BOOM?S DEBUT: Daniel ?Boom? Herron never rushed the punter at Ohio State, or in high school for that matter, so the Bengals have uncovered a talent the rookie running back didn?t know he possessed.
?I guess it?s one of those things they kind of just put me out there, and I was pretty good at it,? Herron said. ?I?m getting better at it, I?m working to get better at it. I?m having a lot of fun doing it, though.?
The sixth-round draft pick nearly blocked a punt in the Bengals? second preseason game and in his NFL regular season debut Sunday came off the edge and tipped a punt by the Cowboys? Brian Moorman. The punt still traveled 39 years despite Herron getting a hand on it.
?Obviously I didn?t get enough hand on it,? he said. ?So I have do to better next time.?
Herron had spent the entire season on the Bengals practice squad before the team signed him to the 53-man roster Dec. 4 after placing Mohamed Sanu on season-ending injured reserve and with it looking unlikely running back Cedric Peerman would play against the Cowboys because of an ankle injury.
?It means so much to me? Herron said of his NFL debut. ?It?s a dream come true. I?ve been working very hard for that moment. I?m just happy to be out there now.?
He logged 15 plays on special teams against the Cowboys. On Monday, Bengals coached Marvin Lewis noted the rookie?s effort.
?He was kind of the last one (of the draft class) not to have a chance to contribute this year,? Lewis said. ?All those guys have passed the same test getting this far, and now he got his real test in an NFL game and he was up to the challenge. He did the things that he?s shown (special teams coach Darrin Simmons) and I in practice for the last 16-17 weeks that we?ve been practicing. He?s shown us that in practice, and he went out there and did it.?
