COLUMBUS If Jim Tressel knows one thing, he knows the Buckeyes aren't going to slide up the college football polls in August. Ohio State, ranked No. 2 in the preseason Associated Press poll, had its last full-contact, no-holds barred scrimmage Saturday. For the record, the Buckeye offense beat the defense, 71-55, and retained the coveted scarlet practice jerseys.
And they did that without Beanie Wells. Tressel rested Wells from contact because he knows nothing ? outside of practice jerseys ? is won in August, and he already knows what the Heisman Trophy candidate brings to the OSU backfield.
Wells and wide receiver Brian Robiskie (shoulder) didn't play Saturday.
"Chris was probably a coach's decision ... the head coach's decisions," Tressel said. "I've seen Beanie. He's pretty good."
Robiskie's banged up shoulder could sideline him until this week. The Buckeyes open the season in less than two weeks against Youngstown State.
Without Wells, Boom Herron got a chance to show Tressel what he could do. Tressel indicated he liked what he saw in Herron, who could become OSU's No. 2 tailback.
