RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

Video - MiamiHerald.com

This video shows Berry on sideline getting attention just after the play that knocked him out of the game with an ankle injury vs. South Dade last week (Palmetto won 16-14). Again, from what I have heard this is not something serious, but enough that they want to be cautious. Keep in mind that Thursday night's game vs. Varela was non-district and next week's games vs. Homestead and Coral Reef, although not enitrely pushovers, are district games that Palmetto can and should win (even without Berry) and winning these two would get them in the state playoffs. The crutches are only meant for him to be able to walk on the aircast, but from what I heard he could walk around without the crutches, it's just that he'd be a bit sore. Kind of like anyone of us getting whacked in the ankle really, really hard, you wouldn't want to be playing any kind of sport on it.

Berry and the rest of Palmetto have a much better offensive line this year than last (so that should say something about his fine performance last year).

Lamar Miller, who plays at arch-rival Killian (who Palmetto will play in a few weeks), is doing well on one of the top high school teams in the state, but he has a very impressive front 5 (perhaps the best with the exception of Columbus where Jakari Gore (related to Frank Gore of 49ers) plays.

Appreciate the updates, please keep them coming.

Berry wasn't playing tonight and his team sure could have used them as they lost a close 14-13 game to Homestead under rainy skies. It was basically a tough luck loss on a last second play. The weather really was a dominant factor and contributed to a lot of issues. Palmetto's QB also took a major pop near the end of the game.

Berry no longer is on crutches and has what can only be described as a small piece of padding (think of soccer shin pads) on either side of his leg and can readily walk without issue.

Palmetto is still in contention for the district title despite the loss and although next week's team is still not quite a give me, it remains to be seen whether Berry will be rested for one more week or be given a chance against Coral Reef before the big matchup against Lamar Miller (Miami commit) and Killian the following week.

Officially, Palmetto has 3 games remaining with the possibility of entering the state playoffs.

With Palmetto's 17-0 victory over Coral Reef earlier tonight, Palmetto clinched a spot in the state playoffs and will play for the district title against Lamar Miller (Miami recruit) and Killian next week. After that, Palmetto plays a non-district game against North Miami Beach before playing their first playoff game.

With regard to Berry, he may not see any action until the state playoffs (which is likely Southwest or Sunset high schools, both from a very non-competitive district). Berry is entirely off crutches and any kind of leg support and can walk just fine, and the most likely scenario heard is that it really doesn't make sense to risk any kind of injury with two games of a largely irrelevant nature coming up. Palmetto or Killian could easily beat their potential state playoff opponents and will likely play a rematch in the state playoffs.

Add to this the fact that tonight one Palmetto running back had 197 yards and another Palmetto running back had 113 yards, and you can see that Palmetto has nothing to worry about as far as a running attack the next two games. Palmetto has a MUCH better offensive line compared to the competition than last year's team, and I think the fine offensive line of the Buckeyes (best in the country in my opinion) will do just fine for Berry.

Berry's team lost 29-0 to Killian in the district championship, but had already qualified for the playoffs. Berry did not see action, but can fully walk/run but will not be expected to see action until at least the 1st round playoff against Miami Southwest in 2 weeks. Palmetto has one remaining and irrelevant regular season contest against North Miami Beach, which has also qualified for the playoffs. The only difference this contest against Killian made was the playoff seeding. Southwest is a team that had major trouble against a team Palmetto soundly beat, Varela, so that should tell you about Palmetto's playoff prospects.

Jaamal Berry's big-play ability should get him on the field early at Ohio State.
Top home run threats

What Scouts Inc. looks for: Simply put, a home run threat can take it to the house on any given carry. Excellent top-end speed and the extra gear needed to separate from faster defensive backs in the second level are required. Give these guys a small crease or the edge on the perimeter and they can take it the distance. A home run threat has to be elusive; most big runs stem from breaking an initial tackle or making the first defender miss in space.

1. Jaamal Berry (Miami/Palmetto)

Berry has been banged up during his senior campaign, but we feel the Buckeyes are getting a potential game-breaker in this exciting Miami running back. Berry has posted some striking 40 times on the combine circuit and the explosive runner has excellent "play speed" between the white lines as well. A threat to break off a big one every time he touches the ball, Berry has excellent top-end speed in the second level combined with the elusiveness and deceptive strength needed to beat the first wave of defenders to get there.

I have been to Palmetto games this year, and I have heard Ole Miss mentioned at about 3 of them, including last week's game against Killian. The only talk I hear from fans (young fans, likely fellow students) on the Palmetto side is that Ole Miss is talking to him. I hear zero going the other about Berry's actual interest. Ohio St. seems to be mentioned more often by older fans.

I actually hear a lot of talk about junior RB Jakari Gore (related to Frank Gore of the 49ers) who plays for Miami Columbus, which is right now the top team in 6A (highest classification). Jakari actually showed up at last week's Palmetto v. Killian game to watch Killian's RB Lamar Miller (a Miami verbal). This week Columbus and Killian face off against each other with Palmetto playing North Miami Beach, both this Friday night.

As mentioned earlier, Palmetto has qualified for the state playoffs and will play next Friday against Miami Southwest.
