BERRY SITS OUT
THURSDAY'S VICTORY
Many expected Thursday's game between Palmetto and Southridge to be a showdown between running backs Jaamal Berry and Brandon Oliver.
But Berry, the top-rated running back in the nation by ESPN, sat out while resting a wrist injury. According to Palmetto coach Larry Coffey, Berry injured his left wrist during the team's preseason classic against Miami Springs and had been playing with a broken bone.
Berry had surgery on his wrist earlier this week, and a pin was inserted, but he was cleared to play. Coffey said he is not sure if Berry, who was wearing a cast from his left wrist to halfway up his forearm, will play next week.

I wanted to post some Berry news. Miami Palmetto beat Varela 24-8 without Berry. Actually his 2 backups combined for over 300 yards rushing. Berry was on the sidelines with an aircast on one ankle and on crutches. I spoke to a few people and they expect him to be back in action in about 2 weeks.

When Berry has played this year, it's not that he is not playing as well, because every time he touches the ball, he does damage. However, Palmetto has been running a somewhat unorthodox offense in the 1st half (even over Varela) that involves a 5 receiver set with no backfield. It's hit or miss with this setup and actually Palmetto led only 3-0 at he half before going to a conventional system. Two weeks ago when they beat South Miami 24-0 that was much the same case and Berry barely got any touches in the 1st half, before exploding for touchdowns in the second half, even having one called back. However, Palmetto is 5-1 this year so they are doing something right.

from InsidetheU.com:

Scout lists him has having the fastest 40 time (4.31) of any of their top 100 RBs. They indicated that "A bit of a short-strider, he doesn't really run away from people, but he has enough game speed to eat up 20-30 yards in a hurry". However, they say he need improvement on:

Breakaway Speed

Give me a break, with a 40 time of 4.31 he will run away from people. :tongue2:
