RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

I'm going to put my money on him getting the test scores. Miami Palmetto High School is the best public high school academically in Miami-Dade County, and perhaps all of South Florida. It usually winds up among the top 50 to 100 high schools in the country, public or private. There's a lot of support and attention given by the teachers to students at this school. It's well known for that.

I've RARELY known a kid coming out of that school and not getting the required scores/grades to play in college. It's actually a school also well known in athletics for often winning the Miami Herald's annual best sports program in Dade County.

They've only had a few of their alumni ever get to the NFL, including two current NFL players in RB Cecil Sapp and OL Chris Myers (both on the Houston Texans). Myers' younger brother is an offensive lineman on the current Palmetto squad.

Good info. Thanks. This years incoming Freshman class averaged a 27 on their ACT. Entrance test scores are lowered for athletes. tOSU continues to be one of the most selective public universities in the country. This is a far cry than when i went to college. Back then you had to be a resident of Ohio and breathing to be admitted. Aaaah those were the days! :tongue2:

Though he didn't start, Berry did see action tonight in Palmetto's 38-14 loss to North Miami Beach. The game was very close in the first half, but Palmetto's defense just couldn't contain NMB at all and at times both teams appeared spent given the 85+ F humid temps. NMB was ranked in the state top 10 to start the season.

I'd estimate that Berry had over 50 yards but probably just a bit under 100. He had a very long, I'd say 40 to 50 yard run on his first carry and a few good long 10+ gains, but on other plays they'd run him straight up the middle and he couldn't get more than a few yards. He only played 2 quarters and with less than 10 touches. He definitely does have his full stride back as his one big run was only stopped by a trip on the artificial turf.

Berry and other top Palmetto players were pulled later in the game.

The game was irrelevant though as Palmetto had already qualified for the playoffs and will play Miami Southwest next Friday night. Expect Berry to start.

I am not staying up to await the box score and stats, but those interested can check here and click on the result of the North Miami Beach game when it shows up, High School Sports - MiamiHerald.com

They ran him up the middle and he only got a few yards? Looks like he'll fit in very well here!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself!

I couldn't figure it out either. I mentioned many posts ago that Palmetto runs an unorthodox style attack where they split 5 wide and bring one of the receivers in motion across the field. Often that 'receiver' was Berry who then runs straight up the middle (like a statue of liberty play somewhat). I have no idea what the thinking is here.

Berry's numbers are not bad given the team he played.

55 yards on 8 carries= 6.875 per carry

Consider two of Miami-Dade's other top backs who faced off against each other last night in Columbus' 20-18 win over Killian.

Columbus edges rival Killian to remain unbeaten - 11/15/2008 - MiamiHerald.com

Columbus' Jakari Gore (related to Frank Gore):

113 yards on 21 carries= 5.38 yards

Killian's Lamar Miller (Miami commit):

27 yards on 19 carries= 1.42 yards

I wanted to add another comment about Berry and his team's offensive attack. Another thing I noticed, particularly last year, is that they don't use a true fullback or blocking back when they do move out of their unorthodox attack.

I would like to contrast that with the above runners such as Miller (Gore often sits back there like Berry), who does play with a fullback or some other back in a slot position, I made a comment about Berry regarding this here, http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/...fl-rb-carlos-hyde-buckeye-19.html#post1328580

You probably won't hear much more on the situation until after Palmetto finishes its playoffs as that's where Berry's focus is right now, especially after just getting back into action last week. They have a game tomorrow night against a somewhat difficult Southwest team in the 1st round.

As far as Ole Miss, you might want to keep an eye on what this guy does, RB, Kendrick Hardy, Kendrick Hardy - Football Recruiting

Right now, I have heard zero down here about Berry and Ole Miss other than he is visiting. With regard to other players down here, I have heard a lot more talk about which way one person or another is going, but not in the case of Berry.

Why do you guys worry about things that you don't need to worry about .JB IS A BUCK

Yeah, like leroy said, that's just what we do. And, if I must say so myself, we're pretty freakin' good at it too. The best there is.

I have some friends down in that area, and they'll be at the game. Hopefully he can come out injury free.

Jaamal's team Palmetto won 20-14 tonight over Southwest. Jaamal had 1 TD on a short run around the left side and broke free on 57 yard gain only to be chased down by you guessed it (we have a thread open), Lamarcus Joyner. Jaamal probably had over a 100 yards and fought for a lot of them. Only thing I'll say is I wish they design more plays to run him outside, because when they did he had some very big gains. I think he ripped off a 30 yard gain on another run. But again, most of Jaamal's running was for some hard fought yards up the middle and sometimes he carried 2 or 3 guys for a few yards before he was brought down. You could definitely see his upper body strength at work twisting and turning.

Palmetto faces arch-rival Killian next Friday night in the 6A regional semifinals. Killian was a 21-14 (this score is schocking as Killian was a 3 TD favorite) over Miami Sunset high school (Sunset has been getting better over the years). How Killian only managed that much (they nearly lost) is beyond me, but Miami commit Lamar Miller had only 74 yards on 12 carries (about a 6.2 yard average). Palmetto lost 29-0 to Killian a few weeks back (Berry wasn't playing).

Should add that part of Berry's uniform by the top of his shoulder got ripped wide open in the 1st half. The Miami Herald usually has a highlight video that comes out a few days after the game. They usually just score the scoring plays (perhaps not that long run I was talking about), but we'll see.
