RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

PEERMAN VS. HERRON VS. BURKHEAD
The Bengals figure to keep four running backs, so we're talking about the two spots behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard. It's a battle of a trio of sixth-rounders with Peerman by the Ravens in 2009 and Herron and Burkhead by the Bengals the past two seasons, respectively.

Herron, who flashed on special teams as a rookie last year when he partially blocked a punt and forced another one in his first two games, has had free run of the place. Peerman has missed the OTAs with what is believed to be a minor injury that won't keep him out of training camp and Burkhead has been slowed by a tweaked muscle that is thought not to be an issue when camp comes.

With a new two-year deal and a productive special teams r?sum?, Peerman looks to be the frontrunner. But Lewis says Herron has showed up this spring.

Herron was on the practice squad all last year until Peerman got hurt and played in three of the last four games, carrying just four times for five yards. Herron had no catches and Lewis doesn't remember him showing that skill set at this point last year.

"Danny has been able to show people things he can do," Lewis says. "He's impressed me with his ability to catch the football because you don't get much of that opportunity ? Danny being on the practice squad when he was there. He worked extremely hard, so when he got his chance, what he did and how productive he was on special teams was really no surprise."

Second-year back Dan "Boom" Herron was a standout in minicamp catching and running the ball. He showed good burst, change-of-direction, speed and quickness. Herron received a lot of reps and will likely challenge for the No. 2 position behind Green-Ellis.

?Dan is getting more comfortable in the offense and striving,? he said. ?He had success at Ohio State so I?m not surprised. He?s not chopped liver and a good football player. Dan is taking that next step in the process of his career and doing a good job. Overall, we have a good group and it?s going to be a very competitive training camp.?

One of those kids was Herron, an '07 graduate of Harding. Herron followed in Clarett's footsteps and enjoyed an illustrious career at the Ohio State University. The 24-year-old Herron was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft by Cincinnati. He blocked a punt and saw four carries as a rookie, and he said he's excited to compete for more playing time this year.

"OTA's and minicamp went really well," he said. "I'm in my second year, so everything is slowing down and is a little bit easier for me. I can just get out there and play instead of thinking about it. I'm very excited about this upcoming season."

Any fans of Herron can get an up-close look at the running back competition because the Bengals will be featured on HBO's Hard Knocks. The TV show gives an in-depth look at the rigors and harsh nature of what an NFL team's training camp is like.

"I'm pumped for it, ready to go," said Herron, who will compete with Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Bernard Scott, Cedric Peerman and 2013 second-round draft pick Giovani Bernard for playing time. "We've got a great group of guys. We're all going to compete, and it's going to be a lot fun. Watch it on Hard Knocks, and you'll see everything."

Cincinnati Bengals running back Daniel Herron 40-yard touchdown run - NFL.com video

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE: Boom Herron, vying for one of the final roster spots at running back, produced his best game with the Bengals.

The Ohio State product changed directions for a 40-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also broke off a 14-yard run where he appeared destined for more before an illegal-horse collar tackle slung him to the ground.

Herron finished with nine rushes for 81 yards (9.0 per rush) and the touchdown. Rex Burkhead contributed six rushes for 31 yards.

Marvin Lewis nearly always keeps four running backs and a fullback on his final roster. That leaves Herron competing with sixth-round pick Burkhead for the final spot behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Giovani Bernard and Cedric Peerman.

?We have to go out there and make plays, I just have to make an impact and show the coaches I am capable of making big plays,? Herron said.

Bengals: Daniel Herron adjusts to life after Ohio State

Daniel Herron, signing an autograph during training camp, is tied for first in the NFL with 111 rushing yards after two exhibition games.

CINCINNATI ? Two scarlet Ohio State baseball caps sit in the upper left corner of Daniel Herron?s locker within Paul Brown Stadium.

They mark how far the second-year Cincinnati Bengals running back has come and how far he still has to go.

Herron finds himself a world away from Columbus. He is no longer the Buckeyes? starter in the backfield, where he rushed for 2,869 yards over four seasons, 10th in school history. He is no longer carrying the ball 20 times a game. He is no longer part of a scandal for selling memorabilia in exchange for tattoos.

Instead, he finds himself fighting for a roster spot.

?I?m going to do my best with whatever job they present me with,? Herron, 24, said.

Burkhead, Herron in tight race for Bengals' roster spot

With two preseason games remaining, there isn?t any separation in the battle for the last running back spot between Dan Herron and Rex Burkhead. Neither one is making it easy.

Herron is tied for the team lead in carries (17) and has the highest yards-per-carry average among the running backs at 6.5. Burkhead is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, with two of his 15 carries being for 15-plus yards.

?They both have shown a lot of promise in every phase of the running back competition. That?s what makes it tough, and it?s going to be important they keep doing that in the last two games,? said offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

After being under the radar for much of training camp, Herron made his case with 81 yards on nine carries in last Saturday?s 27-19 win over Tennessee. That also included a 40-yard touchdown during the fourth quarter where he went right, got bottled up and then quickly reversed field.

Herron was among the final roster cuts during the preseason last year but was signed to the practice squad. He remained there until being added to the 53-man roster before Week 13 and played in three games. His greatest impact came on special teams, when he partially blocked a punt against Dallas and blocked a punt at Philadelphia.

Coach Marvin Lewis has been pleased with Herron?s progress throughout the offseason, and running backs coach Hue Jackson has been pleased with how physical Herron has been, not only running but in pass protection as well.

?My thing was trying to get better overall ? blocking, catching the ball out of the backfield,? Herron said. ?Any time you have a pretty good game it is encouraging, but you have to understand you can?t read too much into it. I have to keep working.?

Star report

After losing running backs Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard to season-ending injuries, the Indianapolis Colts are in need of depth at the position.

On Wednesday, the team signed running back Daniel “Boom” Herron from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad as well as free agent linebacker Andy Studebaker to the 53-man active roster.

The Colts had two open roster spots after placing Bradshaw on injured reserve and waiving running back Robert Hughes on Tuesday.

Herron, 5-10, 212 pounds, has appeared in three career games with the Bengals after being selected by the team in the sixth round (191st overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Prior to the NFL, Herron played four seasons (2008-2011) at Ohio State University where he totaled 592 rushing attempts for 2,869 yards and 32 touchdowns as well as 44 receptions for 309 yards and a touchdown.
