Palmetto star RB Berry subdued by Columbus defense

As the final minutes rolled off the Tropical Park Stadium game clock, you could sense by the bounce and excitement on the home sideline that the reality of the moment was beginning to set in.

ESPN - Pep Rally: Berry picks Buckeyes - Insider

Berry Good News In Columbus
By Billy Tucker

There may be some uncertainty surrounding the running back position in Columbus, Ohio, this week, but the Buckeyes certainly received some great news regarding the future of the position with a commitment from Jaamal Berry (Palmetto, Fla.), ESPN's No 1-rated back, on Sunday.

Although the electrifying runner might not be able to help OSU with its current backfield situation, he is a significant land out of the state of Florida. His addition puts Ohio State's large class in strong contention for a high ranking come February. We caught up with one of the nation's most highly coveted prospects this week to see what propelled OSU to the top.

It seems like coaches will promise almost anything today to land a commitment from a key skill player -- Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden openly admitted he promised highly regarded true freshmen Jamie Harper the first carry of the 2008 season when recruiting him. But Berry said he was sold on Ohio State's sincerity, not gridiron assurances.

For the Palmetto High School running back, Ohio State just felt right from the moment he visited campus in April to watch its Scarlet and Gray spring game. The Under Armour All-American said he made a checklist of all the things he wanted out of a college shortly after, and OSU fit all the categories.

? Palmetto 24, Miami High 6: Running back Jaamal Berry ran for 144 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns as Palmetto overcame three first half turnovers to easily defeat Miami High at Harris Field.

Berry put the Panthers on the scoreboard early in the first quarter. Following a 70-yard kickoff return by Darryl Williams, Berry scampered for 33 yards into the end zone on the second play of the drive.

Is there UF alumni on the rivals.com staff or something? They insist on making us believe that Berry isn't solid on OSU according to "less-biased" sources, and is a top candidate for a commitment switch to Florida. I"ll assume their "less-biased" sources dress up in orange and blue a couple times a week.

I talked to Jaamal the other day and he said he is very excited to line up with Pryor in the backfield. He said he is ready to get to Columbus and win MULTIPLE championships. When I talked to him back in like July or something, he had been in Jamaica and thought about committing as soon as he got back but his trip was delayed or something. He also said he is good friends with Frankie Telfort and that Telfort might migrate north with him next summer to play football.

OSU landed Jaamal Berry without applying as much pressure as the other schools recruiting him or promising opening-game touches. That may be a good thing; Harper fumbled his first career carry last Saturday in Clemson's 34-10 upset loss to Alabama.

Ha ha, there is justice in the world.
