RB Lydell Ross (official thread)

I'm officially on the Ross is a "below average back" bandwagon.

When Pittman got carriers, he actually hit the hole with speed and was a threat to take it all the way. Ross is a liability and needs to be on the bench.

I feel bad for the kid, but I have to agree we've given him 3 games now. Seriously what has he shown us? I think they need to give Pittman a look. I will be shocked if our coaching staff is watching tape the next couple days and doesn't say to themselves dang look at Pittman cut it out for two 5 yard gains. Pittman jus has more burst and hits the hole harder. With our quick O-line the wholes open quickly so therefore I'd only guess we need a quicker back ya know?

Rushing
Ohio St. Rush Yds Avg Lng TD FumL
L. Ross 25 44 1.8 8 1 1
A. Pittman 2 9 4.5 6 0 0
M. Hall 4 4 1.0 2 0 0
J. Zwick 9 2 0.2 15 0 0

If he gets around 600 carries this year he may break a 1,000. Has I posted in another thread he just does not have the vision, burst, or natural feel for a RB. He is first-class kid and anyone who has been on BN knows I have always been in his corner but this is getting ridiculous. I am not sure if I have ever seen a more average OSU RB or running game. Woody would be sick to his stomach over this. And don't give me the injuries, 8 man fronts, and the OL line. Other teams get it done...

Not sure if I can agree C...then again, none of us know what happens in practice or if Pitt knows all of the blocking schemes

Given what Ross has been through, how his attitude has been through that, and that he's a senior -- I just have a really hard time saying we should move on completely. I'd like to see Ross getting 10-15 carries next game, Pittman 10 or so, and another 5 or so to 'others'. If Pittman continues to show something, then he gets more in the next game. Let the kids decide it on the field.

No way should TP only be getting 2 carries in a game.

Had Ross not fumbled when he did, we probably would have been satisfied with his game. But the timing was horrific.

I really like and respect Ross as a guy, I really want him to be successful, but my interests put the team before the player, and that's why I'm suggesting we need to be easing towards a transition if someone else is willing to step up and take the wheel.

NCSU has an impressive D. Reminded me of our own the way they were aggressive, quick and all over the ball on every play. I wasn't expecting much more offense than we had, but I did want to see 0 turnovers. JZ did his part, LR didn't.

Exactly. That and the fact JT is loyal to his seniors has to be the reason Ross continues to get most of the carries. The fact Lydell has fumbled in each of the last two games has to push Pittman up the depth chart. Why Mo Hall is getting carries is beyond me. I still can't figure out why Haw didn't see any action in the first two games. We're going to be awfully green at tailback next fall.

Yeah, why TP isn't getting at least those carries has me scratching my head. But a great psychologist once told me I just don't understand the game, so I accept my limitations.

I think everyone agrees Pittman needs to see more carries. My whole point is that I'd like to see a near even split between Ross and Pittman next week. No sense in throwing TP to the proverbial wolves, no sense in not giving Lydell more chances to address his deficiencies. If TP plays out as the more productive back (I think most here (myself included) lean towards that being likely), then there's no downside to him taking over as the every-down guy.

Lydell idolizes Eddie. The problem is he seems to be modelling his play after 2002-2004 Eddie (run up the gut for 2 yards and fall down), and not Eddie in his prime.

Not sure if I am ever going to be satisfied with 1.8 YPC from a senior when you know your young QB is starting for the first time on the road... Step up I am not saying bench him completely but let's throwout the didn't feel we wanted to play a youngster in that situation. Especially when the senior fumbles on a crucial play that was a play ran so they could lineup Nuge for the game finisher...

He has gotten more than 3 games to prove himself. He is a senior - 2 year starter with a career that involves playing well against Indiana...

Right. Ross does well against teams like Indiana, Cincinnati, and Northwestern. I wonder what his best rushing performance is against teams like scUM, Purdue or Iowa?

I agree with Clarity, Ross should still start but Pittman's PT needs to be increased in a big way.
