RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

Herron ready to reward Bengals? faith in him

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Tuesday, May 8, 2012

When Cincinnati selected Ohio State running back Dan ?Boom? Herron in the sixth round of the draft, it raised some eyebrows. Many fans were expecting the Bengals to draft a quicker, more explosive scatback-type runner to complement their feature back. Herron is a one-cut, downhill runner much like departed starter Cedric Benson.

But I think Herron could be a late-round steal based on his production in college. Although he was overlooked, he?s an ideal fit for the team?s run scheme.

The running back dropped in the draft because teams were more focused on his 40-time (4.6) at the combine and not enough on game speed or production. Then there was the six-game suspension for violation of NCAA rules, which may have scared some teams off.

Herron had to overcome some adversity his senior year due to the sports memorabilia scandal he was involved in that rocked Buckeye Nation and landed the program on probation.

?It was a lesson I definitely learned,? Herron told Big C on Tuesday. ?It was tough missing six games, but obviously I made a mistake at a young age and it came back to haunt me my last year. I actually learned so much from that situation. I feel like it has made me a better person and football player. Now before I make any decision I think twice. I think that situation will help me in life.?

What did you see out of Dan Herron today?

?Dan has some ability. You're talking about a running back, and they don?t get tackled (in a minicamp). He has to learn to get to the right spots in protections, and things like that that will come. I don?t know that you're going to get a lot of evaluation from me spouting off about (any) running back right now, because the running back's job is to make people miss, ultimately.?

PETE HEARS BOOM: Pete Johnson, the big back from the first Bengals Super Bowl team, took a break from working all week in his Columbus, Ohio backyard, and also checked in Saturday night before planning to golf Sunday. He predicts great things very quickly for his fellow Ohio State running back, rookie Daniel "Boom" Herron.

"I guarantee you he'll be starting by the first game," Johnson said. "He's a great player if they give him the chance. He can run the ball. He runs low. And he can catch the ball out of the backfield and we didn't do that enough at Ohio State. He's got a great sense of his surroundings and that's what a great running back needs."

Johnson, a second-round pick 35 years before the Bengals took Herron in the sixth round, knows what catching the ball can do for an offense. He was the third-leading receiver for the 1981 AFC champs with 46 catches and four receiving touchdowns.

Former OSU running back Daniel Herron

CINCINNATI ? Same name, different role.

Running back Daniel Herron played in 41 games in his four years at Ohio State and started every game in which he was eligible last year. Now Herron, who still goes by ?Boom? on the field, is just hoping to secure a roster spot for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Herron, a sixth-round draft pick, said he intends to prove he deserves one.

?I?ve just got to keep competing and show them I am capable of getting out there on the field and helping this team out and make some plays to win games,? Herron said.

Herron is hoping to land a spot as a rookie. Under Lewis, the Bengals traditionally have kept five running backs on their roster. In 2010, they kept four.

?Any opportunity that I can get, I definitely want to take advantage of it,? he said.

Selected in the sixth round of this year?s draft, Ohio State?s 10th-leading rusher all-time was slowed by an injuries in offseason workouts and earlier in training camp, but played Friday. Herron gained eight yards on four carries.

?He will get a good opportunity this week to play a little bit more and kind of see some things he does,? Lewis said. ?I think a running back needs opportunity and needs a chance to get a little bit of a feel for it and then go.

?He?s certainly going to have the physical-ness to play at this level. It?s just a matter of getting an opportunity and if we create some movement for him give him a chance to exhibit some of those skills.?

Cleveland Browns and NFL A.M. Links: Bengals' Daniel Herron looks to step up; spotlight on Brandon Weeden tonight; Mike Holmgren maintains Green Bay connections

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Daniel "Boom" Herron can't get outside Ohio when it comes to football. He played high school football in Warren, college football at Ohio State, and now he's trying to crack the NFL as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Continuing his dream in the Buckeye state is like a dream come true.

"I was thinking about that the other day," Herron said, following a training camp practice. "I've never lived anywhere else. But that's fine."

Herron, selected in the sixth round, could help his residency status with a solid performance in the Bengals' preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons tonight. Since the Bengals will play without top backs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Bernard Scott due to injuries, Herron and other reserve running backs will get an opportunity.

Herron has been slowed by injuries in offseason workouts and earlier in training camp. He did gain 8 yards on four carries in the preseason opener. Herron is expected to get more opportunities against Atlanta.

Keep in mind, one solid preseason effort will not mean Herron is a lock to make the roster. But it's a start, and running backs coach Jim Anderson likes several aspects of Herron's game.

"He's got a quick burst up the field, and he's got good hands in catching the football," Anderson said. "And he has a good history of playing football. He was a good player in high school, a good player in college and as he continues to put in the work, he'll be a good player here."
