no need to,? Clarett said. ?I was on a different level just through playing.?

Clarett made it clear that players go out and form their own relationships in the community. ?Coaches and university have no control of what the players are doing,? Clarett said.

Clarett did defend players that get cars in college. He said it?s not so bad to go from place to place. He said it?s not like they?re committing crimes in those cars.

Clarett still had very kind things to say about Jim Tressel, who he said earned a lot of respect at Ohio State. He said Clarett is a ?man?s man.? And he doesn?t think Tressel was two-faced. ?You can?t be a fraud for 30 years,? Clarett said. He said he may not have felt that way back when he was kicked out of the program after his freshman year, but he certainly does now that he understands more about life.

Clarett talked about the impact of being in prison had on him. ?Once you live with nothing ? your whole perspective on life changes. I can?t sit here and feel the same way,? Clarett said.
