Having waited two years to play at Ohio State, Erik Haw wasn’t willing to wait any longer.
Haw, a sophomore running back from Independence High School, has transferred to Jackson State, a Division I-AA school in Mississippi. That will allow him to avoid sitting out a season, as he would have had he transferred to another Division I-A school.
He will have three years of eligibility.
"I wanted an opportunity to play and showcase my skills, let everyone see what they’ve been missing," Haw said yesterday. "I want my family to know that hard work and persistence will pay off in the end."
A highly touted player out of high school, Haw redshirted in 2004 and played sparingly last season, appearing in four games and rushing 14 times for 61 yards and a touchdown.
After spring practice this year, he decided to transfer. He was disheartened at the prospect of another season fighting for playing time behind starter Antonio Pittman. The presence of sophomore Maurice Wells and incoming freshman Chris "Beanie" Wells could have relegated Haw to as low as fourth string.
"The way the reps were being distributed, I felt like I was going to be behind both those guys (Wells and Wells)," Haw said. "I had worked hard and I didn’t feel I was receiving a just opportunity that my work illustrated."
Haw said he met with coach Jim Tressel after spring ball ended and asked about his status.
"He didn’t tip his hand one way or the other, but he didn’t say what I wanted to hear, and that was that," Haw said.
He said he thought he is leaving the program on good terms. He plans to return to campus for Ohio State’s pro day down the road, as is his right as a Columbus native.
"I told coach Tressel I’d learned here and grown here," he said.
Haw said he also considered transferring to Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Arizona State, Cincinnati and Ohio University.
Jackson State was 2-9 last season.

I don't know if I would call it sour grapes, but I think he was probably referring to

Yep. I think I'd count that as sour grapes.

He claims he didn't get what he deserved - That's what I'd consider sour grapes.

I'll tell you what line I found to be significant, and amusing, in that article: "He didn't tip his hand one way or the other, but he didn't say what I wanted to hear, and that was that." Haw said. Guess that's why "he" is the head coach. It's not the head coach's job to please everyone. I wonder how many guys walked into Woody's office and didn't hear what they wanted to. Sometimes change for those involved is beneficial. Haw will get the chance to show his skills, and the Bucks will move forward with the talent on board. Best of luck to Haw.

I look at this way...

The kid is talented, a competitor, and has that edge of arrogance that all great athletes must have.

However, no matter what comes out of Erik's mouth concerning reps and PT, his heart knows the truth.

In December, he confirmed that he planned to graduate from tOSU...then, in the spring, he watched Chris Wells tote the rock.

Now, he is transferring.

Jim Tressel didn't have to say a word...Erik's eyes did all the talking that he needed to hear.

No worries, no hard feelings, nada...just best wishes for a kid looking for an opportunity.

Was just watching the RB drills clip over on www.coachtressel.com and noticed that Joe Gantz (#33) was working out in the four-deep (the clips must've been from a month or two ago, because Haw was in the four-deep but not Pittman). The four RBs in the drill were Haw, both Wells, and Gantz. Anyway, the point of this post is that Gantz looked pretty quick and agile. Granted, they were simple handoff and gate drills, but he still looked pretty decent and might get some carries in garbage time this season. He didn't look like much of a dropoff--if at all--from Haw, so we'll stay nice and deep at RB.

It was also the first chance to see sophomore running back Erik Haw, who transferred from Ohio State just two weeks ago.

"I'm just going to try and absorb everything as quickly as I can," Haw said. "It feels good to be at a place where I feel wanted and will be used to my full potential."

Was Haw the halfback caught selling weed?

I also seem to think that that incident took place at a time when the program was suffering one lump after another.

Getting out of the doghouse may have been next to impossible during those times.
