RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

Im sure somone will point me to post #____, but just curious if anyone knows if Jaamal is a threat out of the backfield as a receiver? I've watched some highlight films but haven't really seem him come out of the backfield as a receiver...last year we were talking about Saine being that threat to keep defenses honest...never really materialized...just curious if anyone in the know can comment on this facet of his game...

Take a look near the end and you'll see him catch the pass and go,
Video | MiamiHerald.com

I've seen it only done a few times, here's his stats, High School Sports - MiamiHerald.com

13 receptions for 122 yards and 1 TD in his 3 year varsity career.

They had a pretty good QB this year in Kevin Karpiak, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AchjF9xza40"]YouTube - Kevin Karpiak Highlight Tape (2009 Recruit)[/ame] but if there was a busted play, rather than throw a screen to Jaamal, this QB just took off running and Jaamal would be throwing a block. This QB made something out of busted plays all year.

Karpiak actually got 1st Team All-Dade County as a Kicker, http://media.miamiherald.com/smedia/2009/01/05/23/ad-bigfoot09.source.prod_affiliate.56.pdf

Sometimes, I'd see him line up with their unorthodox 5 receiver set that they sometimes ran, but he usually was the decoy and they'd double team him.

Great video , he is going to be a force with that blazing speed ( just need a little bulk so he can go between the tackles ) . WOW !! Can't wait to see him in s&g . Did i say WOW !!

I think Berry shouldn't bulk too much though because sometimes that added weight can end up hurting a player instead of helping him.

ESPN - Scouts Inc.: Matchups to watch during the practices that lead up to the UA All-America Game

Black ILB Petey Smith vs. Black RB Jaamal Berry

This should provide for a very interesting matchup both on and off the field all week. Berry and Smith are two of the higher-rated positional prospects out of the Sunshine State this year, but both are looking for national validation. Berry was labeled as the top back in the country by Scouts Inc. heading into the fall, but a senior season plagued by injuries caused his stock to drop. Smith's stock, on the other hand, has been on the rise since a disappointing junior season; he could challenge for a top-three national ILB ranking with a strong showing in Orlando. Berry's and Smith's updated rankings could be contingent on their head-to-head matchup on the field. We will be playing close attention to how the deceptively athletic Smith and the elusive Berry match up in space on screens and draw plays during the week of practice.

Scout.com: Under Armour Preview: Running Backs (free)

Jaamal Berry (5-11/185/Miami, Fla. -- Palmetto) was one of the most heavily recruited players in the entire state of Florida this year. He put his name on the recruiting map with a strong junior season but he really put his name on the national map with a strong spring combine tour, when he proved he could run with the best of them. His performances included a 4.31/40 time at the Scout.com Combine in Miami back in the spring. Berry's combination of size and speed is very impressive. He's not a bruiser between the tackles but he's also not a scat back by any stretch. Berry was injured for most of his senior season and never had a chance to really compete with four-star Lamar Miller for the Dade County rushing title this season that a lot of people were anticipating. This five-star prospect committed to Ohio State during the season over a host of others that didn't include the hometown Hurricanes, who never recruited him.

ESPN Grueling offseason workouts propel Berry -ESPN Rise FOOTBALL

Miami Palmetto running back Jaamal Berry owes his success to his competitiveness and grueling offseason workouts, writes Jon Mahoney.

They also mention his high school coach Larry Coffey. He is the son of a famous coach around these parts, Roger Coffey, who used to coach at powerhouse Miami Northwestern. Larry was also with Belle Glades Central for a few seasons, another Florida powerhouse.

The kids that play for him really look up to him. They are very fortunate to get such a fine coach. Palmetto has a history of having head coaches staying at the school for quite a long time, usually 10+ years and hand-in-hand with Jaamal Berry, they are locally known for producing high quality running backs for at least the past 30 years. Cecil Sapp, former RB with the Broncos and currently with the Texans, was a Palmetto grad. Just about ever year, it seems they get a 1000 yard back.

RB Jaamal Berry
5-10/185, Miami Palmetto

Whatever you want out of a tailback it looks like Berry can provide. He is quick to find the hole and even quicker running through it. He's got a great burst and acceleration and he has versatility as a pass-catcher. He has the skill set of an all-purpose back but a thick body structure. He can take a beating and will lower his head if he has to.

RB Jaamal Berry, 5-10/185, Miami (Fla.) Palmetto
ASSETS: Has very good quickness in the hole and ability to make people miss.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Berry looks a tad smaller than advertised. He needs to work on pass pro.
WHAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE IN PRACTICE: Berry had a short reception in the middle of the field in front of the linebackers and then turned up field with a great spin move to free himself.
CONCLUSION: Berry looks ultra-quick with the ball in his hands, has very good speed and is tough to handle one-on-one.
