RB Erik Haw (official thread)

His ypc was pretty low for Highschool too if i remember correctly.

He rushed for like 3000+ yards as a senior but his ypc was ~6.5 i think. Pretty low for a back going to Big 10.

Elite high school backs are usually ~ 9 to 12.0 ypc.

Notebook: Tigers a numbers oddity

The Clarion-Ledger

Jackson State's football season has been a statistical anomaly so far. Consider these strange, yet true, numbers from the first four weeks of the season:

The Tigers are scoring 34.6 points per game which easily tops the SWAC. Yet the team is averaging just 283.7 total yards, which puts them eighth in the conference.

JSU has taken advantage of good field position at almost every opportunity, leading the conference by scoring 13 times in 14 red-zone opportunities including 12 touchdowns.

Despite averaging just over 50 rushing yards per game, JSU running back Erik Haw leads the SWAC with eight touchdowns.

"We've been pretty successful running the football and it's no secret that we'll do that when we're close to the goal line," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. "I've been pleased at how we've taken care of the football."

JSU is also the most penalized team in the SWAC, losing 117.7 yards per game. But opponents have been nearly as bad, losing 114 yards.

"Now that's not something I'm happy with," Comegy said. "Some of the stuff we're doing is just dumb. We have to correct that or it's going to bite us one week."

Jackson State has really struck gold with their Buckeye transfers!
I wonder if we'll see a steady or un-steady stream of Buckeyes heading there? :(

Well, I don't know how many more receiving targets they will be able to lure away considering in that 29-5 win their QB threw for 24 yards, with only four completions with two INT's. They are 3-1 so far, but the competition is suspect at best and because they play in the SWAC, they won't even be able to compete for a national title because the SWAC makes more money by holding a conference title game rather than sending their best teams to the playoffs.

They have about 20 or so D1 transfers on that team from this off-season alone. I can't even begin to comprehend what the allure is for that many guys to transfer there at the same time. (not trying to imply anything, I am simply at a loss)

Haw finds reason to enjoy season

Jackson State running back Erik Haw hasn't had a dream season by any stretch, but the sophomore said he's not upset with his first season in the SWAC.

A transfer from Ohio State, Haw has rushed for 352 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 3.0 yards per carry.

Lately, he's been hobbled by a sprained ankle and hasn't played much since an Oct. 7 victory over Alabama State.

Though still not 100 percent, Haw played sparingly against Prairie View A&M in last week's 31-7 win and said he'll play against Alcorn State in the Capital City Classic on Saturday.

"I'm not completely healthy, but it's football so you've got to play through it," Haw said. "This time of year, there's very few people that can say they're completely healthy."

Haw admitted a big finish would be nice for going into next season but said all that really matters is he helps JSU to a win.

"I know it hasn't been a great season for me and sure, I'd like to have a big last game," Haw said. "But I'm more excited about turning this program around and I think a 7-4 finish would look pretty good for next year."

Quarterback Jimmy Oliver is Jackson State's leading rusher with 495 yards.

Haw's stats for this season.

123 rushes; 371 yard; 9 TDs
3 rec; 81 yards; 1 TD
Looks like he didn't get much action after rushing 28 times for a net 75 yards in the 6th game of the season against Southern. 5, 0, 0, 6, 5 carries respectively for the next five games. Must have been injured.

Running back Erik Haw, who was a slight disappointment last season after transferring from Ohio State, said he's 100 percent and ready to improve upon his lackluster showing last season.

Haw struggled with ankle and foot injuries last season and averaged just 3 yards per carry. He did score a team-high nine TDs.

"It's time to bite down, get physical and prove that I'm better than I showed last season," Haw said.

JSU football: Haw relishes restart

Highly touted transfer struggled in '06

By David Brandt
[email protected]

About this time last year, running back Erik Haw was Jackson State's football savior - an Ohio State sophomore transfer whose speed, strength and ability would certainly allow him to trample on opponents from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

And in his first game with the Tigers, Haw lived up to every expectation, scoring four touchdowns and gaining 137 all-purpose yards in a 44-20 romp over Paul Quinn.

Life was good. But it didn't last very long.

As the season progressed, Haw (6-foot-1, 215 pounds) became less and less effective. The running room he enjoyed in that first game evaporated, followed quickly by the rushing yards and touchdowns. A sprained ankle suffered midway through the season certainly didn't help .

By the end of the year, he was an afterthought in the Tigers' offense, rushing for just 19 yards against Alcorn State in the Capital City Classic. For the season, he rushed for 371 yards and nine touchdowns on 123 carries - an average of barely 3 yards per carry.

Not exactly the type of performance a football savior's supposed to have.

"It was a tough season," Haw admitted. "I'm always confident and I've got high expectations for myself

JSU football: 'Seeing daylight' makes Haw think his time is near

By David Brandt

Jackson State running back Erik Haw, a former Ohio State Buckeye, runs for some of his 82 yards against Tennessee State on Saturday.

There were three times last Saturday night when Jackson State running back Erik Haw took the handoff, made his cut and then saw a glorious sight.

Lots of green grass and plenty of room to run on it.

Haw had three runs of 10 yards or more during JSU's 16-13 loss to Tennessee State on Saturday. The junior finished with 82 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Sure, there's nothing eye-popping about those numbers, but considering how much the once highly touted transfer from Ohio State has struggled over the past year, he won't take those solid gains for granted.

"It felt good for me," Haw said. "Anytime you can see some daylight and your offensive line is working for you - there's no better feeling. You always know that the next run could be the big one."
